Experiment 6
Sinusoidal and Non-sinusoidal Oscillators
Objective:
To study the performance of sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal
oscillators.

Components required: Op-amp 741, resistors, and diodes. The op-

amp dc power supply voltages are 15 V.

Experiment:

1. Wien bridge oscillator:

1.1 Design Wien bridge oscillator as shown in Figure 1 for a
frequency of 16 kHz. Assume R=1 kΩ, R1=1kΩ. Assemble the circuit.
Let R2 be the series combination of 1kΩ fixed resistor and a
potentiometer of 10 kΩ. Measure the frequency and amplitude of
the output waveform.

foutput =10kHz when potentiometer at 500 ohm

(manually counted for 1 milli secs)

Vpeak to peak output = 1.2744V

1.2 Double the value of C and repeat the measurements.

foutput =4.5 kHz when potentiometer at 1000 ohm

(manually counted for 1 milli secs)

Vpeak to peak output = 17.7823 V

1
1.3 Now assemble the circuit as shown in Figure 2 with R2= 1 k
and R1= 10 k potentiometer. Connect diodes 1N914 or LEDs across
R2. Measure the frequency and amplitude of the output waveform.

foutput
= 14.797kHz

Vpeak to peak output

= 1.0659 V

1.4 Compare the measured values with the designed values.

2. RC phase-shift oscillator:
2.1 Design a RC phase shift oscillator as shown in Figure 3
for a frequency of 6.5 kHz. Assume R=1 kΩ and Rf= 100
k potentiometer. Assemble the circuit.

2.2 Measure the frequency and

amplitude of the output
waveform.

foutput = 4.8762 kHz

Vpeak to peak output = 27.85V
2.3 Double the value of C and repeat the measurements.

foutput = 2.7943 kHz

Vpeak to peak output = 27.823 V

3. Astable Multivibrator (Square Wave generator):

2
3.1 Design an astable multivibrator as shown in Figure 4 for
a frequency of 500 Hz. Let R2 =1.1 R1 and R = 10 k. Assemble
the circuit.

3.2 Measure the frequency and amplitude of the output waveform.

foutput =526.025 Hz

Vpeak to peak output = 27.442V

3.3 Double the value of and repeat the measurements.

foutput = 254.5791 Hz
