Experiment -4
Precision Circuits
Objective:
To study
1. Fast precision half-wave rectifier
2. Precision full-wave rectifier

Components required:

Experiment:
1. Fast precision half-wave rectifier:
1.1 Design a fast precision half-wave rectifier as shown schematically in Figure
1, for a gain of -3.9. Choose the appropriate resistor values of R 1 and R2.
Consider RL = 10kΩ and R3 = R1 || R2. Use 1N4002 diodes. Assemble the
circuit.

Draw the circuit of Fig12.3 of TB2 Page No. 93

1.2 Feed sinusoidal input of amplitude 200mV and frequency 100 Hz. Observe
the input and output voltages on a CRO. Determine the amplitude and
frequency of the output voltage. Plot the input and output voltages on the
same scale. Increase the frequency of the input signal till distortion appears in
the output. Record this frequency.

fcutoff,H =…………….. Input signal frequency at which distortion appears

1.3 Repeat step 1.2 by reversing the polarity of the diodes.

fcutoff,H =…………….. Input signal frequency at which distortion appears

2. Precision full-wave rectifier:

2.1 Design a precision full-wave rectifier as shown schematically in Figure 2 for

a gain of +3.9. Choose the appropriate resistor values of R 4 and R6.
Consider R1 = 1kΩ, R5 = R4 and R3 = R1 || R2 for A1 and R4 || R5 || R6 for
A2. Use 1N4002 diodes. Assemble the circuit.

Draw the circuit of Fig12.4 of TB2 Page No. 94

2.2 Feed Sinusoidal input of amplitude 1 V and frequency 100 Hz. Observe the
input and output voltages on a CRO. Plot the input and output voltages on the
same scale. Determine the amplitude and frequency of the output voltage.

Vpeak to peak] output =………………..

foutput = ……………..

2.3 Increase the frequency of the input signal till distortion appears in the output.
Record this frequency.

fcutoff,H =…………….. Input signal frequency at which distortion appears

3. PSPICE Simulations:

Use the macromodels of the μA741, 1N4002 and 1N750 from the analog
devices library in simulation. The op-amp dc power supply voltages are +15/-15
V.
3.1 Simulate the circuit, as used in experiment (Positive clamping circuit) step 4,
using PSPICE. Plot the input and the output on the same scale. Compare the
results with the experimental results.

3.2 Simulate the circuit, as used in experiment (Peak detector) step 5, using
PSPICE. Plot the input and the output on the same scale. Compare the
results with the experimental results.
