Question 1 [ Theoretical questions from Text Book]

1.1. What are the two types of losses that are associated with time- varying fluxes – explain
them
1.2. What can be used to reduce the effect of eddy currents- and explain
1.3. How are eddy currents in the core formed?
1.4. Draw a hysteresis curve and explain the various stages of magnetisation for a
ferromagnetic material
1.5. Describe what components of a simplified magnetic circuit and also provide a drawing
of a simple magnetic circuit
1.6. There is often an analogy that describes the difference between magnetic circuits and
electric circuits. Describe this and provide the relevant circuits and equations
1.7. Define permeance
1.8. Derive the mutual inductance and self inductance of each coil of a magnetic circuit with
2 windings and an airgap as shown in Figure 1.8 page 16.

Question 2:

A core of cast steel shown in Figure 1 has a cross sectional area of 10 cm 2 and an average length
of 350 mm. A coil consisting of 200 turns is wound around the core and carries a current of 3 A.

The length of the air gap is 1 mm. Assuming that the reluctance of the core is negligible compared
to the air gap, determine the magnetic flux in the air gap.

Lc = 350 mm
Ac = 10 cm2

200 turns
3A 1 mm
