TUTORIAL # 3 – HEAT

1. Microprocessor chips have a “heat sink” glued on top that looks like a series of fins. Why is it
shaped like that ?

2. An automobile cooling system holds 16 L of water. How much heat does it absorb if its
temperature rises from 20oC to 90oC ? [ specific heat capacity of water = 4186 J/kgK and density
of water = 1000 kg/m3]

3. What will be the equilibrium temperature when a 245 g block of copper at 285oC is placed in a
145 g aluminium calorimeter cup containing 825 g of water at 12.0oC ? [ specific heat capacity of
copper = 390 J/kgK and specific heat capacity of aluminium = 900 J/kgK]

4. One end of a 33 cm long aluminium rod with a diameter of 2.0 cm is kept at 460oC and the other
is immersed in water at 22oC. Calculate the heat conduction rate along the rod.

5. How much power is radiated by a tungsten sphere (emissivity e =0.35) of radius 22 cm at a

temperature of 25oC ?

6. If the tungsten sphere in question 5 is enclosed in a room whose walls are kept at -5oC, what is the
net flow rate of energy out of the sphere ?

7. A copper rod and an aluminium rod of the same length and cross-sectional area are attached end
to end. The copper end is placed in a furnace maintained at a constant temperature of 250oC. The
aluminium end is placed in an ice bath held at constant temperature of 0.0oC. Calculate the
temperature at which the two rods are joined. [ Thermal conductivity of copper = 380 W/mK and
Thermal conductivity of aluminium = 200 W/mK]

8. Two rooms each a cube of 4 m per side share a 12 cm thick brick wall. Because of a number of
100 W lightbulbs in one room, the air is at 30oC, while in the other room it is at 10oC. How many
of the 100 W bulbs are needed to maintain the temperature difference across the wall ? [Thermal
conductivity of brick = 0.84 W/mK]

9. A 100 W lightbulb generates 95W of heat which is dissipated through a glass bulb that has a
radius of 3.0 cm and is 1.0 mm thick. What is the difference in temperature between the inner and
outer surfaces of the glass ? [Thermal conductivity of glass = 0.84 W/mK]
