 SIMPLE PAST TENSE

Time expression is used to signal the past tense

yesterday last week last fortnight last night

last year last month last Monday last weekend
Ago just now one day this morning

Subject Verb Object Time

She saw an elephant at the zoo just now
He chose that clever boy as the monitor a few minutes ago
It gave birth to four kittens last month
You stayed in that big bungalow last Sunday
They came to my house last year
We taught English Language yesterday
I ate pizza this morning
put the bags in the classroom last night

There are 2 types of verbs in the simple past tense; the regular verbs and
the irregular verbs.

REGULAR VERBS
‘ed’ jump - jumped walk - walked pray - prayed
melt - melted brew - brewed plan - planned
‘d' bake - baked receive - received bathe - bathed

hope - hoped decide - decided like - liked

‘ied' cry - cried carry - carried marry - married
IRREGULAR VERBS
Verbs that run-ran come - came drive – drove
change
form begin - began sleep - slept swim – swam
sing - sang catch - caught sell – sold
Verbs that do hit - hit cut - cut put – put
not change
shut - shut let - let beat – beat

Exercise 1
Fill in the blanks with the simple past tense.
1. We ____________ (shake) hands with the Prime Minister at the end of the
event yesterday.
2. Last night, Samantha (wish) her mother a happy
birthday.

3. Mr. Ratnam (withdraw) some money from the ATM

this morning.
4. The sailors (cast) the anchor to prevent the ship from
moving away when they arrived at the port.
5. That company (supply) most of the sugar in our
country last year.

Exercise 2
Fill in the blanks with the simple past tense.

1. The athlete (hold) the baton in his hand and ran very fast.

2. The king (ride) on his horse and inspected the guards.

3. The mountain climber (hurt) himself when he

climbed up a steep rock.
