Aim
The objective of this project is to design and make a liquid lens
microscope and for investigation of the capabilities of this instrument
for various microscopy applications.

Theory
Liquid lens microscopy is an innovative approach which uses a droplet
of liquid as a variable-focus lens for capturing images of microscopic
specimens. This technology is because of the principle of
electrowetting, which allows the curvature of a liquid-air interface to
be controlled by application of an electric field. In this project, we will
create a simple liquid lens microscope setup to study its potential
advantages and applications.

The main components of the liquid lens microscope setup include:

1. Liquid Lens: A droplet of conductive liquid (usually water and oil)

is placed on a hydrophobic surface. This droplet serves as the
adjustable lens.

on either side
Electrodes:Two electrodes are placed the liquid

lens. When voltage is applied across these electrodes, the shape and
a

curvature of the liquid lens get changed, resulting in a change in the

focal length.

3. Microscope Objective: standard microscope objective

A is used
for capturing magnified image of the specimen.
4. Microscope Eyepiece and Camera: Depending on the setup, a
microscope eyepiece can be used for visual observation or a camera
for recording and analysing the images.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

1. Box (BASE)
2. Syringes (HOLDER)
3. Hard Plastic
4. 4mmn tube
5. Flash Light
6. Glycerine (Liquid lens)
7. Slides
8. Onion Epidermis
9. Methyl Blue

10. Mobile Display (Red Pixels)

Procedure

2. A small droplet of conductive liquid (water-oil mixture) is to be

placed on the hydrophobic surface.

3. Two electrodes on either side of the liquid droplet are to be placed.

4. The electrodes are to be connected with a variable power supply

for controlling the applied voltage.

camera.
Observation
1. The liquid lens microscope allows the advantage of rapid auto
focusing, avoiding the need for mechanical adjustments.

2. This technology allows for real-time adjustment, making the same

3. The liquid lens microscope provides for easy and rapid adjustments
of the focal length with variations of the voltage applied to the
electrodes.

4. The quality of the images obtained with the liquid lens microscope
is comparable to traditional microscope systems.

Application
a
The liquid lens microscope has various applications, few of which
are:

can be observed in
1.Biological Research: Live biological samples
real-time with adjustable focus.

It provides an interactive and easy-to-use tool for

2. Education:
teaching microscopy in schools and laboratories.
3. Medical Diagnostics: Liquid lens microscope can be used in
rapid cell imaging and diagnosing diseases at the microscopic level.

4. Material Science: This instrument helps in characterizing the

microstructure of materials and analysing their properties.

Conclusion
The liquid lens microscope presents an innovative approach to
microscopy with its adjustable liquid lens, allowing for rapid and
precise focusing. This technology has the potential to find applications
in various fields, such as materials science, medicine, biological
use, and
research, and education. The real-time adjustability, ease of

quality of images obtained make it
may lead to
microscopy toolkit. Further research and development
improved and more widespread use of liquid lens microscopes in the
future.
