Important Safety Information

Illustration 1 g02139237

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to
observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous
situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have
the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly. Safety precautions and warnings are
provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death
could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might
involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product
are not all inclusive. If a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by
Caterpillar is used, ensure that it is safe for you and for other people to use. Ensure that the product will not be
damaged or the product will not be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair
procedures that are used.

Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance or repair of this product

can be dangerous and could result in injury or death.

Do not operate or perform any lubrication, maintenance or repair on

this product, until you have read and understood the operation,
lubrication, maintenance and repair information.

The hazards are identified by the safety alert symbol which is followed by a signal word such as danger,
warning, or caution. The “WARNING” safety alert symbol is shown below.

Illustration 2 g00008666

This safety alert symbol means:

Pay attention!

Become alert!

Your safety is involved.

The message that appears under the safety alert symbol explains the hazard.

Operations that may cause product damage are identified by "NOTICE" labels on the product and in this
publication.

Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The
safety information in this document and the safety information on the machine are not all inclusive.
Determine that the tools, procedures, work methods, and operating techniques are safe. Determine that
the operation, lubrication, maintenance, and repair procedures will not damage the machine. Also,
determine that the operation, lubrication, maintenance, and repair procedures will not make the machine
unsafe.

The information, the specifications, and the illustrations that exist in this guideline are based on information
which was available at the time of publication. The specifications, torques, pressures, measurements,
adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. These changes can affect the service that is
given to the product. Obtain the complete, most current information before you start any job. Caterpillar dealers
can supply the most current information.

Summary
This guideline describes the procedures to remove large wheel bearings. Two tool groups are available for the
procedures. 301-5718 Bearing Removal Gp is designed to service the 769 through the 775 and the front wheels
for the 777. 301-5725 Bearing Removal Gp is designed to service the rear wheels for the 777 and the 785
through the 797.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool

Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Failure to properly assemble parts or failure to follow established

procedures can lead to damage of the parts and assembly.

To avoid damage to parts, always identify and mark the parts so that
they can be installed in the same location. Never force parts during
assembly.

NOTICE

Failure to follow the recommended procedure or the specified tooling

that is required for the procedure could result in damage to
components.

To avoid component damage, follow the recommended procedure

using the recommended tools.

Do not operate or work on this machine unless you have read and
understand the instructions and warnings in the Operation and
Maintenance Manuals. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the
warnings could result in injury or death. Contact any Caterpillar dealer
for replacement manuals. Proper care is your responsibility.

For machines equipped with quick coupler, improper attachment of

work tools could result in injury or death.

Do not operate this machine until you have positive indication that the
coupler pins are fully engaged. Follow recommended procedure in
Operation and Maintenance Manual.

Securely fasten radio (if equipped) and all loose items such as lunch
boxes or tools. Failure to do so could allow items to shift position during
rough machine operation or tip over and result in injury. Refer to the
Operation and Maintenance Manual for specific fastening and latching
requirements.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be
cleaned thoroughly. This procedure will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

1. Disassemble the final drives. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly manual for the machine being serviced.

2. Determine correct Tooling (A), the hub assembly, and the slide bar that will be used to pull the bearings.
Refer to Table 3 or Table 4 for the correct hub assembly and slide bar.

Note: The inboard bearings and the outboard bearings for the same wheel may require a different tooling
setup.

(AA) Distance between the inner diameter of the bearing and the inner diameter of the wheel on the back face of the bearing

3. Measure distance (AA) between the inner diameter of the bearing and the inner diameter of the wheel on
the back face of the bearing.

Note: The minimum distance that is required is the length of the notch on the slide bar plus 0.5 mm
(0.02 inch).

◦ The required distance for the 301-5720 Hub As is 5.5 mm (0.22 inch).

◦ The required distance for the 301-5722 Hub As is 7.5 mm (0.30 inch).

◦ The required distance for the 301-5727 Hub As and the 301-5730 Hub As is 10.5 mm (0.41 inch).

If the distance is less than the required distance, this tool will not remove the bearing. The inner diameter
of the wheel will need to be machined to the required dimension. Refer to the "Altering the Wheel"
section of this guideline.

Altering the Wheel

The wheel may need to be altered due to large tolerances in the casting. Machine the wheel to remove only
enough material for clearance for the tooling. Refer to Table 5 or Table 6 for the wheels that may need to be
