ChE 4241: INTEGRATION COURSE FOR ChE

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

Show all necessary solution. Work on 4-decimal places for the whole solution.

1. Liquid n-hexane flows at a rate of m = 0.75 kg/s in a pipe with inside diameter of 5cm. What is the
volumetric flowrate, molar flowrate and the velocity of the liquid? Use density of the liquid to be 660
kg/m3.

2. Calculate the pressure of a 500g of gaseous ammonia that is contained in a 30,000-cc vessel
immersed in a constant-temperature bath at 65oC by
(a) Ideal Gas Equation
(b) Generalized Correlation

3. Steam generated in a power plant at a pressure of 8,600 kPa and a temperature of 500oC is fed to a
turbine. Exhaust from the turbine enters a condenser at 10 kPa, where it is condensed to saturated
liquid, which is then pumped to the boiler.
(a) What is the thermal efficiency of a Rankine Cycle operating at these conditions?
(b) What is the thermal efficiency of a practical cycle operating at these conditions if the
turbine efficiency and pump efficiency are both 0.75?
(c) If the rating of the power cycle of part (b) is 80,000 kW, what is the steam rate and what
are the heat-transfer rates in the boiler and condenser?

4. The temperature of water flowing inside a rectangular steel duct, measuring 0.6m wide x 0.3m high
x 10.0m long, is 50oF. The water is flowing at a rate of 349.1 L/s. The kinematic viscosity of the flowing
fluid is 0.000001307 m2/s.
(a) what is the hydraulic diameter of the pipe?
(b) Calculate the Reynold’s number.
(c) If the friction factor taken from the Moody Chart is 0.014, calculate the frictional head in m.

5. A pump takes vinegar from the bottom of a supply tank and discharges it into the atmosphere at a
level 3,000 ft above the bottom of the supply tank. The pipe before the pump is a 6-in schedule 120
pipe, 6400ft long and the pipe after the pump is a 4-in schedule 40 pipe, 3600 ft long. The flowrate is
retained at 300 gpm along the stretch of the pipeline. In the line are 3 fully opened gate valves, 7
standard tees, and 6pcs. 90 deg standard ells. What is the energy cost for running this pump for one
24-hour day? The specific gravity of vinegar is 1.18. Assuming operation is 300 days per year. The overall
efficiency of the pump and motor is 60% and the viscosity of the vinegar is 1.12 cP.
