Answer all questions in this section
1. What happens to the compound in the following experiments? give equations, names and molecular
structures of the product formed when
i. Ethanol is heated with concentrated sulphuric acid to a temperature of about 180℃
ii. Ethene is heated with bromine under dark condition
iii. Ethanol and vinegar are warmed together in the presence of concentrated sulphuric
acid
iv. Methane reacts with bromine in bright sunlight

2. a) Natural gas consists mainly of one hydrocarbon. name this hydrocarbon and give the general
formula for the homologous series to which it belongs.
b) Write balanced chemical equation to show five possible products obtained when this hydrocarbon
reacts with chlorine in bright sunlight. name the product obtained
c) Write a chemical equation to show the burning of this hydrocarbon from natural gas.

iv. 4-Ethylloctane

4. What are molecular structural isomers that correspond to the molecular formula C6H12.

5. One of the important applications of fractional distillation is to separate components depending on


their difference in their boiling points, explain how can you separate the component of crude oil
from fractional distillation method.
