d. Value Statement
Humility is nothing but truth, and pride is nothing but lying.” -Saint Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent often said that simplicity was his favorite virtue. Simplicity is expressing
ourselves honestly, with frankness, integrity, and genuineness. It is, as St. Vincent put it,
“saying things simply, without duplicity or subtlety, being straightforward, with no
evasion or subterfuge.”
What does it mean to be honest and straightforward when you talk to your friends or
family? Can you give an example?
How do you feel when things are made more complicated than they need to be? Why is it
good to keep things simple and clear?
Have you seen someone help another person without expecting anything back? How is
this related to being humble, like Saint Vincent de Paul talked about?
c. Deepening
Saint Vincent de Paul believed that being humble means being truthful about who you are
and understanding that you need help from God. He said, "Humility is nothing but truth,
and pride is nothing but lying." He also thought that being simple is important. Not just
avoiding complicated things but being honest and straightforward in how you talk and
act. According to him, humility (being truthful about yourself and relying on God) and
simplicity (being honest and straightforward) go together. So, being a good and honest
person, according to Saint Vincent de Paul, means being humble like telling the truth
about yourself and simple like being straightforward and honest in everything you do.
d. Response
Creative skit creation and performance, allowing students to actively express their
understanding of honesty and truthfulness.
