Routes and Air Services

Airlines use network planning model to predict their profitability. It was further explained that network
planning models are used by airlines to find out how many passengers can be expected to fly to which
destinations, what city they should operate and other schedule-related decisions.

2 main categories of a network model

1. Point-to-point network - it is when an airline operates simple routes. Airline focus on operating flights between
the origin city to the destination.
- it is typically non-stop flight.
- Airline who operates point-to-point service limit their responsibility of bringing passenger to the arrival
city of the flight.

2. Hub and Spoke - the bicycle wheel is an example of an spoke where the center of the wheel is the hub.
- airline use the larger and busier airports as their hub. The smaller or regional cities feed their passengers
to the hub.
- spokes are also known as feeder flights.

Regulatory bodies
Global Industry Association and Organizations
1. International Air Transport Association (IATA)
- is a very important organization in air transportation as well as in the tourism industry. IATA is a
group organized by 57 international airlines in 1945
- established with the mission to represent, lead and serve the airline industry

- IATA standardization is seen not only in the IATA codes, one of the manifestations of this
standardization and efficiency is code. The IATA three-letter city and airport code are still in used today.
- aside from airport codes, IATA also has airline codes. For airlines, there are two kinds of code.
There is the numeric code that is used for airline accountable forms, such as airline ticket and airway bills.
Another code is the two-character code assigned to each international airline.
