As we begin a fresh chapter, 2024 offers
a moment to reflect on the profound
impact of travel in the past year and brace ourselves for the
year ahead.

Tourism is on a steady rise once more, with a good number

of tourists both visiting for the first time and returning to
Sarawak for their holidays and escapades in many of our
places of interest. As of November 2023, tourist arrivals in
Sarawak totalled 3,446,380 visitors. Out of that number,
1,851,256 were from foreign countries, while 1,595,124
visitors were from Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. This is
something I am particularly pleased with, and it is all thanks
to the collective endeavours of not only those within my
Ministry but also all stakeholders within the tourism sector.

The beginning of the year gives us a chance to recognise the

transformative nature of exploring new horizons. One may
find this time of the year an ideal time to go on a “healing”
journey. I am happy to say that Sarawak offers many healing hotspots. Whether it is

Finally, with Chinese New Year set to fall in early February, let’s look at the CNY

community here during the auspicious celebration. I too would like to wish everyone
who celebrates, a very Happy Chinese New Year.

These are among many interesting subjects highlighted in this edition of BorneoTalk,
and I invite you to have a read of these articles. Perhaps you will find your inspiration

Sustainable Traveller

Here’s how you

can become A

In
sustainable
traveller the 21st century, an era defined
by technological advancements
and global connectivity, travel has
become an integral part of our lives. When our
footprints are felt on every corner of the globe,
what does it truly mean to be a sustainable
tourist? How can our travels become a force
for good, both for the environment and the
communities we encounter?

Sustainable travel involves making choices

that minimise the negative impact of tourism
on the places we visit. It’s a conscious effort
to ensure that our desire to travel doesn’t
contribute to the ruin of the very destinations
we cherish. So, when we speak of sustainable
travel, we are talking about a holistic approach
that considers the ecological, social, and
economic aspects of our journeys.

Why should we care about sustainable travel?

The answer lies in the undeniable fact that our
planet is facing unprecedented environmental
challenges. By adopting sustainable travel
practices, we not only reduce our ecological
footprint but also contribute to the
preservation of biodiversity and the well-being
of local communities.

Here are some steps you can

take to inject more sustainability
into your travels:
Carrying reusable bags and water bottles is a Use
powerful yet simple act that significantly reduces
recyclable
the environmental impact of your travels. By opting
bags and
water
for reusable alternatives, you can contribute to the
reduction of single-use plastics, curbing pollution
and lowering the demand for disposable items. This bottles
choice not only minimises carbon emissions associated with plastic
production but also fosters a culture of sustainability.

Sustainable Traveller

Be a conscious traveller and avoid littering just anywhere. Make sure

Dispose
of waste
you properly dispose of your wastes to preserve the original condition
of the places you visit. Besides preserving the beauty and cleanliness of
these places, this act also protects local flora and fauna, contributing responsibly
to the health of these ecosystems. In simple terms, it helps keep the environment
clean and safe for animals and plants. When we all do our part, it adds up to create a
positive and lasting effect on the places we explore and the people who live there.

Support Another way to become a sustainable traveller is by choosing

local handmade souvenirs from local artisans. Sarawak is home to

handicrafts
many skilled craftspeople whose livelihood will be positively
impacted with your support by purchasing their handicrafts
either straight from them or through the shops where they display their
products. By investing in locally crafted items, travellers help sustain cultural
traditions and ensure a fairer distribution of wealth, fostering a positive impact
on both the places you visit here in Sarawak and its people.

No matter if you choose to stay in a five-star hotel or a simple Airbnb,

Conserve water
being mindful of water usage in these accommodations helps contribute
in accommo-
dations
to water conservation. This can be just a simple act of avoiding
bathroom water from overflowing or reusing towels instead of having
them replaced every day. By practicing such acts, you are doing your part in reducing
environmental impact from your stay at these accommodations. These practices not
only are align with sustainable travel principles but also support the broader goal of
responsible tourism and the preservation of precious water resources.

Take eco- Choosing eco-friendly transportation, such as Kuching’s eco-friendly

transportation
and around the city, biking, or simply walking, is a conscious step
to minimise carbon footprint during travel. Kuching’s upcoming
hydrogen-powered Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, which is currently in
its testing phase, will provide a convenient, eco-friendly means of transportation,
carrying passengers to and fro on dedicated tracks, bypassing traffic and running on
clean energy. These options reduce individual emissions, alleviate traffic congestion,
and contribute to sustainable urban development. By embracing eco-friendly modes
of transportation, you actively participate in a global movement toward greener and
more sustainable travel practices.

you can do your part in supporting local communities by areas

enhances the cultural and environmental education for visitors.

Respect local Before you travel, learn about the local customs and rules, especially

communities
in places where the community is made up of a diverse ethnic
makeup like here in Sarawak. Each place has its own way of doing
things, and it’s important to dress appropriately and avoid gestures that might
be offensive. Follow the local laws, like rules about taking pictures or behaving
in public. Being mindful of these things helps create a positive impression and
contributes to the well-being of the place you’re visiting. This way, your travel can
be enjoyable and respectful to everyone and everything around you.

Sustainable travel is a commitment to leave a positive impact on the places we visit, and it is a much-welcomed practice
here in Sarawak, a region with active and ongoing efforts towards a sustainable future and a greener tomorrow. By
adopting these simple yet effective practices, you too can contribute to the preservation of not just Sarawak’s natural
beauty and well-being, but also that of the world. The next time you prepare to travel, ask yourself: “How can I make
this experience not just memorable for me but sustainable for the world?”

town was actually situated in a
different area, but a massive flood in
1883 ripped open the nearby dam
and destroyed everything in its path,
causing the death of not just the
villagers but also its District Officer
at the time, Sir Cecil Ranking. The
locals believed that the 1883 tragedy
happened because Sir Cecil Ranking
killed a river guardian, a white

Sarawak is a waterfall
Waterfalls paradise, offering both
easily accessible ones and
those located deep in the
jungle. The Western Julan Waterfall in Usun Apau

France, is a challenging trek and is best admired from
a distance rather than up-close.

An easier option would be Tekiwit Waterfall in Long

Selaan, Ulu Baram Miri, the third-highest waterfall in
Sarawak at over 100 metres. A lesser-known beauty
is Wong Pejik Lusong Laku in Belaga, dubbed the
‘Niagara Falls of Sarawak’ for its resemblance. It has a
width of over 50 metres, with the water dropping 20
feet into the river below. Its beauty and grandeur can
be admired from the edges of the fall or from a boat,
just like, you’ve guessed it - Niagara Falls.

Other popular waterfalls in Sarawak include Giam

Speaking of waterfalls,
the Susung Waterfall in

gorgeous, especially due
to its location in the mountains, resembling an
ancient jungle from the dinosaur age. The mist
from the falls, the huge boulders forming a barrier

overall prehistoric feel of the area have earned it the
nickname ‘Jurassic World’ of Sarawak.

Getting there involves a 30-minute boat ride from

about an hour’s hike up to Susung Waterfall. Along
the way, you’ll cross the Pateng suspension bridge
that hangs 10 metres above the river, and then walk

Bau

FAREWELL TO
THE KING
“Farewell to the King” is a 1989 American action-adventure drama film directed
by John Milius, starring Nick Nolte, Nigel Havers, Frank McRae, and Gerry Lopez.
The story revolves around Learoyd, an American deserter during World War II who
escapes a Japanese firing squad and finds refuge with the Iban tribe in the wilds
of Borneo. Due to his distinctive blue eyes, the locals believe he is divine, and
made Learoyd their king. When British soldiers ask him to join the fight against the
Japanese, he initially refuses. However, when his tribe is threatened, he decides to
defend their rights and independence.

The film was shot on location in Bau, Sarawak in August 1987. Nick Nolte noted
that although they could have filmed in the Philippines at a lower cost, the authenticity of Borneo, its
people, and the legacy of Rajah Brooke, drew them to the location. Director John Milius acknowledged
the toughness of filming in Borneo but appreciated the unique challenges and rugged beauty the location
offered.

WORTHY MENTION:
MARVEL’S VENOM
This 2018 Marvel superhero film stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, who gains superpowers
after merging with an alien symbiote known as Venom. The movie begins with a space
rocket belonging to the LIFE Foundation crashing in the fictional Borneo Conservation
Forest, located 20 kilometres to the west of Sibu. At the crash site, one of the E.M.T
personnel exclaims, “Eh! Yang ni masih hidup lagi (Hey! this one’s still alive),” in an accent
that clearly isn’t Malaysian. Other scenes in the film include a night market in a village in
Sibu and an older setting of Sibu Airport before its renovation.

While these scenes were not actually shot in Sibu,

they did generate excitement among Malaysians
when the movie came out.

That said, Sibu is one of the four major cities and

towns to visit in Sarawak. Visit Sibu for its iconic
Foochow cuisine, including food like kompia,
kampua noodles, Foochow noodles, ding bian
hu, and mee sua. The Sibu Central Market is an
absolute must-visit, and the traditional mee sua
makers are not to be left out in your itinerary. Also
check out the Bawang Assan Iban Longhouses, a
set of nine longhouses that were originally built in
the 19th century.

Of course, there are other productions, both

film and TV, that we have not mentioned here.

looking to relive the magic on-screen or a traveller
seeking to experience these places firsthand,
Sarawak promises a delightful journey, beyond the
