TASK 3 - Merger and separation
In this gallery, we will be looking at Singapore's merger and separation

The merger with Malaya was important for Singapore's economic survival
and for Singapore to be granted independence. A referendum (vote) was
held on 1st September 1962 and almost 71% of the population voted in
favour of the merger. Singapore merged with Malaya on 16th September
1963.

TASK 3 - Merger and separation
In this gallery, we will be looking at Singapore's merger and separation

By 1965, due to many differences, Tunku Abdul Rahman ( Prime Minister of


Malaysia) felt that it would be best for Singapore to leave Malaysia. On 9
August 1965, an emotional Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew announced
Singapore's separation from the Federation in a live televised press
conference.
