Specific Learning Objective:
1. Describe and illustrate the horizontal and vertical motions of a projectile.

III. Activities
Perform the activities on the next pages. You may ask the help of your parent or
guardian in carrying out the procedures.
Activity 1: Catch Me I’m Falling!
Materials: Soccer ball or basketball, skateboard, smooth floor, table, two similar
coins, used folder or cardboard
Note: If skateboard is not available, you can use a scooter or a cart

Procedure
Skateboard
1. Instruct a person to stand or sit on the skateboard while holding the ball.
2. Roll the skateboard.
3. While the skateboard is moving, instruct the person on the skateboard to toss
the ball straight up into the air. Observe the ball’s trajectory.
Coins
1. Cut the folder into a square 5 inches on each side.
2. Fold the square to make a 2-inch wide “flap”. Position the flap so that it sticks
straight up and down.
3. Place the square on the corner of a table so that the two corners stick out
from both table edges. On one side, place a coin far enough out that is
completely clear of the table. On the other side, place a coin right up against
the fold.
4. Grab the flap and give the cardboard a sharp, smooth twist. Your goal is to
horizontally launch the coin that was placed up against the fold while allowing
the other coin to drop straight to the ground. Listen for the sounds of the coins
hitting the floor.

Horizontal and vertical motion are completely independent of one another. If


you stand in one spot and toss a ball straight up, it will come back to you. That is
actually not a surprise. But the ball also falls right back into your hands even if you are
moving sideways. The vertical (up and down) motion of the ball has absolutely nothing
to do with the horizontal (sideways) motion.
The coin activity shows you the same thing. Both coins fall from the same height
and begin falling at the same time. However, one is fired horizontally off the table while
the other drops straight down. Your instincts might have told you that the launched
coin should take longer to hit the ground because it has greater distance to travel, but
that’s not the case: they both hit the ground at the same time.
Activity 2: Predict where your ball will land!
Materials: empty wrapping paper tube (cylindrical in shape), tape, books,
stopwatch, box cutter, ping pong ball, table, meter stick, markers
Procedure
1. Have an adult use the box cutter to
cut the cardboard tube in half to
create the ramp.
2. Use the piece of paper to draw a
target. You will be trying to get the ball
to land on the target on the floor,
accurately as possible.
3. Stack some books on the table and
tape the top of the cardboard tube to
the book on top to make a ramp.

4. Measure the length of the ramp.

5. Use the stopwatch to time how long it takes for the ball to slide down the
ramp. Use this to time to calculate the velocity the ball will have when it goes to
the edge of the table:

6. It may be helpful to measure the time several times to have an accurate
measurement.
7. Measure the height of the table to the ground. Using the acceleration of
gravity and a starting velocity of 0 m/s, calculate how long it will take the ball to
fall to the ground. You can do so using the following equation:

8. Now, calculate the distance the ball will travel before hitting the ground (R).
Simply multiply the ball’s velocity by the time you calculated in step 7. Place

Application
The Monkey and the Zookeeper
There is an interesting monkey down at the zoo. The monkey spends
most of its day hanging from a limb of a tree. The zookeeper feeds the monkey
by shooting bananas from a banana cannon located on the same height as the
monkey in the tree. This monkey has a habit of dropping from the tree the
moment that the banana leaves the muzzle of the cannon.
The zookeeper is faced with the dilemma of where to aim the banana
cannon to hit the monkey. If the monkey lets go of the tree the moment that the
banana is fired, then where should she aim the banana cannon?

Show your answer by illustrating the trajectory of the banana and the path of the
monkey. Then, provide a short explanation on the space provided.
