THE OMEGA ORIGINS

IT HAS BEEN SAID that hundreds of years ago, werewolves roamed free, dominating the land and all
other creatures. Men that easily slipped into their wolf form at will, they were savage and
unforgiving. Destroying anything that crossed their paths.
Humans kept their distance from the unhinged animals until a young noblewoman found herself
lost in the enchanted forests. A werewolf found her and they fell in love, and she birthed twins. The
first Beta and Omega.
The Omega, unable to transform into its wolf, was a gentle creature, fragile and obedient. The
perfect mate for the more aggressive Alpha werewolf.
The Beta had more beastly characteristics but could only shift into its wolf when the Moon hung at
her fullest. Calm and smart, the child held the perfect balance between human and wolf.
The birth was hard and bloody, and the noblewoman died, her body unable to handle the horrors
of birthing beasts. But she left behind a new breed of weres, creating a fragile balance between wolf
and man.
The villages grew, bursting with werewolves of all kinds: Alphas, Betas, and Omegas. And soon,
the humans realized the wolves finally had a weakness. Their mates, the Omegas.
The humans attacked, slaughtering hundreds of the gentle creatures, pushing werewolves almost to
the point of extinction until the fairylands came to their rescue. Fighting the humans and staving them
off. Reclaiming Havre as a land of enhancement and magic.
To protect their kind from any further attacks, the Alphas locked their Omegas away in villages
fortified with large border walls, shutting them in and keeping them safe.
ONE
THE SEWING CIRCLE

Mina

I HISSED , popping my fingertip in my mouth and sucking hard. It always amazed me how the tiniest
prick of a needle could hurt so much. I examined my wound and squeezed it, cringing at the tiny drop
of blood that pushed up in the center. At this rate, my finger was going to be littered with teeny holes.
"Careful there, youngin'," Pearl flashed a gummy smile. "Or that pretty tapestry is going to be
splattered red."
I nodded politely at the elder, smoothing out the white and gold fabric on my lap. The delicate silk
was dotted with tiny glass beads, feeling both rough and sleek beneath my fingertips.
"Mina." Summer leaned toward me, her frizzy blonde hair falling into her face. "Is the presence of
a certain alpha too distracting?" she hummed, raising her eyebrows in a suggestive manner.
"Stop it," I whispered harshly, hoping no one overheard her. As much as I loved the young omega,
she was too eager to find distractions. "Finish your embroidery," I scolded, giving her stitchwork a
pointed look. Her nose scrunched as she bunched up her green and red wreath, hiding the design from
me. "The festival is tomorrow, and the walls will be half bare at this rate. I swear you move slower
than a turtle stuck in mud."
"You sound like my mother." Summer gave me a teasing glare. "And it's not like you'd notice the
walls anyway. With Ivor there, the entire village could burn to ash, and you wouldn't have a clue.
Oh!" She perked up, pointing out the window at a tall, muscular figure. "There he goes again!"
"There goes who?" Pearl's bushy brows raised at the prospect of gossip.
"No one," I said quickly, hoping she'd go back to her needlework. I pulled my tapestry up to my
face, pretending to concentrate very hard on an iridescent gold bead.
"What's happening?" Helena, Pearl's twin sister, asked loudly.
The two elderly omegas weren't exact copies of one another, but their resemblance still made it
difficult to tell them apart sometimes. They had the same sleek gray hair, bright brown eyes, and
matching gummy smiles that exuded far too much mischief.
"Who is that?" Pearl squinted out the window. The figure strolled off, continuing his patrol of the
area.
"Alpha Ivor." Summer quickly offered. I glared at her, and the brat's smile didn't falter in the least.
"What?" Her voice pitched higher, feigning innocence. "It's rude not to answer your elders."
I scowled, trying like hell not to look outside, but I couldn't help it. Ivor came into view once
again. He stopped and scanned the yard, a look of fierce intensity on his face.
He was so handsome.
A neat, short beard covered the sharp cut of his jaw and his dirty blond hair was a bit wild, the
wind whipping the long locks into his face. He turned his head slightly, and his soft brown eyes met
mine. I let out a quick squeak and snapped my head down. My face burned with embarrassment at
being caught staring.
"Ivor is mighty attractive," Helena smirked, glancing between me and the window. "With his
strength and your hips, you'd have very sturdy pups."
I stifled a groan and buried my face in my work.
Since the day I came of age, the older omegas took every chance they had to comment on my curvy
shape and how much an alpha would appreciate it.
Hoping no one noticed me, I peeked out the window once again at Ivor's impressive form. He was
so tall and broad, with muscles so thick they even flexed when he stood still. He crossed his arms,
pushing his pecs together. His shoulders seemed to double in size. How was it possible for shoulders
to be so sexy?
My mind wandered as I imagined once again what I'd say to him.
Ivor was kind, considerate, and wonderfully giving of his time. He had helped my brother many
times over the last few months. As a new member of the guard, Nix was still learning and a bit
clumsy, but Ivor never so much as raised his voice. I was determined to tell the alpha how much I
adored him, but now that he was so close, I suddenly couldn't remember my own name, let alone how
to tell him I had feelings for him.
I sighed hard as my courage scattered, disappearing like a mess of rabbits in a fox's den.
Pearl laughed, and Summer groaned, the elder omegas finally turning their attention to something
other than me. My eyes pulled to my gray wool coat hanging on the wall. The tiny box tucked in the
inside pocket seemed to hum, mocking me for being so spineless. I had carried the little gift around
every day for the last two weeks, trying to gather my courage to give it to Ivor. It wasn't customary for
omegas to make the first move, but if I waited for an alpha to approach me, I'd die of old age. Pathetic
and alone.
For months, I had been trying to tell Ivor about the intense pull I felt toward him, but I chickened
out every single time. And now, with Pearl and Helena throwing me knowing smiles and playful
winks, there was no way I was going to approach him and let the entire sewing circle see my fumbled
attempt to flirt.
I would have other chances to speak to Ivor.
I hoped.
"Everything okay, pup?" My mother's voice made me sit up straight.
A swirl of white flurries swept inside the cozy cottage with her. She gripped the front of her coat
under her chin, shivering. It was very cold, and I suddenly regretted picking a short velvety dress with
only red and white striped leggings. I thought it would be a cute and festive outfit, but now it just
seemed stupid.
Her fur-lined boots, similar to mine, were coated in crunchy white snow.
"I'm good," I said quickly, hoping my smile looked natural and relaxed. Her eyes narrowed at my
expression, twin lines settling between her brows. "I'm just trying to finish my piece." I held up my
tapestry so she could see the design.
The delicate white fabric was covered in gold and silver thread, depicting the stars and an ornate
Moon embellished with shimmering gold beads. It was my best piece yet, and I was proud of it.
"Oh, Mina," Mother gasped, pressing her hand to her chest. She ran her fingertips over the edge of
the Moon. I had spent the better half of the hour perfecting it. "The beads are a lovely touch. The
whole pack is going to love it."
"At least they'll have something pretty to distract them from my monstrosity." Summer held up her
patch of fabric. The stitchwork was careful but too widely spaced, making the wreath look a little
lopsided and sporadic.
"You're not even of age yet," Pearl barked at the youngling. "When I was your age, I couldn't even
do a half-stitch, let alone detailed embroidery."
"It's true," Helena smiled sweetly at Summer. "And we tend to work a little harder when trying to
impress someone, so try not to compare your work to Mina's." Her mischievous brown eyes turned to
me, and dread slipped down my spine. I prayed she wouldn't mention Ivor in front of my mother. I
hadn’t told her about my feelings about the alpha, and while I didn’t think she’d object, this wasn’t the
time for such a discussion.
"And Mina has been quilting since she was ten," Mother smiled, smoothing my long, brown hair
out of my face.
"Joyce," Pearl said, leaning forward in her rocker, "when are you going to mate this one off?"
It took everything in me not to roll my eyes.
Mother answered the same way she always did. Sweet, soft, and with a smile on her face, "When
she's ready."
I always felt bad when she had to offer excuses for me. At twenty-five, I was a bit old to be
unclaimed, but my father passed away when I was young, and both my parents were only children,
which meant I had no family to arrange meetings with interested alphas.
"Isn't Nix of age now?" Pearl asked.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, knowing exactly where this was going. Nix was only just now
twenty, and no self-respecting alpha would ask someone so young for his sister's hand.
Helena nodded fiercely at her sister, agreeing with her. "Surely Nix can—"
The door opened, and I let out a sigh of relief at the interruption. My brother's head popped inside
the door, his eyes zeroing in on our mother.
"I'm so sorry, Omega Pearl." My mother squeezed my shoulder, just as happy as I was for the
change in subject. "I'm late and need to get to the kitchens. Mina, sweetie, are you helping decorate
the lodge tonight?"
I nodded, hoping she wasn't going to say I couldn't. Decorating for the winter solstice was one of
my all-time favorite things, and a silly storm wouldn't deter me.
"The weather is getting a little wild out here," Nix warned.
A gust of especially harsh wind cut through the crack in the door, making me regret my choice of a
short velvety dress and leggings. Both Pearl and Helena yelled out for Nix to get in or out. Not
wanting a tongue lashing, he quickly jerked his head back outside, pulling the door shut with a bang.
My mother smiled apologetically at the elders. Both shivered, pulling tight at the shawls draped
over their shoulders. Helena mumbled something about disrespectful pups.
"Decorating might have to wait until tomorrow." Mother tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. It
immediately fell back into my face, my unruly waves never wanting to do what they were told.
"Can I at least take everyone’s pieces up there tonight?" I asked. "I don't want to trudge all the
way back here in the morning just to have to cross the village again to get to the lodge."
She pressed her lips together, looking out the window. Fat snowflakes beat against the glass, the
ground barely visible beneath the heavy dusting of white. Placing her fingertips under my elbow, she
guided me toward the door. Pearl and Helena leaned in, trying to hear.
"Mina." She smiled, but it looked a little off. Too tight. “Come,” she said, pulling me toward the
door and away from the group. I followed her, my nerves prickling from her stiff posture. She leaned
in, whispering, "Alpha Ari is outside and has requested to walk you home."
Startled, I gripped her forearm. "Why? What happened?" I hadn't seen Ari since my father passed,
and having such a high-ranking alpha request my presence had to mean bad news.
Mother's voice dropped even lower as she turned her back to the room. "I think he might be
interested…." She stared at me as if waiting for me to realize something. I shook my head, not having
a clue. "I think he might want to court you."
I leaned away from her, not sure what to say. "He's old enough to be my father," I whispered in
disbelief.
"Yes," she hesitated, trying to find the right words, "but…um…you haven't…."
Shame warmed my cheeks, and I stared at my feet. "I haven't found anyone that actually wants
me." I finished her sentence for her.
Mother placed her hands on her hips, her fierce eyes blazing. "Mina," she snipped in a hushed
tone. "I will not let you talk that way about yourself. You are beautiful, kind, and smart."
Pearl whispered something to her sister. Summer spoke loudly, asking the twins for help with her
wreath, trying to give us some privacy.
I stepped a little closer to my mother, keeping my voice down. Everyone was looking at us,
despite how hard Summer tried to distract them. "Then why has no one approached you about courting
me?"
My mother's expression shifted as if I had said something ridiculous and insulting at the same
time. But it was true. Most alphas expressed interest a year or so before an omega turned of age so
they could mate as soon as they turned twenty. But no one had ever approached my mother about me,
and I honestly didn't understand why. I wasn't bad to look at, and I wasn't useless. I could sew and
cook and always tried to be agreeable. No one could ever accuse me of being disrespectful.
And now, Alpha Ari wanted to walk me home.
He had been a good friend of my father's. Growing up, I remembered him sitting on the porch with
my dad, drinking whiskey and laughing about old war wounds. I couldn't help but think of him as an
old man.
Could I actually be with him?
I would be a fool not to. He was captain of the Pack Alpha's guard, and no omega would dare turn
away such a respectable wolf.
I glanced out the window, disappointed that Ivor was nowhere in sight.
My mother smoothed her hands down my arms, caressing the velvety black fabric of my dress.
"How about if Ari walks you to the lodge?"
I smiled as brightly as I could, nodding. "That would be lovely."
"But make sure Nix is with you, so you two aren't alone. While Ari is a very honorable wolf, we
still don't want to invite rumors."
I nodded quickly. "Yes, ma'am."
"Once you drop off your things, head home. No fussing," she said in a stern, motherly tone. "You
can decorate in the morning. They're saying the storm might be brutal tonight."
A shadow crossed the window again. Ivor's presence was like a thread pulling at every corner of
my mind, and it took everything in me not to look. My desperation to speak to the alpha suddenly felt
urgent.
I couldn't be friendly to Ari without knowing how Ivor felt. If he had no interest in me, that was
fine. I would sob uncontrollably, then pick up the pieces of my broken heart and move on. Maybe
even let Alpha Ari sit with me at the festival. But I had to know for sure.
I glanced again at my coat.
Perhaps my gift was too personal. Maybe Ivor would take one look at it, laugh, and walk away,
ready to tell everyone about the silly omega that tried to court him.
Determined, I balled up my fists. The next time I saw Ivor, I was going to tell him how I felt.
TWO
JUST OUTSIDE

Ivor

"IVOR!"
"Rowan!" I mimicked my best friend's overly excited tone.
He jogged toward me, his dark complexion rosy around his cheeks. The goofy grin on his face
widened as he approached. Something had him in a pretty good mood, and I was sure I knew what it
was.
"How's Lily?" I asked, smirking at the dusting of flour on the back of his hands.
He cocked his head. "How did you know I just saw her?" I pointed at the dough caked around his
nails. He snorted, picking at it. "I think she's warming up to me." He sounded a little unsure. He
should be. The skittish omega had a reputation for keeping her distance from alphas, but Rowan was
determined to crack through her guarded exterior.
"Done with omega duty?" he asked, motioning to the sewing cottage.
"Not yet. A few are still finishing up inside."
"Nix is here." Rowan pointed at the young alpha sitting on the porch. Then his eyes shifted to the
older wolf standing next to the door. "And so is Captain Ari."
"Your point?" I tried not to sound annoyed, but Ari's presence had me on edge. The older alpha
had walked over with Mina's mother. Were the rumors true? Was he pursuing Mina? The thought made
me want to rip the cottage apart, board by board, and steal the sweet omega away.
"One of them can watch over the cottage. I need help with the yule log."
"You don't need help with the fucking yule log," I said, narrowing my eyes at Ari's back.
Rowan wrung his hands together, eyeing a few betas as they passed. They pulled their collars up
against the cold, rushing down the hill and toward the cabins. "I need to show you something," he
spoke as if the whole village might overhear.
"What?" I asked, not taking my eyes off the porch. It looked as if Ari had gotten a haircut. He
usually kept it a bit long, but it was trim. Very trim. Was he trying to impress someone?
Rowan leaned into my ear as if sharing priceless information. "I got Lily something, and I wanted
your opinion."
I couldn't help but laugh at the dopey look on my friend's face. He was beyond lovesick. "Isn't this
the time of year for omegas to gift their alphas with trinkets of their affection?"
"Omegas in relationships exchange gifts. Lily isn't mine." He pulled his mouth tight as if frustrated
by the fact. I understood his pain. "Not yet, anyway. She hasn't exactly been open to my advances."
"Been open?" I laughed. "Rowan, you've managed to fall for the only omega in the history of time
that wants nothing to do with alphas."
"She's shy," he snapped. "And both her parents are betas," he made a face at the uncommon
occurrence, "so she doesn't spend much time with our kind. But I'm going to win her over. I'm going to
make my move." He pulled out a small black box tied with a bright yellow ribbon. The bow was
lopsided and unraveling.
"Is this your move?" I teased, eyeing the frayed ribbon. "A poorly wrapped present? Did you tie it
yourself?"
A shit-eating smirk lifted one side of his mouth. "It's better than standing outside the sewing
cottage, waiting to catch a glimpse of an omega I don't have the balls to talk to."
My expression instantly fell, but I tried like hell to pull it back into place. "I have no interest in
Omega Mina." My wolf snarled at my lie.
"How did you know I meant Mina?"
Refusing to answer, I glared at the tiny cottage. Then at Ari. "I'd be stupid to pursue her with
Captain Ari already expressing interest."
"You don't know for a fact Ari's placed a claim. You could still approach her." He tucked the box
back into his pocket. "Why haven't you?"
"Not everyone is comfortable skirting the rules and pursuing omegas without the proper channels.
Mina has no kin to discuss placing a claim." I snarled at the fact. "It doesn't help that her father was a
high-ranking official that died a warrior's death." I sighed hard, wishing like hell Mina was just the
daughter of a merchant or shopkeeper and I could take her without any thought or consequence.
"You could still try," Rowan said, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Sometimes you have to suck it
up and spend a whole afternoon mixing eggs and butter just to get two sentences out of an omega. You
have to do things you don't like, but it's worth it." He smiled wide, too lovesick to realize how
ridiculous he looked.
"It's not the same. Approaching Mina's omega mother to place a claim would look…." I shook my
head, so fucking frustrated. "Joyce might feel very uncomfortable or overwhelmed talking to an alpha
about her daughter. Some might think I forced her to give her blessing, or worse, she might actually
feel forced."
"Nix can—"
"I've been working with her little brother since he came of age. Nix is my trainee. Asking him to
claim his sister would completely change our dynamic. And if he said no…." I snarled, enraged that I
couldn't just storm into the fucking cabin and take what I already knew was mine. My beast growled
deep within me, urging me to take Mina and claim her as my own. I shoved my wolf back, knowing I'd
never be able to do that to the sweet omega. Mina was too kind and beautiful. She deserved an
honorable courting. A proper mate. Not a lout like me.
"So you have thought about claiming her?" Rowan said as if making his point.
"It doesn't fucking matter now, does it?" I snapped. "I am beneath Mina, and Ari isn't. That's all
that matters."
Rowan glanced past me at the cabin. "Then I guess you don't care that Ari is escorting Mina
home."
I spun.
Mina handed a bundle of carefully folded fabric to her friend, Summer, then tightened the blue
scarf around her neck. She tucked it up, displaying only the tip of her nose and gorgeous brown eyes.
Her cheeks were already pink from the chill in the air, and snowflakes clung to her dark hair.
Fuck, she was beautiful.
Captain Ari said something to her, and she bowed her head, walking slowly next to him. Her
black boots crunched into the snow as she walked away from me. I didn't miss the shiver that worked
through her shoulders. I wanted so badly to pick her up and carry her. It was far too cold for omegas
to walk.
She disappeared around the side of the cottage, and my heart sank a bit, already missing her.
Rowan bumped his shoulder into mine. The goofy fucking grin that consumed his whole face made me
want to punch him.
"You should ask her to sit with you at the festival."
"I will not chase after another wolf's claim," I said flatly, wishing like hell I had the status to
challenge someone as honorable as Captain Ari for her hand.
"She has no real interest in Ari," Rowan said as if it were a fact.
I stepped a little closer to him. "How do you know?"
"The look on her face," he said as if it were obvious.
I snorted, shoving down the intense disappointment that settled in my gut. "So now you can tell
when omegas have no interest in alphas?"
"I can when it's that obvious."
"And what do you see when you look at Lily?"
He flashed his white teeth in a big grin. "A challenge."
I laughed, slapping him on the shoulder. "Come on. Let's get the yule log."
I glanced back in the direction Mina had gone, feeling defeated all over again.
THREE
THE LODGE

Mina

"YOU ARE VERY TALENTED ," Ari said as I hung my tapestry from the tiny nail. It swung a little lopsided
for a moment, and I fussed to straighten it, eager for an excuse not to look at the alpha.
"Thank you," I whispered, not sure what to say. Seeing him as anything other than my father's
friend and not a prospective mate was next to impossible. Ari's sandy brown hair was gray along his
sideburns, and his beard was almost entirely white. His eyes crinkled as he smiled at my tapestry,
appreciating every detail. He really was very nice, or at least he was to me. Perhaps that would be
enough to make a good match.
"How do you come up with the ideas for your designs?" he asked.
"I'm not sure," I shrugged, admiring the gold beads that formed the star. "I pick a pretty bit of
fabric. Then I let my fingers decide for me."
He pulled his brows together, thinking. "Interesting."
I hummed, fighting the urge to yawn.
"You make such lovely things with so much care. I'm sure you will make a wonderful mate one
day."
A flicker of distress moved over me, and I dropped my gaze to the floor. Keeping my mannerisms
bashful, I hoped he saw me as too shy for such a discussion and wouldn't press further. I was fully
aware of how ridiculous I was being. After all, this was what I wanted more than anything—a mate. I
prayed for an alpha to want me, and now here he was.
But he wasn't Ivor.
My mind pulled to my silly gift, and my chest squeezed at the indignity of my actions. I was
entertaining one alpha while still hoping to woo another. There was a word for omegas like me….
Summer moved on the other side of the room, catching my eye. She smiled wide at me, raising her
brows and blowing silent kisses. I wanted to smack her silly.
"Omega Mina." I startled as Ari grabbed my hand, his tone suddenly very official. "Thank you for
letting me walk with you and for the lovely conversation. Would you allow me to escort you to the
festival tomorrow?"
Pulling my lips into a wide smile, I nodded. It would be rude to reject him. And it wasn't like I
had a line of suitors waiting to dance with me.
Ari turned on his heel and marched across the room without a second glance. Nix bowed his head
at the older alpha, but Ari didn't stop to acknowledge him. I pressed my lips together, reminding
myself that Ari wasn't being rude. They were both members of the guard. This was how captains and
low-ranking guards acted. But it still seemed so cold.
The moment the door closed behind Ari, Nix turned to me and groaned, "How much longer?"
"If you want to leave, then leave," I snipped at my brother, turning to my tapestry. I spotted a few
snagged threads along the border and pulled the sewing kit out of my pocket.
Nix huffed, then left, slamming the heavy door behind him. He did this all the time, thinking it
might make me move faster to know he was outside and ready to go, but it never worked. I would
leave when I was good and ready.
Summer sided up next to me, bumping her shoulder to mine. "You are such a perfectionist."
I caressed the fabric lovingly. "I want the pack to love it."
"Of course, they will. Alpha Ari doted on your tapestry the whole way here. It really is
gorgeous." She narrowed her eyes at her design hanging next to mine. She looked at it as if it had
personally offended her.
"He did not dote," I corrected her. "He said it was nice."
Summer's voice dipped to a soft whisper, all sass gone. "Do you think you'll mate him?" I was
surprised to see so much understanding in her big blue eyes. All omegas lived in fear of being mated
off to wolves they didn't love, but it wasn't always for us to decide.
"He hasn't said that he wants anything official. He's just…." I fiddled with the needle, smoothing
the pointy end between my fingers. "He's just being nice."
"He is very handsome. Although," her goofy smile returned, "he isn't as handsome as Ivor." She
nuzzled my cheek, and I swatted lazily at her.
Noticing a wonky thread poking out of the center of her wreath, I pointed to it and held up the
sewing kit. She waved it off, then pulled the thread. It slipped right out, sending two beads smacking
into the floor. They bounced and rolled away, hiding under the piano. Summer groaned, not bothering
to go after them.
"Do you want me to fix that for you?" I asked, motioning to her very sad wreath.
"No point." She shrugged. "Next to your masterpiece, it'll be hideous no matter what." I opened
my mouth to assure the youngling her piece was lovely, but she held up her hand, stopping me. "I
already know what you're going to say, and there's no sense lying to each other. I'm a horrible
seamstress, and this," she motioned to my design, "is perfection."
I smiled at her sweet compliment. "Thank you," I said, kissing her cheek.
She narrowed her eyes at me in a teasing glare. "I'm sure Ivor will adore it."
"Stop it." I poked her side, making her squeal. "I'm sure Alpha Ivor has many prospects. The
blacksmith's daughter practically threw herself at him at the last bonfire. He even walked her home." I
tried not to sound bitter about it, but I couldn't help it.
Summer grabbed my hand, her usually playful expression suddenly serious. "That alpha spends
every celebration, festival, and pack meeting staring at you and only you."
My wolf thrilled at the thought, but it was hard to believe. Ivor was the kind of alpha that made
you stop what you were doing and stare. His very presence demanded your full attention. He had
many prospects, and an aging omega like me didn't stand a chance. But I would live the rest of my life
in complete misery if I didn't at least tell him how I felt.
"Face it," Summer cooed. "Ivor likes you. It doesn't really surprise me. Seamstresses have a
reputation for being very skilled with their," she paused, her eyes widening dramatically, "hands."
I gasped, playfully slapping her arm.
She batted her long lashes at me, not the least bit detoured. "Later, try to blush and giggle when
Ivor compliments your work. Alphas love that."
"And how do you know what alphas love? You're barely nineteen."
"I have four older sisters," she snorted. "All I ever hear about is what alphas love. And trust me,
it's all incredibly scandalous."
"Is blushing scandalous?"
"Depends on what parts of you flush pink." Summer popped the p in the word pink, raising her
eyebrows suggestively.
"I'm done with your flirty eyes today." I pressed a few pieces of thread into her hands. "Throw
this away, and I'll get my coat out of the kitchen so we can head out."
One of the heavy double doors cracked, then flung open, banging loudly against the wall. A tightly
bundled omega rushed in, struggling not to fall over with the crazed wind. Trying to latch the door,
she grunted and heaved, but another burst of snow shoved it back. Summer and I rushed to her,
pushing with all our might.
"Oh my goodness." Summer laughed once it was secured shut. She reached for the omega's
skewed hat, dusting the thick layer of snow off.
Lily's sleek black hair stuck out in all directions as she removed her scarf and unbuttoned her
heavy coat. "Well," she huffed, "I spent all morning finishing up the centerpiece for the main table,
and it blew away on my way here." She shrugged as if it didn't matter, but her eyes were a little
glassy.
"I'm so sorry." I squeezed her, shivering as the thick layer of snow that stuck to her coat soaked
through my thin sleeves. "Summer and I almost lost our things on the way here as well."
"I guess there's nothing for it." She pulled off her mittens, looking around the lodge. "I came
anyway to see if you needed help, but everything looks amazing."
She was right. It really did.
Our pack always went all out, making sure the winter festival was grand. Ivy, holly, and red and
gold ribbons covered every surface in the great room. Lush sprigs of mistletoe hung from doorways,
arches, and the banister that led upstairs, and in the center of the room, the evergreen stood tall and
proud, almost touching the steepled ceiling.
The whole space smelled of pine, spice, and mulled wine. I let out a contented sigh.
I loved this time of year.
Looking over the perfectly placed ornaments, Lily stepped closer to the enormous tree. "The pups
did a wonderful job this year," she said, admiring a bright blue paper flower.
The evergreen was covered in dried flowers, lights, bundles of cinnamon, and ribbons tied in
beautiful braids and twisted to create shapes; colorful stars, moons, and animals covered the whole
tree. Wolves were, of course, the most popular, but I loved the silly ones the most, especially the fish
the pups created in the schoolhouse. They were sloppy and misshapen and far too adorable not to be
loved.
Summer dusted some snow off Lily's shoulders. "I saw Alpha Rowan outside. Did he escort you
here?"
I was thankful she had someone else to tease.
"He and Alpha Ivor were headed this way purely by coincidence," Lily said in an overly casual
manner, but I could see the smile tugging at the corners of her lips.
"You like him," I said, a little shocked. Lily had an awful experience when she was young and
was terrified of all alphas. Except for Nix, but he was more like family.
"Rowan is very sweet," she said simply, running her fingers through her long, silky hair. "But my
parents don't really know how to handle prospective alphas. It's making the whole process…a bit
slow. I don't even know if Rowan has talked to my father about claiming me yet, and I'm just," she
sighed hard, flopping her hands at her sides, "I'm just tired. I've been of-age all of ten minutes, and the
single alphas in this village have descended on me like, like….wolves!" she laughed. "If Rowan
doesn't make a move soon, I'm worried my father will hand me over to someone else."
"Rowan's father is a rather high-ranking official," I said. "Your father is no dummy. He'll pick
Rowan. You won't get stuck with someone stuffy."
"Like Ari?" she snorted.
I groaned. "Does everyone know?"
"Yes," Lily and Summer said together.
"It wouldn't be so bad if every memory I had of him wasn't somehow tied to my dad. And…" I
hesitated, not wanting to insult the alpha, but no one else was here, "he's just so muted."
"It'll be okay," Lily kissed my cheek.
I tried not to feel jealous of her situation. I had spent the last five years praying someone—anyone
—would show some kind of interest in me. I glanced at the door, thinking about Ari. I guess I got my
wish.
"We should probably head home before the weather gets too bad," Summer said, adjusting the
garland hanging over the door frame. Even on her tiptoes, she didn't quite reach. Her fingers brushed
the edge, and the whole thing fell forward, smacking onto the floor. She glared at it. "Yup. Let's go
before I burn the whole lodge down."
"Let me get my coat out of the kitchen." I walked across the room to gather my things. I still
wanted to fuss with my tapestry, but the view out the massive window at the back of the lodge was a
little concerning. The wind was so thick with snow all I could see was a few blurry, dark shapes
trudging along, and the cabins in the distance were all but gone. Hidden by the flurry of wind.
Summer's and Lily's voices dropped behind me, and they giggled loudly, gossiping about who
knows what. I ignored them and pushed open the kitchen door. It swung wide, pushing the scent of
fresh meats, prepared vegetables, and warm cakes into my face.
My coat sat at the end of the long countertop. I stared at it.
It seemed I wouldn't get my chance to talk to Ivor today. Perhaps there was a reason I hadn't given
him my gift yet. It seemed the Moon didn't want us together.
I pushed down the twist of sadness in my chest and squeezed the kit in my hand, determined not to
cry.
FOUR
OUTSIDE THE LODGE

Ivor

ROWAN GASPED , then dropped the yule log, running toward the lodge. I grunted as it hit my foot,
glaring at my friend.
He rushed to shield Lily from the wind as she exited the lodge. "It's freezing out here," he said,
hovering his hand at the small of her back, careful not to touch her. "Let me take you home."
The shy omega tucked her chin down at Rowan's adoring gaze. She smiled sweetly at her feet,
allowing him to stand close. I had never seen an alpha able to get so near her before. Perhaps Rowan
had won her over.
"Omega Summer." I greeted the young omega as she stepped outside. Her eyes met Lily's for the
briefest of moments before giving me an odd smile.
"Where's Mina?" Nix asked as he rounded the side of the building. I gave him a nod as he
approached. "Hey, Ivor. Are we still on for tomorrow morning?"
I glanced up at the thick gray clouds. The air tingled with electricity. It had been a while since we
had a winter thunderstorm, and it was clear from the cutting wind this storm would be rough. I just
hoped it didn't put a damper on the festival.
"I think the weather is going to be hard tonight," I said. "We should wait until after the winter
solstice to work on your tracking."
"I was thinking the same." He forced a tight smile, clearly disappointed. He was a damn good
guard, eager to learn and quick to admit when he needed help. I had been working with him one-on-
one for a few months, but it wasn't out of the kindness of my heart. It was a desperate attempt to get a
little closer to his sister, and so far, I had failed miserably.
The wind whistled and blew so hard both Lily and Summer jerked forward. Rowan circled his
arms around Lily's slight form, letting her hold onto his forearms to stand upright. Nix gripped the
back of Summer's coat, jerking her back toward him. She glared at the young alpha, and he scowled
right back.
Once Summer was steady on her feet, Nix turned to the lodge door. "Where the hell is Mina? I
swear she takes forever just to annoy me."
"She left already," Summer said rather quickly. While I didn't know the young omega well, she
was known for speaking fast and laughing loud.
"She left with a few of the service betas after they finished up in the kitchen," Summer continued.
"Alpha Ivor," she turned her fierce energy on me, "I knocked some garland down inside. Can you fix it
for me? My mother would box my ears if she knew I left the lodge worse than I found it."
I agreed, but before asking where the garland was located, Summer grabbed Nix's arm and
dragged him into the flurry of snow and wind. Lily scurried after her, making Rowan jump to stay at
her side. I didn't miss the way his hand lingered near the box tucked securely in his pocket.
I hitched the yule log over my shoulder, then stepped up onto the porch, curious how Mina might
react if I got her a token of my affection. Would she be offended if I didn't go through her brother?
Pushing the thought away, I reminded myself that it didn't matter. It was inappropriate even to
consider pursuing her with Ari so clearly staking a claim. While I had a respectable rank within the
guard, I wasn't an officer like him. Surely, Mina would prefer an alpha with more prestige. Most
omegas would, and I couldn't fault them for it.
The air inside the lodge was cozy and warm, the distinct scent of spice, cloves, and pine tingling
my nose. Lights and garland strung from the windows giving the storm outside an overly festive feel.
With the tree, decorations, and pleasant smells, the whole space was something out of a picture book
my mother read to me as a pup.
I moved to the crackling fire, the charred wood glowing white and red, and dropped the yule log
on the hearth, hoping it would dry by morning. There was nothing worse than the stench of burning
wet wood.
The clatter of a metal tin came from the kitchen. I paused, listening as something rustled. Keeping
my footsteps light, I pushed open the kitchen door, then froze.
Mina stood on a wooden ladder, fiddling with a tin at the top of a tall shelf. She dug through
scraps of string, ribbon, and what looked like twine.
Her brown hair cascaded down her back in thick waves. The long tresses were always a little
unkempt, but I loved it. It made her look witchy and mysterious. Her black dress showed off her trim
waist and the curve of her hips, but her red and white striped leggings looked far too thin for the
weather.
I inhaled deeply, pulling in her soft scent. She smelled sweet—like all omegas—but the gentle
touch of vanilla that rounded out her perfume was so intoxicating it made my mouth water.
Glancing around the room, I realized we were alone, and my wolf was alight at the opportunity to
speak to her privately.
"Omega Mina." My voice boomed in the otherwise quiet room.
Mina squealed in surprise and jerked, making her feet slip. I instantly reacted, racing across the
room and sweeping her up into my arms before she could hit the floor. She dug her fingers into my
biceps, breathing hard and staring at me with wide brown eyes.
She was so small and delicate in my arms. My heart quickened, and I softened my hands, feeling
the curve of her back and thighs. I had never touched her before.
"Alpha Ivor," she gasped as if not believing it was me. She pressed her palm to my chest, and I
wondered if she could feel my thundering heart. As if suddenly realizing she was touching me, she
jerked her hand back, balling it into a tight fist. "You scared me," she whispered, her cheeks flushing
bright red to match her leggings.
"Are you okay?" I asked, my voice surprisingly deep and a little husky. Her eyes dilated at the
sound, and she licked her plump bottom lip.
She mumbled softly, suddenly pushing me away, and I reluctantly released her. She took a few
steps back, clasping her hands in front of her. I stared at her pretty face, enchanted by her big brown
eyes. She had rounded cheeks, soft curved lips, and a little pointed chin. She had to be the most
beautiful omega in all of Madra.
Unable to help myself, I moved a little closer, casting a shadow over her slight form.
Her gaze fell to the kitchen floor, her scent blooming. My wolf leaned into her nervous energy. My
beast liked her flustered, and honestly, so did I. Omegas' perfumes were so fucking potent when they
were bothered, even if it was mean to keep the gentle creatures in such a state.
Mina shivered, and I forced myself to take a step back. I needed to get my wolf under control
before I did something I regretted. The tension left the sweet omega's shoulders, and she tipped her
head up, looking at me with a soft expression.
"What are you doing in here?" I asked, forcing my eyes away from her and to the baskets of
prepared vegetables that covered the countertops. "Are you stealing chard? Or is it the sprouts that
called to you?"
She smiled, scrunching up her nose at the sight of the bitter vegetables. "Actually, my plan was to
hide turnips in my leggings."
"A perfectly reasonable vegetable to steal." I smiled, loving the way she leaned in toward me.
"Skip the cookies and cakes, and go right for the turnips."
"I especially like how hard they are to eat," she teased, biting her bottom lip. "I like it when my
teeth feel like they might break while I'm eating."
"Well, the next time I head to Stone City, I'll be sure to bring you back some boulders to snack
on."
She laughed, the sound light and breathy. My wolf preened at being able to make her giggle like
that, even if it was just silly banter.
"I was looking for something to fix my tapestry," she said, motioning to the tin on the top shelf.
"Did something happen to it?" I hooked my thumbs into my belt to keep from reaching for her. My
fingers tingled with a deep need to feel her velvety dress again.
"Oh, no," she smiled sweetly. "I just like to fuss. One of the beads isn't sitting right, so I was
looking for something smaller."
I loved how much care she took in the delicate things she created. Everyone in the pack begged
her to create quilts for them, and being the sweet omega she was, she always obliged. Even my own
mother had a soft blue throw made by Mina sitting in her favorite chair at home. For the first few
weeks after Mina gifted it, it smelled strongly of her, and I shamefully inhaled the addictive scent
every chance I got.
The things this tiny omega did to me…
"Can I see what you made?" I asked.
"You want to see it?" She looked almost surprised, pressing her little hand over her heart.
"Of course." I straightened my back, eager to see what her skilled fingers had made. "Your
designs are always my favorite part of the pack festivals. There's a reason you always make the main
piece."
Mina opened her mouth as if to say something, then paused, seemingly too touched for words. It
made my heart race. She was talented, kind, and gorgeous, and I wanted to scream it from the
rooftops.
Clasping her hands under her chin, Mina smiled at her feet as she edged around me and into the
main room.
In the spot of honor, behind where our Pack Alpha would sit, was a stunning white and gold
tapestry hanging on the wall. The soft fabric held an intricate design of the Moon and several stars
twisted with gold and silver thread. A few delicately placed beads shimmered in the dim light.
"This is stunning," I whispered, examining the edge of the Moon. The threads appeared braided,
but I couldn't tell how they were secured in place. "Your hands do such wonderful things." Mina's
eyes widened slightly, and the tips of her ears went pink. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," she said quickly, ducking her head in a bashful manner. "Thank you. For the
compliment."
My wolf pawed at the inside of my chest, urging me to snatch her up and scent her. Carry her
away so no one but me could see and love her. "It's true," I said, trying like hell to ignore my beast.
"Everything you do is amazing."
Mina lifted her chin, her brown eyes looking deep into mine. The space between us seemed to
warm with something wonderful and exciting. Her lips parted, the tip of her pink tongue just barely
visible. I wanted to taste that wet mouth more than anything else in this world. Consequences be
damned.
I reached out, touching her long tresses between my thumb and forefinger. She didn't move away,
and hope bloomed in my chest. Mina's soft throat worked as she swallowed, her full breasts rising
and falling as her breath picked up.
"Mina," I growled. A shudder worked through her, and I snatched an arm around her waist, jerking
her to me. I couldn't have stopped myself even if I wanted to. My pull to her was outside of my
control. It was like the darkness that hugged the Moon each night—we were meant for each other.
Desperate to feel more of her, I splayed my hand across her lower back, then leaned down and purred
into her ear. "I'm going to kiss you."
A soft whimper left her lips as she pushed herself onto her tiptoes, inviting me closer. I hovered
just over her soft lips, her sweet breath fanned over my face, then I—
A loud pop cracked the air, followed by the explosive sound of glass shattering and the wind
howling. Mina screamed and pushed herself against my chest. I turned my body to shield her from the
noise, cradling the back of her head and pressing her flush against me.
Confused, it took me a moment to focus on the chaos that had just erupted inside the once peaceful
hall.
A heavy branch hung awkwardly through the large window on the other side of the room. It shook
and jerked with the wind, sending more shards of glass skittering across the floor. I stared at the
damage for a moment before resolving myself to not being able to fix it. At least not while the storm
raged. It would have to wait.
For now, I needed to get Mina out of here.
Scooping her up, I made my way back to the kitchen. Her small hands pressed between us, her
fingers like ice. Once inside, I sat her on the counter, forcing my hands away from her. Snow clung to
her wavy hair, framing her face like a wild mane.
I looked over her face and trembling hands, fighting the urge to scent her properly. I needed to
make sure she wasn't injured, but if I touched her again, I wouldn't be able to stop. "Are you okay?" I
asked.
Her lips moved, but the violent storm raging on the other side of the door made it hard to hear her.
She cleared her throat, then spoke louder, "W-what was that?"
"The big oak out back decided to come in through the main window." I smiled, trying to make light
of it. I didn't want her to become more distressed than she already was.
Mina gasped, suddenly sitting up tall and alert. "The festival! It's tomorrow! How will we—"
I held up my hand, quieting her. I wanted so badly to laugh at her concern over a simple party,
especially since the storm was likely wreaking havoc all over the village, but I didn't have it in me to
tease her with so much sorrow in her eyes.
"I don't think the festival will be happening tomorrow," I said.
Her hands fell into her lap, a look of defeat on her pretty face. "But we worked so hard. Everyone
will be devastated."
Glancing around the kitchen, I took note of the baskets of vegetables and dried fruits. Several
casks of mulled wine were stacked in the corner, and even a barrel of amber whiskey sat ready to be
tapped and enjoyed. The pack had worked very hard, but mother nature had other plans.
Mina's coat lay across the end of the counter, and I quickly grabbed it, draping it over her
shoulders. I inhaled deeply, pulling in her scent. She seemed calmer, but her usually sweet scent was
definitely muted. Her tender heart was disappointed, that was for sure, but I was pleased that she
wasn't distressed anymore.
"Are you—" I froze, scenting the air. A slight tinge of copper filled my chest.
Blood.
My eyes darted over Mina's small body.
"What's wrong?" she whispered.
I didn't answer, too intent on finding the source of her injury. The sleeves of her dress were intact,
and there were no tears or marks along her chest, but then my gaze moved over her legs. I crouched
down, gently placing one hand behind her knee and the other on her heel.
She squirmed, struggling to meet my eyes, but she didn't pull away. "W-what are you doing?"
"You're cut," I said, looking at the small piece of glass sticking out of her calf. I held her leg up a
little higher, noting the position. I know it was nothing to be too concerned about, but I couldn't help
the panic that was building in my chest.
"Is it bad?" Mina asked, her eyes wide and her hands clasped tight.
"No," I assured her. "But it might hurt once your adrenaline wears off." Not wanting to draw it
out, I grabbed the shard and quickly pulled, thankful to find the cut to be fairly shallow.
"All done." I held the piece of glass up to prove it.
"Oh…oh my." Her words were a little slurred, and her head wobbled.
Pulling her to my chest, I held her to me while she caught her breath. Her skin was already
clammy. "Careful there," I whispered, caressing her long hair. It was so fucking thick and soft. The
kind of hair you wanted to wrap tight in your fist as you forced your mate to look up at you.
Mina breathed deeply through her mouth, pressing her cheek over my heart. Unable to help myself,
I leaned down and sniffed the top of her head. The rich scent of vanilla was so fucking strong this
close. It lingered sweet on the back of my tongue. My wolf growled possessively, making my hands
tighten around her shoulders and back, holding her to me.
"Are you okay?" she whispered, looking up at me.
"Yes. Why?"
"Your heart is beating very fast." She flattened a palm over my pec. I didn't miss how her breath
hitched before curling her fingers in. Her bashful mannerisms and intense scent had my beast spinning.
Fuck, I wanted to kiss her.
"Alpha," Mina whispered, leaning away from me. "Um, I…" She fiddled with her coat, pulling it
open to expose the lining. A bright red ribbon poked out of an inside pocket. It was clearly a gift. A
gift for Ari?
"Let me clean your wound." I forced myself away from her, going in search of bandages. Only
moments ago, I was willing to throw away my honor to take her, but Mina didn't belong to me. She
was Ari's, and my wolf yowled loudly at the thought.
The medical kit was easy to find, and I quickly had ointment and bandages ready to tend to her.
She blushed wildly as she slipped off her leggings so I could properly clean the cut. I didn't mean to
stare, but her dress rode up a bit, and I had to forcefully turn my head and squeeze my eyes shut to
keep from losing my mind.
"Nix!" Mina squeaked, and I spun toward the door, looking for her brother. "No," she said,
tapping my forearm. "He's waiting for me outside. He's stuck in the storm!"
"Nix took Summer home earlier," I said. "He and Rowan left with Summer and Lily."
Mina's mouth fell open, sadness clear in her shocked expression. "How could they just leave
me?" she whispered to herself.
"Actually," I narrowed my eyes, remembering, "Summer and Lily said you were already gone.
Summer asked me to fix something in the main room, then they all left."
Mina pressed her pretty lips into a tight line. While none of my immediate kin were omegas, I had
known more than a few fiery ones in my time. I had seen many omegas' swift tempers followed by a
flurry of curse words, but Mina wasn't like that. She was soft and quiet. Even as I watched the
frustration grow in her eyes, she was still so composed.
The sound of the wind ripping through the main room filled the kitchen. Mina clutched the front of
her coat, her angry expression still firmly in place, as a shiver worked through her. Her teeth
chattered, and I picked her up.
"What are you doing?" she blurted out, digging her fingers into my shoulders.
"You're freezing." I pushed open the kitchen door, then walked straight to the staircase near the
main entrance. Taking the steps two-by-two, I made my way toward the old guest rooms. They were
still used on occasion when the pack hosted several visitors, but for the most part, they remained
empty.
The first room I entered was cluttered with boxes, old furniture, and a few dusty paintings leaning
against the walls, but the second room had exactly what I was looking for.
A wardrobe, fireplace, and a large bed took up most of the room. The plush bedspread looked
thick and heavy, perfect for the shivering omega in my arms. I settled Mina on the center of the bed,
then took a few steps back, not sure what to do with myself. I wanted to crawl in with her, hold her,
warm her, scent her. Everything about Mina called to my wolf.
Between my pack's traditions and my beast's desires, I was fucked.
Mina pulled at the blanket, tugging it over her lap and around her shoulders. "Shouldn't we head
home?"
"Not with the storm raging like this." I motioned out the small window. "I can't even see the trees
anymore." It was true. Everything outside was just a blur of white.
"My mother is going to be worried sick." Her big eyes were glassy with tears, but I was thankful
when she didn't cry. I wasn't good at comforting omegas. "There's no way to leave?" she asked again,
twisting a loose thread tight around her finger.
"I don't think it's a good idea," I said honestly. While my wolf was alight at the prospect of a day
or two alone with the sweet omega, my mind was still intact, and I knew better. But the more time I
spent with her, the more clearly I could imagine my mating bite on her pretty, little neck.
Hoping to ease her worry, I said, "The good news is we have food downstairs and plenty of
firewood."
She smiled, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "I guess it could be worse. We do have all the wine
after all," she snorted, trying to sound as if she didn't mind, but I could scent her distress. She was
worried.
"And don't forget the turnips," I added, pleased when her face relaxed, and her smile brightened.
"And the turnips too." She laughed, flirty and sweet. It was a sound I had never heard her make for
any other wolf before, and I was desperate to hear it again.
Her scent calmed a bit as she fidgeted with the corner of the blanket, and I felt pressed to say
something to end the growing silence. "I'll bring you something to eat. Then I'll stay in one of the other
bedrooms so you can be comfortable."
"No." She jerked forward as if she wanted to grab me. "Don't leave me all alone."
I rubbed my palms together, squeezing, not sure how to handle this. "Mina," I gritted my teeth, "I'm
sure Captain Ari would not be pleased to know we were alone. He'd have my head if he knew we
slept in the same room."
"Captain Ari?" Her brows twisted with confusion. "Why would Captain Ari care?" Her eyes
narrowed. "Has he said something to you about me?"
A bit of hope bloomed in my chest, but I tried to control my expression. "Is he not pursuing you?"
Mina crossed her arms, her mouth tight. Apparently, there was a bit of fire in her. "Captain Ari
has not placed a claim on me. And even if he had, no one but my mate gets a say in what I can and
cannot do. And right now, I don't have a mate," she tapped just beneath her ear, "but if you insist on
leaving me in a broken house, scared and alone, all in an attempt not to offend an alpha that has
nothing to do with me, then I guess there's nothing I can do about that."
My wolf salivated at her tone. The urge to turn her over and spank her ass red made my palms
tingle and my cock heavy. I liked her worked-up.
I bowed my head in a formal manner. "Understood, Omega Mina." I couldn't help but smile at her
angry pout.
Her eyes widened a bit at my expression, and her shoulders slumped. "I apologize." She sighed
hard, her anger quickly fading. "It's not easy being my age and unmated. I'm old enough to know my
own mind, but my status means that I don't always have the right to make my own choices."
"I didn't mean to assume." I bowed my head again to express my sincerity. "But if you don't mind
me saying, Captain Ari is an honorable and proud wolf. Any omega that he takes as a mate will be
very lucky." She nodded as if she had heard that a hundred times. "I'm just really fucking happy it
won't be you."
My words caught her off guard, and she froze for a moment. I looked deep into her sparkling
brown eyes, hoping she could feel how much I wanted her. This evening was a gift from the Moon,
and I wasn't going to waste it. If Mina had no interest in Ari, then I would take my chance.
Shying away, Mina mumbled softly.
I stepped a little closer. "What?"
"I got you something."
Shock, hope, and fear beat hard in my chest. I thought of the bracelet Rowan got Lily, and I
wondered if this was a gift from Mina's heart or something less personal.
Moving slowly, I sat at the edge of the bed, careful to keep a respectable distance between us. I
couldn't take my eyes off her blushed cheeks or her bottom lip captured between her teeth.
"What did you get me?" I asked. My voice was deep, almost too deep, and she swallowed hard at
the sound.
Slipping off the blanket, then her coat, Mina pushed her hand into the inside pocket. She pulled out
a small rectangular box with a thin red ribbon wrapped around it. Leaning forward a bit, she set it just
in front of me.
It wasn't for Ari.
I picked it up as if it were a precious gem. Pulling at one end of the ribbon, I slipped it off, then
lifted the lid. A small square of fabric lay at the bottom. It was embroidered with a dark red rose and
bright green leaves. The intense scent of vanilla and lavender hit me hard, filling my lungs and
swirling in my head.
"I put a drop of my blood in the red thread," Mina whispered, her cheeks and neck a fierce
crimson.
"It's so potent," I growled, picking up the small square of fabric and sniffing it again.
"I, um…" Her eyes were locked firmly on her hands. "I pricked my finger during my last heat so it
would smell the best for you."
My beast roared, and I reacted without any thought. Wrapping my hand tight around her soft throat,
I pulled her to me, crashing my mouth to hers. I wanted to devour her. Claim her. Mark her.
Mina swallowed, the movement of her throat tight against my palm. Slowly, my grip on her neck
fell away as I kissed her soft and slow. Her breath came out in little pants, her inexperience clear in
the trembling hands resting on my shoulders.
I needed to stop, but her intoxicating scent and delicate whimpers were fucking with my head. Her
fingers curled slightly into my skin, and she moaned. My wolf reared his ugly head, ready to take what
was mine.
Using every ounce of strength I had in my body, I broke the kiss, forcing myself away from the
bed. Rejection clouded her pretty face, her eyes glassy.
"I apologize," I said, trying to collect myself. I stared at her wet puffy lips, and pride swelled in
my chest at making them that way. "I shouldn't have touched you without permission. I should have
asked…." I paused.
"Asked my father for permission to pursue me?" She finished my thought for me. A sad smile
pulled at her lips.
I instantly felt horrible for reminding her of his death. It must be hell to be an omega without an
alpha to guide her through picking a mate.
"I should probably speak with your brother." I crossed my arms to keep my hands from finding
their way back to her long tresses. Her hair was far softer than I had ever imagined, and the way it
smelled…I pushed out a long sigh, trying to ignore the throb at the base of my engorged cock.
"Nix only just turned of age," she said flatly. "He still relies on our mother to wake him in the
mornings so he can make it to his patrols on time." Her voice dropped to a whisper, "But if you wish
to speak to someone about placing a proper claim on me, you could always talk to my mother."
I snorted at the thought. Mina glared, and I cleared my throat roughly, trying to pick my next words
carefully. The last thing I wanted was to offend her. "With your mother being an omega, it could look
to some as if I forced her permission."
"But you thought Ari asked my mother." Mina tipped her head up at my tone; her brows pulled
together in vexation. "Or did you think he just decided to take me without any respect for tradition?"
I wasn't sure if she was being serious or not. She knew the rules of romantic engagement. "Ari is
high enough that he doesn't have to ask your mother." My words reminded me just how lowly I was in
comparison. "Mina, you know that I don't have the standing Ari does. You would probably do better
—"
"I have no interest in Ari," she said, her chin jutting out slightly. "I," her pulse thumped wildly in
her throat as she tried to keep her fierce expression in place, "I want you."
Desire and elation washed over me. "Well then," I puffed out my chest, "I look forward to
speaking with your mother."
Surprise lifted her brows, and it took a moment before she finally blinked, speaking softly, "That
would be lovely."
The wind howled, and so did my wolf.
I prayed the storm would let up soon. I wasn't sure how much longer I could control myself
around her. The urge to claim Mina was so overpowering, and I wanted to let it consume me…so that
I could consume her.
My sweet omega.
Mine.
FIVE
THE GUEST BEDROOM

Mina

WHAT WAS I DOING ? And where did my sudden confidence come from?
Even as I asked Ivor to stay with me, my wolf was shocked into silence. I was throwing away my
reputation, but I wasn't even sure if I cared anymore.
My mother would be horrified, but my intense need to be mated and bred had reached a
crescendo. At this point, I would strip down in the town square and let Ivor take me for all to see if it
meant I didn't have to survive another year alone. My wolf was sick of waiting.
And Ivor was mine.
I knew it from the first moment I saw him.
"I'll be right back," Ivor said, pausing in the doorway. He was massive, the top of his head grazing
the doorframe. "I'm just going to check the other rooms for firewood."
I nodded, not taking my eyes off the door until it clicked firmly behind him. I took a calming
breath, smoothing my hands through my hair, thankful for the chance to collect myself. I was still
flustered by his unbelievable kiss. It wasn't my first, but it was definitely the best.
Rocking forward a bit, I glanced out the window. It was already getting dark, the storm making the
building creak and groan. I was fairly toasty wrapped up in the thick blanket, but I still shivered at the
achy sounds the old lodge made.
Feeling a little restless, I slipped off the bed, and the cold immediately made my knees shake. I
cursed myself for leaving my leggings in the kitchen. Running my fingertips over the bandage on my
leg, I smiled, and my heart fluttered a little harder at the memory of Ivor's warm hands as he tended to
me.
Rushing to the other side of the room, I lit the only lantern that held any oil, then set about looking
for more blankets. At the bottom of the wardrobe, I found a few extra throws and some small pillows,
and the cedar chest held a very heavy and enormous quilt. I groaned as I hauled it toward the bed, half
of it trailing across the floor.
The pillows were all wildly different shapes and colors, but they were clearly omega-made. They
were puffy with careful stitching and very little detail, perfect for lining a nest without any
uncomfortable beads or zippers. Once the pillows were in place, I spread out the blankets, patting
and forming a decent shape. The fabric was soft and pleasant, but they smelled of mothballs and dust.
I rubbed the edge of the quilt against my throat, trying to fix the scent.
"Are you okay?" Ivor asked, stepping back into the room. He had a tray in one hand and a bundle
of small logs under his arm. A small knitted blanket was draped over his shoulder. I could tell from
here that it smelled infinitely better than the ones I was sitting on.
Noticing the snow clinging to the ends of his long hair, I asked, "Did you go downstairs?" I looked
him over for any signs of cuts or injury. It might have been stupid of me to think such a strong alpha
could get hurt so easily, but there was a lot of broken glass down there, and Ivor was barefoot.
Rising onto my knees, I looked down at his feet. He didn’t have any cuts or scratches. They
looked perfectly fine….and big. Everything about him was big.
"You need to eat," he said simply. He eyed the bed, concern pulling his brows together. "Are you
sure you're okay?" he asked again.
"Yes." I smiled. "Why do you keep asking?" I pulled the knit blanket off his shoulder, careful not
to hit the tray still perched in his hand.
"You're building a nest," he said cautiously, setting the bundle of wood on the floor. "Omegas
make nests when they're distressed."
I pressed my lips together, trying to stifle a laugh. Ivor was an only child, and both his parents
were alphas. His experience with omegas was clearly limited. "We build nests for lots of reasons." I
brought the blanket up to my nose, and Ivor's rich scent washed over me. His warm aroma was earthy,
like toasted hazelwood and blazing embers. It made something pleasant twist deep inside me. I
inhaled again, wanting to chase the feeling.
"Where should I put the tray?" Ivor eyed the mound of pillows and blankets around me.
I patted a firm pillow on the corner, then smiled wide at what he brought me. There were dried
meats, an assortment of nuts and dried berries, a slice of honey cake, and one very out-of-place
turnip. I picked up the vegetable, smiling wide at the alpha.
"I wanted to make sure I got all your favorite foods." The tips of his white canines were slightly
pointed, making my tummy flutter. He placed a hand over his heart, then asked in a formal manner,
"May I come into your nest?"
My wolf purred, and I nodded. The bed dipped, and my skin tingled as the heat from his big body
warmed my side. He was so close, pulling the tray toward me. I couldn't help but stare at his profile.
His nose was long and angular—a bump in the center telling me he had broken it at some point. His
lips were full, and he had a faint scar on his cheekbone.
"How did you get this?" I asked, barely brushing my finger over the mark. The brief contact made
my whole body tingle, and I swore I saw goosebumps rise along his arms.
"Bumblebees," he said, popping a dried cherry into his mouth.
"You have to tell me how." I leaned in, needing to hear how a tiny bug could leave such a mark.
"I was a pup," he sighed sweetly, "only three or four and was running from a bumblebee. I
smacked right into a low-hanging branch." He smiled sheepishly at the memory, and I wanted nothing
more than for him to kiss me again. "I tell everyone it was from a fight, though. A scar from a fist is
much more respectable than barreling head-first into a tree."
I chuckled, imagining a young Ivor running full speed through the forest. "Your secret is safe with
me," I said, scooping up a few cherries. The tart flavor made my lips purse.
"You don't like them?"
"I prefer them fresh." I chewed, scrunching up my nose at the sharp taste.
His eyes lingered on my mouth, his lips parting as he watched me eat. Feeling a little self-
conscious, I licked my lips, hoping I wasn't being messy. He instantly stood, making the dishes on the
tray clink.
"What's wrong?" I asked, worried I had done something that displeased him.
"You must be freezing." His tone was as stiff as his posture. He picked up the bundle of wood off
the floor and walked quickly across the room to the fireplace. My wolf whimpered, hating the sudden
change in his demeanor.
I ate, not caring what, while I watched him work. Ivor's biceps bulged, and his abs flexed as he
arranged the wood just so. My body felt as if it was buzzing just watching him move. It made me
squirm, my belly growing warm. Ivor's hair swung into his eyes, brushing the bump on his nose.
That long nose…I wondered what it might feel like brushing up against my clit.
"Mina?"
I jerked, letting out a horrible squeak at the sound of my name. Blushing as if caught doing
something naughty, I struggled to speak. "Y-yes?" My voice was much breathier than it should have
been for someone holding a chunk of dried deer meat in her fist.
"The matches." He pointed to the table next to the bed. I grabbed the small box and tossed them to
him before burrowing back into the thick blankets. He was right. It was freezing.
Ivor sparked a fire, poking and coaxing it until it blazed properly. But I still shivered, the small
fire not doing much to warm the room just yet.
"I'll sleep on the floor," he said, reaching for a small pillow at the end of the bed. I instantly bared
my teeth and growled, my wolf not happy the alpha would so casually ruin my nest. He froze, his hand
hovering just over the pillow.
"Not that one," I said, trying to calm my overwhelming sense of panic.
He took a careful step back, and my distress grew. The indescribable need to have him closer
made my skin itch. "Please." I took a slow breath, trying to push down the urge to cry. "I know it's not
appropriate, but can you sleep next to me? In my nest?" I shivered, my nose and toes like ice.
He squeezed his fists tight, his eyes sweeping around the room. I understood his apprehension.
Unmated alphas and omegas were kept apart for a reason, but I was so cold, and his scent felt so right
soaked into the blankets around me.
"Mina." His voice was gruff. "I can't—"
"Please, alpha," I whispered once more. I knew what I was asking for was dangerous. Ivor could
fall to his baser instincts and possibly try to take me, but I trusted him. My wolf trusted him. He
wouldn't hurt me.
Finally, Ivor let out a long sigh and nodded. He set the tray on the side table and crawled in next
to me. I tucked the blanket tightly around my shoulders, lying down beside him. I faced the window,
careful not to touch the alpha, even though I desperately wanted to. The heat from his big body
warmed my back, and I hummed.
The wind howled and beat at the windowpane, the sound making my teeth chatter. Ivor let out a
soft groan, then wrapped his big arm around my middle, pulling my back flush with his chest. "You're
going to freeze," he whispered in my ear, curling himself around me and bending my legs up with his.
I wiggled back a bit, but a firm hand gripped my hip, stopping me.
"Don't," he commanded.
My face burned as I realized his member was pressed hard against my bottom. I should have
moved away, but I didn't want to. In fact, I wanted to be even closer. I wanted to rip the blanket off,
crawl into his lap, lick every inch of his perfect body, then demand he do the same to me.
I squeezed my eyes shut, realizing it only took one simple storm to turn me into a full-on tramp.
Ivor's warm scent filled my nest, and I slowly relaxed against him.
Before I knew it, I fell asleep.

A CRACK of thunder jerked me awake.

I yipped, confused and scared.
Where was I?
"It's okay," Ivor's deep voice whispered in my ear. His breath fanned against the back of my neck.
Goosebumps flashed, and I suddenly realized the blanket that had separated us was gone. My thin
dress was the only barrier between me and his tempting abs. "It's just thundersnow. It'll pass soon."
"I hate these kinds of storms." My voice cracked, and I flinched hard as the sky boomed again.
"It's okay, omega." His deep tone sent heat spooling down my body. He turned me around,
molding me to his side and cradling my face to rest against his firm pec. "I'm right here."
I should have pushed him away, but I couldn't. I was so stupid and reckless, and I wasn't ashamed
to want more. My wolf needed him. I needed him.
Feeling a little brave, I brushed my fingertips over his chest, caressing the groves and dips of his
pressed muscles. A soft growl pushed from his throat, and fire bloomed deep in the pit of my belly.
"Mina," he growled my name in the dark. "What are you doing?"
"Nothing," I whispered, continuing down his stomach and past the soft skin beneath his belly
button. A trail of coarse blond hair led me to his belt buckle. His abs tightened, and he held his
breath, waiting for what I'd do next. I swallowed hard, my clit pulsing in time with my heart. Was I
really doing this? Was I this kind of omega?
Fuck it.
I was done being coy.
I flattened my hand over his flat stomach, then pushed the tips of my fingers just inside his
waistband. The sky flashed, and the air crackled once again. I gasped, the sound more sultry than I
intended. In one fierce movement, Ivor rolled me onto my back and pinned my hands over my head.
"Is this what you want?" he snarled, his grip on my wrists tightening. "Do you want me to hurt
you? Take you? Fuck you?" He sounded so angry, but it only turned me on more.
Slick gathered between my thighs, his masculine scent making me dizzy and breathless. Unable to
find my words, I tried to shake my head, but the urge to nod won me over, resulting in an awkward
circular motion.
His dark eyes narrowed, and his grip tightened on my wrists. "Answer me," he snarled.
"A-alpha," I gasped, tipping my head up to expose the long column of my throat—silently begging
him to scent me.
His eyes dropped to my neck, and he licked his lips. But he didn't move to touch me. He just
stared, his eyes phasing between soft brown and violent crimson. He was clearly fighting his beast
for control.
And it enraged me.
Ivor was mine. He wanted me, and I wanted him. We were meant to be, and my wolf wouldn't rest
until we were bound and mated. Alpha's were considered by most to be the more possessive and
unhinged wolves, but it was a determined omega that was the true beast.
"Fuck, you look so soft," he said, staring at my neck as if in a trance.
"I am soft," I whispered, looking deep into his eyes. Tempting him. "Feel me."
His fangs pushed into sharp points, and my wolf purred. A good omega would have screamed and
cried, begging him to stop to preserve my honor, but instead, I lifted my hips, wanting to feel his thick
member against my core.
Moving slowly, Ivor leaned down, running his nose over the edge of my jaw.
Brushing his lips over my chin.
Bumping his nose gently against mine.
Then he kissed me.
It was so soft and sweet, but his grip on my wrists was almost painfully tight. It was as if he
teetered on that delicate edge of man and beast, and I wanted nothing more than for his wolf to push
him over the edge, forcing him to stake his claim.
"Open for me, omega," he growled against my mouth.
I parted my lips, and his warm tongue slipped inside. His kiss was otherworldly. It felt as if he
was worshiping me, owning me, consuming me.
Gripping my chin, he tilted my head, allowing him deeper entry. The tip of my tongue grazed his
pointed fang, and he growled deep into my mouth. The sound was quickly followed by his hand
roaming the length of my body. From my knee, up the side of my thigh, over my hip, then he squeezed
my breast.
I had been kissed before. I had even been fondled a few times by a charming beta behind the
temple rectory, but the way Ivor plucked at my nipple through my dress was entirely new. A jolt of
electricity shot through me with each pinch, racing straight to my engorged clit. Slick soaked my
panties as I writhed and moaned into his mouth, then he pulled back.
Perched above me, Ivor looked downright feral. His long hair hung into his red glowing eyes, and
a flash of lightning illuminated his pointed teeth.
He growled my name, his wolf distorting his voice. Instead of shrinking away and begging to be
freed, I arched my back, wanting him closer.
"Please," I begged, sawing my legs on the bed. "Alpha, please."
His features darkened as he released my breast, dragging his lust-filled gaze down my body.
Squeezing my wrists tight with one hand, he lifted the hem of my dress up to expose my panties, then
my stomach. Moving so slowly it hurt, he brushed his knuckles over the center of my wet
undergarments. But just as quickly, his hand stilled, and the red glow in his eyes faded.
"Tell me to leave," he snarled, his angry expression catching me off guard. "Tell me to fucking
leave now."
I opened my mouth to beg him to stay, but he pressed the pad of his thumb to my clit, and all
thought fell from my head. I moaned wildly, tipping my head back. "Oh my," I gasped, my nipples so
hard the fabric of my dress hurt.
"Fuck, Mina." He jerked my dress over my breasts, then sucked a nipple deep into his mouth. He
dragged his tongue over one stiff peak, then the other, while he teased the edge of my panties. He
traced the fabric, occasionally smoothing his fingers over the material to tease my clit. He was
driving me mad.
My growing desire edged almost painful as he kept playing with my sex. I finally jerked my
hands-free and gripped his hair in both my fists. I forced his mouth to mine, kissing him hard.
Done teasing me, he shoved my panties to the side and plunged two long, thick fingers deep inside
me. The burn was almost too much to bear, and I immediately tensed. His slick fingers slowly
withdrew, followed by a smooth, deep push back inside me. He stretched me and filled me, repeating
the motion over and over.
"Fuck, you're tight," he growled in the dark, his soft lips kissing my jaw and neck. The burn fell
away, and I relaxed into the blankets, reveling in the way his hot flesh pressed against my exposed
stomach. He was so warm and soft—velvety skin over intimidating muscle.
Shifting slightly, Ivor pushed his fingers even deeper, working them to his knuckle. He wrapped
an arm under my middle and forced me to arch my back. Then he curled his fingers, and I gasped
loudly—shocked at being touched in such a way.
"I-Ivor!" I gasped, gripping his shoulders tight.
"You like that, little omega?" He nipped at my chin, wiggling his wicked fingers back and forth.
"You like me fucking you knuckle deep?"
I nodded, embarrassed by his dirty words but too turned on to care. "Yuh-yes."
"I bet this tight little pussy will grip my cock so well. Lift those hips."
I rolled my hips with his movements, chasing that glorious, twisting high. I had pleasured myself
many times during my heats, but it felt nothing like this. Touching myself was sweet and satisfying.
This was a building electricity that crackled the air and stole my breath.
I pushed my nails into his skin, reveling in the pleasure his powerful hands took from me.
"Come for me, Mina," he growled. "Let me see those big tits bounce while you come."
I dug my heels into the mattress, thrusting my hips up to get him as deep as possible, then I broke
apart into a million pieces. Tipping my head back, I screamed out my climax, gasping for air and
shaking fiercely. My head spun, and stars consumed my vision.
A deep, guttural roar filled the room as Ivor's fingers kept fucking into me, letting me feel every
drop of pleasure possible.
Slowly, my body eased, and the room came back into focus. Ivor shifted, quickly pulling his wet
fingers out of me. His belt jingled, and he grunted hard as his fist moved up and down in a blur. I
wanted so badly to look down and see his member, but before I could lift up, Ivor grunted hard as
warm liquid splashed all over my breasts and belly, down to my thighs.
The smell of his climax made my mouth water, and I whined, wanting so badly to taste him but too
exhausted to move.
"My sweet omega," he panted, staring at the mess he made. Slowly, he pushed his hand through the
warm cum on my stomach. He spread it over my breasts, circling each nipple, then down into the
folds of my sex. He pushed some of it inside me, making my pussy spasm. I was so sensitive it almost
hurt.
"Ivor," I whined, not sure what I needed from him.
He shushed me, then he purred. No one had ever purred for me before.
The vibrations pushed me deep into the mattress. I was completely limp, powerless, as he
continued to rub his seed all over my stomach, sides, and the inside of my thighs.
Once he was done, he carefully pulled me to him, resting my head on his big muscular chest.
"Sleep, my omega," he whispered. "Sleep."
SIX
THE NEXT MORNING

Ivor

THE STORM CONTINUED to rage all night and into the morning. Even as the sun rose, the sky remained a
dark gray, keeping the bedroom dim and cozy—only the crackling fire provided any real light.
Mina slept peacefully curled against my side. Her dress was still around her middle, and I cursed
myself for not ripping her undergarments clean off her sweet body last night. I wanted to see the
delicate curve of her sweet cunt again.
She grumbled in her sleep, rubbing her face over my chest. Her lips were puckered, and her
brows pulled together slightly. Whatever she was dreaming about, she didn't seem happy.
Was she dreaming about last night? Was she upset about it?
Slipping my hand into my pocket, I pulled out the small embroidered fabric Mina had gifted me.
The color of the rose and its leaves were so vibrant. I never really cared for flowers before, but
looking at Mina's perfect design, I wondered how I didn't realize how lovely they were.
Guilt built in my chest as I thought of how I had acted last night.
The way I touched and defiled Mina.
I acted like a rogue, ruining an honorable omega that deserved to be cherished and courted. As
shameful as it was, I let my instincts take over. My beast needed to feel her, fuck her, make every inch
of her perfect body smell like me. The urge to imprint on her was so intense I almost lost myself
completely and rutted her right into the sheets.
"What's wrong?" Mina asked, her voice rough with sleep.
"Nothing." I forced a smile, noticing how flushed she was.
She pressed the lines between my eyes. "You're frowning."
"You were frowning first." She tilted her head in confusion. "In your sleep. Were you having a bad
dream?"
Not answering me, Mina turned to look out the window behind her. The snow continued to fall,
slapping the windowpane hard. "Do you think my mom is okay?" She looked at me with big, glassy
eyes.
"I'm sure of it." I pulled her a little closer. Her curves fit so perfectly against me. So small and
soft.
"But you said Nix took Summer home. What if he got stuck and—"
"Mina," I said firmly, gripping her chin and forcing her to look at me. "You will not fuss about
this. Nix would never leave your mother to fend for herself. I've grown to know him very well in the
last year, and he's incredibly protective of you two."
She nodded, lowering her lashes to hide the tears threatening to fall.
I kissed her temple, wanting more than anything to kiss her pink lips, but she was too distressed
right now. "If I thought for one moment your mother was truly alone, I'd fight that storm all the way to
your front door to check on her."
Mina glanced up at me, smiling through watery eyes. "Thank you. I know she's okay," she sighed
hard, "I just worry."
"Stay in bed." I pushed my nose into her hair, pulling in her intensely sweet scent. Her vanilla
aroma was even stronger than last night. So sweet it made my teeth hurt. "I'll bring you something to
eat."
"Actually, I'd like to go downstairs." She pulled away from me, sitting up. Her dark hair was
messy, with thick waves framing her face and cascading down her back. She looked wild and flushed.
I loved it.
"I didn't get a good look last night," she said, "and I'd like to see how bad the damage is."
I shook my head. "That's not a good idea. There's glass everywhere, and—"
"The second you go downstairs, I'm just going to follow you." She tipped her chin up,
determination clear in her gorgeous brown eyes.
I was speechless for a moment. The tiny omega had more fire than I expected, and it was
downright sexy. I licked my lips and smoothed my hand down the length of her back. "Mina," I said
softly, ready to fight the little beast if needed. "You will stay here, and—"
"No, sir," she said so sweetly, despite the disobedience of her words. "Our pack has worked
tirelessly to get ready for the festival. I understand it won't be happening today or even this week if
things are really bad, but once the storm clears, we will celebrate. I want to save what I can of our
pack's offerings. All our hard work is going to blow away…and I don't…" She paused. Her chin
quivered, and she pulled in a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. "It's important to me."
Looking down at her tiny form, I took in her exposed thighs and bare feet. "You are in a short, thin
dress. You will freeze."
Mina crossed her arms, but her energy wasn't angry. She still looked soft and sweet, just resolved,
like there was nothing I could say to sway her. I suppressed the urge to smile, wondering just how
many fights she was able to win with her quiet determination.
"You will sit on the staircase and not move an inch from where I place you." I looked deep into
her eyes, pleased when they sparkled back at me.
"Yes, alpha." She smiled, biting that plump bottom lip. It took everything in me not to suck it out of
her mouth.

THE MAIN FLOOR of the lodge was barely recognizable. Snow was piled up high next to the
broken window, swirling across the room all the way to the front door. A heavy branch still hung
inside the room but was now joined by two more, knocking out almost every square of glass. Given
how much of the old oak tree now sat inside the lodge, I wondered if we'd be able to salvage any of
it.
The festive evergreen in the center of the room was on its side, and all the ivy and ribbons that
decorated the archways and tables were either on the floor or hanging to the walls by tattered threads.
A soft whimper left Mina's throat as she looked over the mess. I wasn't sure what to say to make
her feel better. Given how much damage the rest of the pack was probably dealing with, this really
didn't matter, but I didn't say that out loud. She was scared for her mother and needed a distraction.
And I was determined to gather every broken decoration and stray bit of thread in the damn place if it
made her feel better.
"What do you want me to get?" I asked, pulling the blanket tight around her shoulders. She tried
hard to hide a shiver as I tucked it firmly around her bare feet. I hated that she was down here. She
should be in her nest.
"Where are all the trinkets that were on the tree?" She scanned the floor.
I spotted a few near the fireplace and a couple more stuck under the piano. The panel had been
left up, leaving a thick layer of ice and snow all over the black and white keys.
Grabbing a tattered basket from under the table, I set to work collecting everything Mina pointed
out. The snow continued to drift in through the window as I moved about, grabbing not just the intact
ornaments but several broken ones as well.
Once the basket was brimming, I carried Mina back upstairs, then set about getting her some
breakfast.
Most of the food was covered in frost, but the dried meats were still good, as were the nuts and
seeds. I scanned the room once more before turning to head back upstairs. Something shimmered near
the fireplace, and I scooped up the dirty bit of silk. My heart dropped as I stared at it. Mina was sure
to be upset at the sight of her ruined tapestry.
Mina sat in the center of her nest, fixing and cleaning every trinket in the basket. The quilt was
covered in wet, twisted ribbons that, at one point, were shaped like different animals. Now they just
looked like dirty pieces of string.
"What's that?" she asked, looking at the fabric tucked under my arm. Her cheeks were still flushed
red, the blush from this morning seeming to worsen. Did she have a fever?
"Your tapestry," I grimaced and set the tray of food on the side table. Then I spread the once
beautiful decoration out for her to see. The tapestry was covered in soot, the threads frayed, and most
of the beads gone.
Mina held it up and let out a resigned sigh. "Well, it's still not the worst thing I ever made." She
laughed, turning her attention back to the ornaments in her hands.
She was endlessly surprising.
"I thought you'd be upset."
"This upsets me." She motioned to the figures laid out in front of her. "The pups at the schoolhouse
worked so hard on them."
The sad look in her eyes—as she lovingly caressed a misshapen star—made me feel like shit. She
deserved so much better than me. She deserved someone of high standing—an alpha that could treat
her well and love her right. She deserved someone like Ari.
"What's wrong?" Mina asked. "And don't say 'nothing'." She quickly added. "You woke up sad,
and now you look sad again. Even your scent is sad."
I swallowed hard. I wasn't one to speak openly about feelings, but there was something about
Mina that made me want to talk—expose parts of myself I had never shared with anyone before.
"Why do you want me?" I asked.
Her nose scrunched in confusion.
"You could mate Ari and have the prestige of being bound to someone of high standing. Why settle
for a grunt like me?" Mina's big brown eyes searched my face, and I hated how vulnerable I felt
"Why pick me?" she whispered, twisting a loose thread repeatedly around her finger. "I'm not
anything special."
"Yes, you are," I said firmly, suddenly enraged at her assessment of herself. I sat next to her, not
even bothering to ask if I could enter her nest. Her expression tightened as I knocked a few pillows
off the edge of the bed, but she didn't object. I pulled her to me, settling her in my lap. She shivered
slightly, and her scent bloomed.
"You are very sweet," she said. "But that doesn't change the fact that I'm twenty-five and unmated.
If I'm so wonderful, how come no one has ever pursued me?"
"Listen to me," I growled, making my voice dangerously low. Her eyes widened at my tone, but
she didn't shy away. "You are fucking perfect. You are caring and giving and a little mouthy. Which for
some reason my wolf very much likes." She giggled, leaning a little closer. "You have the unfortunate
situation of being born to a very respected alpha. And with his passing, no one wants to step in for
fear of upsetting the rest of the pack."
She leaned back, her brow furrowing. "Why would that upset the pack?"
"Until recently, Nix was underage, which meant anyone interested in you had to go through your
mother. As an omega, she would be powerless to refuse any alpha. Given who your father was, it
would look dishonorable for just anyone to approach her."
Her eyes widened as if this was new and foreign information.
"How do you not know the guidelines of courting?" I asked.
She snorted, giving me a pointed look. "Is there a book I can read, or are these unspoken rules that
alphas just know?"
I nodded, understanding her point.
She wiggled a little closer, placing her hand on my forearm, "But you aren't worried about
following the rules anymore? I mean…after last night…what are you…are we…" She paused,
struggling to finish her thought.
"If you will have me. If you will let me keep you. You are mine," I growled, loving the shiver that
worked through her tempting body. "But as far as the rules go, we're trapped here." I motioned out the
window at the raging storm. "This wasn't planned. I doubt anyone will banish me for falling victim to
the charms of the most beautiful omega in the whole village." I smiled, trying to make light of our
situation. But the truth was I had no idea what the consequences would be. Ari might not have staked
a proper claim on Mina, but his interest was clear.
She ducked her head. "You think I'm beautiful?" she whispered, her scent edging even sweeter. It
was so strong. It made me dizzy.
I leaned in, hovering my lips just over hers, then I growled, "Very."
She closed the space between us, pressing her soft lips to mine. I let her have a bit of control,
touching me however she wanted. She kissed me softly, then brushed her cheeks over mine. A throaty
purr slipped from her chest as she nuzzled and caressed my face. I didn't know much about omegas,
but this I knew. She was staking her claim. She was coating me in her delicious scent to ward off
others, and it had my heart racing.
Mina brought her lips back to mine, pushing her tongue out and licking my bottom lip. I opened for
her. The moment her sweet tongue slipped into my mouth, I lost it. Fisting a handful of her hair, I
pulled at the roots while pressing her hard against my chest. She gasped and moaned, gripping my
shoulders hard.
"I'm going to take you," I growled in warning. "You are mine."
She nodded, panting while she continued to kiss me—her movements becoming desperate and
sloppy. She was falling apart in my arms, and I fucking loved it.
A soft gasp left her lips as she tried to deepen the kiss. Her desire was so strong, her scent
flooding the entire room. Realization slammed into me as my wolf inched forward, pushing me into a
frenzy of possessive lust. Mina was slipping into her heat.
"Ivor," Mina whispered, her voice shaky with need. "Please, alpha. Touch me."
