This article from Arnesia Young shows us an African gray parrot called Alex who was the colleague and test subject of Dr. Irene
Pepperberg whose study results completely changed the idea that birds were not apparently considered intelligent animals. Alex is
considered a unique parrot because he acquired a variety of cognitive skills that generally thought beyond animal reasoning through
several cognition exercises.

According to Arnesia, Alex acquired his cognitive abilities from Dr. Pepperberg, who began training him using a method she called the
model / rival technique. This technique consisted of Alex first observing two of his coaches interacting and understanding the interactive
process. In this way, they were able to facilitate two-way communication with him. After that, he was trained with many cognition exercises
from his coach, with which Alex achieve to develop cognitive skills.

The article also explained the variety of cognitive skills Alex could learn and develop in its thirty years of training with Dr. Irene Pepperberg
such as first recognizing and categorizing colors, objects, materials, and actions, second having a vocabulary of more than 100 words,
third knowing at least 50 individual objects, and fourth counting quantities of up to 6 and last the parrot was even reported to have an
understanding of the concept of zero.

Young concludes by quoting with words that Alex said to Dr. Pepperberg the night before died “You be good, see you tomorrow. I love
you.” After its died thanks to the research Pepperberg completed with him, Alex achieved to become a legacy because demonstrated that
bird brains are more complex than originally thought and they could develop cognitive skills, which encouraged research in other birds.
Additionally, the technique used in the research has also been shown to be effective in teaching children with learning disabilities.

My life in 2175

I slowly open my eyes, I can hear the passive sound of the sea close and perceive the pleasant smell of the sea, without alarms with irritating
sounds, having sweet breakfasts every day. I have been here in my beach house for 1 year for vacation. I am 180 years old and more than
100 years of work. During all this time, I have lived many awesome experiences in different aspects, so I consider that I have had a good life,
because I have a very large family, I managed to study many careers and I have two beautiful houses.

On the family side, I have a large and united family with whom I have traveled a lot. To name a few, a husband whom I have been married for
over 100 years, two children, five grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and one adorable three-year-old great-great-grandson.

On the professional side, I have studied several careers. I studied software engineering, mechatronics and I have a master's degree in
artificial intelligence. Thanks to this I have been working as a senior software developer and I have also belonged to a NASA research group.

I have two beautiful houses where I live and spend my vacations with my family, a house in Europe and a beach house on an island in
Mexico. My workplaces were always varied and often so far, but since teleportation became a reality, distance was not a problem.

In conclusion, my life until now has been like a long roller coaster full of exciting moments. Even though I feel a bit tired now, I have achieved
many things in different aspects of my life such as family, professional and personal aspects and I still look young as if I was 30, so I am very
grateful to the life for it.

Mandatory community service program

Currently, most students spend their time using their cell phones, which is clearly ending face-to-face interaction with other people. In the reality that
we currently live in, it is of vital importance for students to do these community service activities, because it has personal benefits such as
contributing to their personal and physical development and also allows them to contribute to the improvement of society.

First, thinking that doing mandatory community service could provoke the student's studies to be affected and they could get stressed by that,
doesn't make sense because numerous studies in recent years have shown that volunteering is not only good for your mind and conscience; He is also
good for your body. The results show us that by focusing on other people's problems instead of their own, students reported a reduction in stress and
an overall improvement in mood and health, so volunteering is good for students.

Second, said that some students may not get social or personal benefits from the program and they may find the experience less satisfying because
they were required to do so and not because they wanted to it is ridiculous because it allows students to develop skills such as teamwork, decision-
making, solving problems, leadership skills by interacting with people from different environments.

Third, thinking that the pressure to comply with mandatory community service may become the students resentful and they may not want to
volunteer in the future. On the contrary, they will feel motivated to do more community service in the future, because it provides the opportunity also
to apply academic learning to real-life events, how are the cases of some careers such as psychology, education, or others related to dealing with
people, so it will result very useful in their professional future.

Finally, students will have many benefits in various aspects by doing community service, which will not only serve them currently, but also in their
professional life after finishing their studies. With this in mind, we should promote more community services for students, to contribute in some way
to promote more face-to-face interaction between students and achieve a better society.

MY FAVORITE CHILDHOOD MEMORY

One of the most beautiful and cherished memories that I remember of my childhood was
when I celebrated my birthday with my family in a beautiful park when I was 7 years old. I
consider this so special since I spent beautiful moments with my family. We started that day
riding horses with the help of my parents. Later we went to the pool and swam for two hours
with my sister. We spent funny moments playing with a ball throwing and catching the ball.
We ate Pollo a la Brasa, my favorite dish for the lunch. For the dinner, I had a really big and
colorful cake and I made a wish. After that, I received a beautiful present, it was a big doll
that by pressing a button on her chest she sang my favorite music. I strongly believe that it
was a memorable birthday because everything was perfect. Even though it was only a day,
this birthday and the memories I have about it, it will remain in my heart always for all my
life.
PARAGRAPH 2
AN ACHIEVEMENT I AM PROUD OF
One of the most events in my life that I am very proud of was when I passed the entrance exam to the San
Marcos University to study software engineering. I consider this so special since that day I achieved one of
my big dreams in my life, to enter the university. The path to achieving that dream was not easy, I studied a
lot until more than midnight many days during eight months. Before that day arrived, I took one entrance
exam, my first entrance exam, that I didn't pass, that moment was so sad, but I used that experience to
recover and continue preparing for the next exam. Thanks to my first exam I realized what i was doing badly
and change that. I continued preparing myself for three months more until my second exam arrived. The
previous hours to my exam, I felt so nervous but fortunately, I joined with my friends to sing motivation
songs, which made me feel less nervous until the exam started. During the exam, I felt very confident in
myself because I prepared myself a lot so I definitely would pass the entrance exam this time, and this
happened, I entered the university. I strongly believe that day was so memorable because I felt so happy
that day by achieving one of my big dreams. Even though it happened only one day, the process was really
amazing I passed a lot of happy and sad experiences before that day, but after all, I save all of these
experiences in my heart as an achievement that I am so proud of.
PARAGRAPH 3
A FUNNY THING THAT HAPPENED TO ME
One of the funniest moments I passed in my life happened when I forgot to bring with me my wallet
and I realized when I have already taken the car. I consider this moment so funny because I didn't
know what to say at that moment. That day I remember that had stayed up late the night before
doing my homework from the university, so that day I got up late and rushed out. After that, I took
the car so fast and I didn't realize that I didn't have my wallet with me. Fifteen minutes later, they
started to ask for the passage, I looked in my pockets and in my backpack but my wallet was not
there. Minutes later, I looked so embarrassing about it, but I had to say that I forgot my wallet. I said
those words, apologized, and go down from the car so fast at the next stop. Then I had to walk for
over thirty minutes to get to my home. I believe that it was an embarrassing moment but also funny
because It only happened to me that time and until now it hasn't been repeated. Even though that
happened to me only one time, I learned a lot about being more careful with my things, and now, I
always check if I have my wallet with me before leaving my home.
OUTCOME REFLECTION
In this course I have learned many things. I learned new vocabulary that I
can use in conversations or writings that I might need to redact in the future.
Additionally, I improved my writing and reading skills thanks to learning new
techniques to write essays and essay summary. This course has definitely
contributed to my strengthening in terms of reading and writing, which
allows me to improve my level of English.
