NTUNGAMO GIRLS HIGHSCHOOL

TERM 1 2024 ASSESSMENT

S.1 PHYSICS ASSESSMENT ITEMS

Time allowed: 1 hour and 45 minutes

Instruction: Attempt all questions

1. Alice bought a skirt and took to the tailor to have it exactly fitted around her waist. The tailor
measured the circumference of her neck and found that it was 15 cm. Without the tailor measuring
the circumference of her waist, the tailor concluded that it was 30cm (twice the circumference of
her neck) and assured her that the skirt will be modified to exactly fit her. Alice doubted and they
began arguing over it. To stop the endless argument, the tailor got a tape measure and also
measured Alice’s waist. They found out that it was 30.2 cm instead.
TASKS

a) Which physics term can be used to represent the 30 cm circumference? (01mark)

b) Which physics term can be used to represent the 30 .2 cm circumference? (01mark)

c) Which physics term can be used to describe the difference between the above two physics terms?

(01mark)

2. Three different groups of students were given research work on school project about finding the
length and the width of a standard football pitch. Since each group worked independently, they ended
up presenting their research findings in different units as shown in the table below.

GROUP A B C
Length 11000cm 120000mm 0.1km
Width 7000cm 80000mm 0.06km
TASKS

a) As the student coordinator in the school, help your friends from different groups to work together by
presenting their research findings in an internationally accepted standard unit of measurement of length
for all groups. (12marks)

b) Show how you can obtain the most accurate measurements of the football pitch from the results
obtained from all the above groups. (04marks)

c) State two reasons why you think the different groups obtained different values after measurement.

(02marks)

2. During the Covid-19 outbreak in 2019, the use of thermometers defined each and every place on
earth. From malls, arcades, supermarkets, airports, schools, offices industries among others,
temperature measurement was quite essential.

TASKS

a) Explain at least three reasons why temperature measurement is really that essential to a health
living. (03marks)

b) The lengths of a mercury column of a thermometer at ice point and steam point are 2 cm and 22 cm
respectively;

i) What is the reading of the thermometer when the mercury column is 9 cm long? (03marks)

ii) What will be the mercury length in the column at 60 oC (03marks)

c) List two properties of mercury that makes it suitable to be used as a thermometric liquid. (02 marks)

4. At your home kitchen, you have noticed that different kitchen appliances are designed differently
ranging from wine glasses, slivered flasks, saucepans, flying pans, spoons, and many others. Their design
and purpose sometimes is because of their conductivities. The table below shows different materials
and their conduction rates. Use it to answer tasks below it.

material wood Glass Stainless iron Brass aluminum copper

steel
Conductivity/rate 0.04 0.3 3.5 20 30 59 100
of conduction
TASKS:

a) Define conduction as applied to heat (01mark)

b) List any one kitchen appliance made of wood and give reason(s) why it is wooden?
(03marks)
c) Which material forms many cooking utensils and why? (02marks)

d) Why are there little or no cooking utensils made of copper regardless of its high conductivity?

(01 mark)

e) Give the reason why wood has a low conduction rate while copper has a high conduction rate

(01mark)
