1. What are the different type of lathe machine and their function

Speed Lathe Machine: A high-speed, hand-operated lathe machine, mainly used by

woodworkers. It provides a spindle speed from 1200 to 3600rpm. Due to their high-speed
spindle, speed lathe machines are used for woodturning, furniture making, metal polishing,
spinning, and centering.

Center Lathe or Engine Lathe Machine: The most popular type of lathe machine found in
most manufacturing workshops. It’s used for woodworking and metalworking. You can perform
various machining operations on this lathe machine such as turning, facing, grooving, knurling,
threading, drilling, boring, reaming, and many more.

Turret Lathe Machine: An advanced lathe machine used for mass production. It’s kind of an
upgraded version of an engine lathe, where the tailstock is replaced by a revolving hexagonal
turret. In this turret, you can set up multiple cutting tools (usually up to 6 tools), such as drilling,
countersinking, reaming, tapping, etc.

Toolroom Lathe Machine: These are precision lathes used for high accuracy work. They are
equipped with a wide range of accessories to increase their versatility and accuracy.

Bench Lathe Machine: A small lathe machine used for precision machining of small parts.

Automatic Lathe Machine: These are lathes where the workpiece is automatically fed and
removed without use of an operator. Cutting operations are automatically changed by a program.

Special Purpose Lathe Machine: These are designed for specific machining tasks that normal
lathes cannot perform.

CNC Lathe Machine: Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathes are rapidly replacing the
older production lathes due to their ease of setting, operation, repeatability and accuracy.

2. Give the different tools of lathe machine and label each tool

1. Turning tool: Used to remove material from the workpiece along its length to reduce its
diameter.
2. Chamfering tool: Used to create a beveled edge on the workpiece.

3. Thread cutting tool: Used to create threads on the workpiece.

4. Internal thread cutting tool: Used to create internal threads on the workpiece.

5. Facing tool: Used to create a flat surface on the end of the workpiece.
