What comes into your mind when you hear the word “operations”? Perhaps
you think about doctors in the hospitals and the operations they conduct to treat
patients. Or maybe you remember the news a year ago about several charitable
organizations initiating relief operations to help Taal Volcano eruption victims.
Operations are purposeful activities, done methodically as part of a work
plan, which are designed to achieve pre-decided objectives.
In business parlance, Operations refer to the part of a business organization
that is responsible for producing goods and/or services.

What is Operations Management?

It is the systematic direction, control, and evaluation of the entire range of
processes through which inputs are transformed into goods and services. It
consists of activities such as scheduling work, assigning resources (e.g. people,
equipment), managing inventories, assessing quality standards, etc. Operations
Management is the administration of business practices to create the highest level
of efficiency possible, maximizing the profit of an organization.
In your Supply Chain Management course last year, you have learned that
the SCM sequence begins with basic suppliers of raw materials and extends all the
way to the final customer. Operations and Supply chains are intrinsically linked,
and no business organization could exist without both. While Operations is mainly
concerned with making the products, Supply chain is primarily focused with
getting the raw materials to make the products and delivering the finished
products to the customers.
