Title: Catch-up Fridays: Enhancing Reading Skills, Critical Thinking, Analytical, and

Writing Skills among Learners of Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades

I. Introduction:
The alarming decline in reading skills and comprehension among Filipino youths in the recent
international rankings gives an idea for DepEd to roll out this “Catch-up Fridays”. So,
Pangasinan School of Arts and Trades decided to join this program in order to be monitored on
the performaces of all students of PSAT and primarily to help them enhance their reading skills
and comprehension.
II. The Need:
This program is created by DepEd to strengthen foundational, social, and other relevant skills
necessary to actualize the intent of the basic education curriculum. Also, according to Jimenez,
this program also prioritizes enhancing learner’s reading skills in order to develop the habit of
reading for all students, so they introduced the D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) practice as
they commenced with the Catch-up Fridays.
III. Background:
The D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) practice on Catch-up Fridays at Pangasinan School of
Arts and Trades promotes the need of enhancing reading skills and comprehension of every
learners and also to help them develop the habit of reading that will surely help them on their
lives.
In a global scenario, understanding of the issue of poor reading skills and comprehension, will
give us a very obvious hint to normalize having different activities or programs that will enhance
and improve our reading skills and comprehension.
IV. Project Descriptions:
Goal: Enhance the Reading Skills and Comprehension of every learners and strengthen the
foundational, social and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent of basic education
curriculum.
Objectives: This program seeks to achieve its general objective by focusing on its following
specific objectives;
- To enhance reading skills and comprehension of every learners.
- To help students to become more proficient writers, critical thinkers, readers, and
analysts.
V. Support or Budget:
The Catch-up Fridays (Drop Everything and Read) is successful and currently on-going because
of the teachers who provide reading sheets for students to read and also with the help of learners
who contributed books for other learners to read as well.
