Examining the author’s main argument and point. When studying historical sources you need
to be aware of documents’ sources and their authors’ point of view. Examining the author’s main
argument and point of view involves critically analyzing the central perspective or stance the
author presents in a piece of writing, considering the supporting evidence, tone, and underlying
assumptions.

Point of View – In the context of analyzing literature or any form of written expression, point of
view refers to the narrator’s position or the author’s stance in presenting a story or information. It
encompasses the narrator’s perspective, influencing how events or information are portrayed.
Argument: An argument in writing refers to the central claim or main idea that an author is
putting forth. It is the position the author is trying to persuade the audience to accept. Arguments
are supported by evidence, reasoning, and examples to convince readers of the validity of the
claim. Analyzing an argument involves assessing the strength of the evidence, the logic used, and
the overall effectiveness in presenting a compelling case.
In analyzing author’s argument and point of view, you should ask yourselves the following
questions:

1. Who is the speaker/source?

2. What is the occasion?
3. Who is the intended audience?
4. What is the purpose?
5. What is the subject?
6. What is the tone?
