User Experience Evaluation System 2 Overview

2 Overview
With the development of GSM technology and the accumulation of OM experience, the KPIs of network
equipment reach the OM requirements of operators. But increasingly more operators claim that user
complaints still exist even if the device KPIs on the network are good. The experience of these users
cannot be effectively improved through general optimization methods.
The user experience evaluation system categorizes the factors that affect user experience of mobile
terminals into five types, with each type defined different KPIs and call history record (CHR) information.
The information is provided to operators in the form of counters and CHR, thus facilitating viewing of
these counters. Through the related information, operators can understand the current network quality
and the factors that affect user experience in time. Together with Huawei network optimization tool and
professional services, this feature helps improve user satisfaction and improve network quality.
The user experience evaluation system has the following benefits:
 This feature facilitates the identification and location of network problems, thus improving the
efficiency of network OM and improving network quality.
 Through this feature, operators can learn user experience and evaluate network performance.
 Together with Huawei professional services, the network planning and optimization department can
adjust and optimize networks pointedly.
 Operators with strong technical strength can quickly and independently locate network problems of
terminal users, thus improving user satisfaction and reducing OM costs.
This document describes the principle and problem location of the user experience evaluation system.

User Experience Evaluation System 3 Principle

3 Principle
To enable the user experience evaluation system, you need to set CSRCDSW to ON(ON). The
parameter CSOUTMODE specifies the output CHRs of all the MSs. When the parameter is set to
SPECUSRM(Specified User Mode), the CHRs include the messages in SPECUSRM(Specified User
Mode) and COMMONUSRM(Common User Mode). If operators need professional services, they can
set CHRCOLLECTSWITCH to ON(On). In this manner, the BSC records all the CHRs of the entities
under the BSC, such as cells and BTSs.

The CHR in this document refers to the CHR in the CS domain.

This feature considers only the KPIs in idle mode of MS or the KPIs related to CS services. According
to the service procedures of MS, the factors that affect user experience are classified into the following
types:
 Problems occurring in idle mode of MS
 Problems occurring when MS accesses the network
 Problems occurring during an ongoing call
 Problems related to speech quality during an ongoing call
 Problems occurring during the transmission and reception of short messages (SMS)
With regard to these types of problems, counters and CHRs are defined on the BSC side. Operators
can learn the actual user experience by observing the related KPIs. According to these KPIs, network
optimization engineers can evaluate the network performance and then optimize the network of bad
quality, thus improving the QoS.
The analysis of the previous problems is based on the valid user complaints. The complaints are
collected from the MSs in normal service status, excluding the MSs whose service exceptions are
caused by arrears, roaming prohibition, and barred IMSI segments. Customer service personnel
register complete MS complaint information, as described as follows:
 User name
 MS number
 MS type
 Whether the problem occurs for the first time
 Problem occurrence time
 Problem occurrence place
 MS status
 Symptom

MS status refers to the environment and mobile status of an MS when the problem occurs.

The process of handling user complaints is as follows:

1. According to the service procedures of MS, engineers categorize user complaints into five types,
namely, idle mode, network access, ongoing call, speech quality, and SMS.
2. Based on the time and location provided in the complaint information, engineers select several cells
that probably provide services to users who report complaints. Then, the BSC searches for and
collect the CHRs and counters of these cells according to the IMSI. For the cells with access delay
and poor speech quality, the BSC collects the information about their neighboring cells.

GSM BSS
User Experience Evaluation System 3 Principle

The BSC uses either of the following methods to obtain the IMSI of an MS and retrieve the CHRs
according to the IMSI:
 If the MS, BSS, and MSC support DTM, the MSC sends the IMSI to the BSC after the SCCP
connection is established and the IMSI is available in the MSC.
 During immediate assignment and incoming BSC handover, the BSC sends Identity Request to the
MS, instructing the MS to report its IMSI.
3. Check the counters of the related scenarios of the key cell. View the counters of the day when
complaints are reported and a week before the day. If there is any exception, use the user
experience evaluation system to locate problems and optimize the network.
4. After optimization is made, pay return calls to users.

User Experience Evaluation System 4 Analysis on the Factors That Cause Complaints

4 Analysis on the Factors That Cause Complaints

The factors that cause complaints are categorized into the following types:
 Direct factor presence: CHRs or KPIs are directly related to the factor.
 Indirect factor presence: CHRs or KPIs are indirectly related to the factor. For example, problems
occurring in idle mode of MS are presented through the counters collected during an ongoing call.
 Other presence factors: These factors are not presented on the BSS side. Instead, they are located
and optimized with the help of CN KPIs and drive tests (DTs).

4.1 Analysis on the Problems When the MS Is in Idle Mode

The problem occurring in idle mode of MS is poor network signal. The symptoms and causes of poor
network signal are as follows:
 The MS signal is unstable.
The direct presence factor is the BTS output power fluctuation caused by the BTS.
The factors that are not presented on the BSS side are as follows:
− Cell ping-pong reselection. It is performed by the MS.
− Obstructions. Obstructions differ according to scenarios. Engineers need to perform dialing tests at
a specific site and DTs.
 Network unavailable, network access failure, and network for emergency only
The direct presence factor is that the cell is barred.
The indirect presence factors are as follows:
− Strong interference
− Repeater failure
− BTS clock failure
− No BTS coverage
− Severe configuration faults such as missing CIs
 No signal indoor but there is signal outdoor
The direct presence factor is poor indoor coverage.

4.2 Analysis on the Problems When the MS Accesses a

Network
The access involves the process of pressing the call launching key of the MS and hearing the ringing of
the called party. The process consists of the immediate assignment procedure, assignment procedure,
and paging procedure oriented to the called party.
The presence of access-related problems is that calls cannot be established when network signal is
available. The probable causes are as follows:
 The indirect presence factors are as follows:
− Call drops on the SDCCH
− The signal strength in the uplink and downlink is unbalanced.
− Network busy caused by SDCCH congestion, TCH congestion, insufficient Abis resource, or
insufficient TC resource.
− Service request rejection caused by the MSC. The probable causes are failures of authentication,
encryption, and TMSI re-assignment.

GSM BSS
User Experience Evaluation System 4 Analysis on the Factors That Cause Complaints

− CIC on the A interface is incorrectly configured.

− Board failure
 The indirect presence factors are as follows:
− Weak signal on the air interface
− Interference
− BSC/BTS device failure
 The factors that are not presented on the BSS side are as follows:
− The called party cannot put through.
− MS problem
− Repeater failure
If the time for establishing a call is too long, it is also considered as an access-related problem. The
direct presence of the problem is long delay caused by queuing, re-assignment, or direct retry.

4.3 Analysis on the Problems When the Call Is Ongoing

This type of problems refers to the speech service disruption when the status of an MS is normal.
Problems occurring during an ongoing call refer to the call drops when the BTS is in stable state and
the call drops caused by handovers. The probable causes are as follows:
 The direct presence factor is unbalanced level in the uplink and downlink.
 The indirect presence factors are as follows:
− Poor coverage
− Interference
− Users end calls because of poor speech quality
 The factors that are not presented on the BSS side are as follows:
− Device failure
− Transmission failure

4.4 Analysis on the Problems When the Speech Quality Is

Unfavorable
This type of problems refers to the problems caused by poor speech quality.
The probable causes of poor speech quality are as follows:
 The direct presence factors are one-way audio and no audio.
 The indirect presence factors are as follows:
− Intermittent speech
− Crosstalk
− Noise
− Echo
 The factors that are not presented on the BSS side are as follows:
− Poor quality of color ring back tone (CRBT) play
− Low speech volume
