My Personal Legend

As I have shared in the class, my personal legend only came to my realization when I looked for
work and landed a job as a bookkeeper.

I was in my third year of taking BS Nursing when I stopped. My parents encountered financial
difficulties when my father served as a guarantor on the debts of my mother’s siblings. They
were not able to pay their debts that the creditor goes after my father’s harvest. The harvest
should send us to school. Unfortunately, it did not.

I became an OFW for six years, helping my parents by sending my 5 siblings to college. They
have all graduated. I come back to the Philippines in February 2020, then the pandemic hits in
March 2020.

I developed a liking for baking, watching videos on youtube and facebook. It then became an
income-generating hobby and I saved a lot of money. I thought that I could go to school and
finish a degree in business while baking cakes. However, another challenge had come. My
mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I prioritize her health. My savings had helped us a
lot with her medical needs and chemotherapy. It’s gone, but my mother is on her way of healing,
all thanks to the Lord.

One day, on my mother’s second to the last chemotherapy session, a friend asked me if I
wanted to work as a bookkeeper. I said yes, but I don’t think I have the knowledge and skills to
be one. She then reassured me that I will be trained if I pass the interview. I went to the
interview and passed, even if I lack the academic qualifications. The General Manager told me
that she will hire me because she sees something in me, on the condition that after three
months I will be evaluated if I already knew and perform my task effectively. I passed the
evaluation and was offered a probationary contract as an accounting assistant. From there, I
developed a liking for accounting. I am fascinated with the work of an accountant. Relying on
youtube lessons and internet research, I become more acquainted with Accounts Receivables.
The company even awarded me with a Certificate of Recognition for my contribution to the
Accounting Department. The owner of the company personally handed me the award. After the
probationary period, I was offered an Accountant position and educational assistance. They
encouraged me to take up BS Accountancy and get the license. I was thrilled by the idea of
CPA.

I then proceed to enroll at U.E. Adjusting from 40-hours of work per week and 12-hours school, I
have encountered problems that made me decide to leave my job. I prioritize my personal
legend. I will continue my studies and graduate first and then return to the company after.
Financially, I worry. How could I get through the tuition fees? My brother told me that it is his
time to help me too. He sends me an allowance every month, not that big enough because our
mother has maintenance medications and routine checkups. My boyfriend told me that he will
finance my tuition fees and everything else I need. He said he is looking at me as an investment
now.
So now, I am happy pursuing my dream. I may not be well-financed but I make sure that every
cent I spend on my studies are all worth it. Not only because it is the hard earned money of my
loved ones, but because I set my goal so high. I will study accounting well, ingrained every
theory in me. So when the board examination comes, I will be well prepared. I want to belong to
the top. Why? It is not because of the recognition, but because after so many trials, I am able to
follow my personal legend. After all the delay, I want it to be so worth it I could say, Lord, thank
you, because all things happen at the right time.
