Text:
Benjamen Carson was born in 1951 in Michigan where he was brought up by his mother as
o
his father deserted the house when he was only eight years old. His mother Sonia had to
tc
abandon school only after a few years of education because of poverty and what she was
experiencing at school. Carson’s moods, in these conditions swung from good to bad. He was a
se
determined her son would have greater opportunities than she did. She required them to read
two books every week and give her written reports. At first, Ben resented the strict regimen.

But after several weeks of his mother’s unrelented position, he began to find enjoyment in
reading. Being poor, there wasn’t much opportunity to go anywhere. But between the covers
re
of a book, he could go anywhere, be anybody and do anything. He began to learn how to use
his imagination and found it more enjoyable than watching television.
Reading books changed him a lot. He began to see himself different from the other kids in
ep
his neighboring. He saw that he could become the scientist or physician she had dreamed
about. Staying focused on this vision helped him get through some of the more difficult time.
Within a year, Carson was amazing his teachers and classmates with his improvements. As he
recalled several years later, he began to realize he wasn’t stupid. He was top of his class and
the hunger of knowledge had taken hold of him. It wasn’t easy in the predominantly all-white
school. After Ben had received a certificate of achievement at the semester break, one of his
school teacher berated the white students for letting a black student get ahead of them
academically. Later at South Western High School in Inner — City Detroit, his science teachers
recognised his intellectual abilities and mentored him. He graduated with honors from high
school and wanted to pursue a medical career. But as his mother wasn’t well off, Carson had to
work through most of this time in college, determined to achieve his goals. He then knocked on
doors looking for summer work and usually got one through persistence. This work and a
scholarship allowed him to attended YALE University where he earned a BA in Psychology and
continued to become a neurosurgeon.
