Problem:

A 100 mm x 300 mm rectangular beam carries a uniformly distributed load of “W” kN/m over its entire
span. The beam is freely supported at its end. If the max. allowable bending stress is 8.27 MPa and
simultaneously the max. allowable shearing stress is 0.70 MPa.

1. Determine the value of maximum shear (V).

2. Determine the length of the span of the beam (L)
3. Determine the magnitude of the distributed load in kN/m “W”.

Solution:
1. Max. vertical shear:

fv= 3𝑉 W
2𝑏𝑑
3𝑉
0.70=
2(100)(300) L
V= 14000 N 100

V= 14 kN

2. Span of beam: 300

fb= 6𝑀
6𝑑2
6𝑀
8.27 =
100(300)2
M = 12.405 x 106 N.mm = 12.405 kN.m 3. Value of “W”
𝑊𝐿2
M=

𝑊𝐿 2
12.405 = 28
8 W=

W𝐿 = 99.24
𝑊𝐿 W = 7.91 kN/m
V=

14 = 𝑊𝐿

WL = 28
W𝐿2 = 99.24
WL = 28
99.24
L = 28
L = 3.54m.
