Short Discussion:

 Momentum is a fundamental concept that describes the quantity of motion

possessed by an object. The momentum of an object is calculated by multiplying its mass
(m) by its velocity (v), according to the equation:

p= momentum
m= mass
v= velocity Equation to use If you’re looking for If you know

P=mv Momentum Mass and

M=p/v Mass Momentum

and velocity
V=p/m Velocity Momentum
and mass

 Momentum is conserved in a closed system, meaning that the total momentum of the
system remains constant if no external forces act on it.
 This principle is known as the law of conservation of momentum. It is a powerful tool in
analysing collisions and interactions between objects.
 Momentum is a property of moving objects and arises from their motion. It is a
consequence of an object’s mass and velocity.
 Mass: Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object.
 Velocity: Velocity is the rate at which an object changes its position. It is a vector quantity,
meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction.
 Impulse is a measure of the change in momentum of an object. It is defined as the product
of the force acting on an object and the time interval during which the force is applied.
 In simpler terms, impulse is the amount of "oomph" or "push" given to an object over some
time. It's what causes a change in an object's momentum. The greater the impulse, the
greater the change in momentum.
 Impulse plays a crucial role in understanding and analysing collisions, as it helps determine
how forces affect the motion of objects over time.

Part I: Multiple Choice

Direction: Choose the correct answer.

1. When a force is applied to an object for a certain period of time, the resulting change in momentum
is called:
a) Acceleration
b) Impulse
c) Inertia
d) Velocity

2. Impulse is equal to the change in:

a) Force
b) Acceleration
c) Velocity
d) Momentum

3. If a force of 50 N is applied to an object for 2 seconds, what is the impulse experienced by the
object?
a) 25 N
b) 50 Ns
c) 100 N
d) 100 Ns

4. In which of the following situations is impulse NOT involved?

a) A car accelerating from rest
b) A person catching a baseball
c) A ball bouncing off a wall
d) A satellite orbiting Earth

5. If an object experiences a larger force over a shorter time interval, what happens to the impulse
experienced by the object?
a) The impulse increases
b) The impulse decreases
c) The impulse remains constant
d) The impulse becomes zero

Part II: True or False

Direction: Write “Momentum” if true and “Impulse” if false.

1. Impulse is defined as the change in momentum of an object.

2. Momentum is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction.

3. According to the law of conservation of momentum, the total momentum of a system

remains constant if no external forces act on it.

4. If the net external force acting on an object is zero, the impulse acting on the object must
also be zero.

collision is greater than the total momentum before the collision.

7 m/s. Calculate the momentum of the rock that has been throw.
2. Mr. Smith is playing bowling and the bowling ball has a mass 40kg with the
momentum of 400kg-m/s, what is the velocity of the bowling ball?
3. Joaquin is throwing a flying saucer with the speed of 15m/s with the momentum of
2.1kg-m/s, calculate and find the mass of the flying saucer.
4. Which has a greater momentum? A) a cheetah with a mass of 74kg and a running
