How to Doodle: The Complete Guide

Get ready for lots of cute illustrations!

Don’t mistake this for a stuffy art tutorial! You can draw along with me or just
enjoy looking at the illustrations in this how-to book. And don’t worry about
your drawing chops—this book is perfect for beginners.

Don’t worry about realism or

perspective; this way of drawing
is about just finding one or two
defining features to create
caricature-style illustrations.

You can use ballpoint pens,

markers or whatever drawing
implements you happen to have on
hand. They come in all different colors,
thicknesses and drawing qualities, so
see which ones you like best.

For those times when you want to try drawing; for those times when you’re
wondering how to draw something in particular; for those situations when you
are required to draw something or for other random moments—I hope this will
be the book you will turn to.

been used. These allow for colors to be layered

Basic tools These are the basic items you’ll need for
drawing. I’m not particularly fussy about
types of mechanical pencil leads, but I use
different types for different tasks.

don’t leave crumbs, and they’re handy to just
fiddle with when you’re thinking about something.

Personally, the item I get most nervous about when
it starts running low is paper. Copy paper varies in
color depending on the manufacturer, and the quality
may also change when brands renew their stock, so
it’s a bit of a gamble. In this respect, Maruman
Croquis books are consistent and reliable.

For drawing by hand, these types of pens are invalu-
able. The good thing about keeping these art materials
handy is that no preparation is needed, so you can draw
as soon as something comes to mind.

identified by number.

markers bleeds through the paper,
so I recommend placing paper
or something else underneath
the page which won’t matter
if it gets marked.

These are Copic’s 10 main colors, which the author has used in previously
published books as well.

Paper examp I keep a stock of blank notepaper and postcards.
les It’s handy to have blank stationery because you
can draw something different depending on the
season, time, place or occasion. I choose types
with simple ruled lines and that are a slightly
higher quality of paper.

Things I’ve drawn

These are notes on which I’ve used a ballpoint gel pen or
Copic Ciao markers to draw seasonally appropriate motifs.

various types, such as those made from Japanese paper, those where the lines are not
printed but are raised or embossed into the surface, those that come with envelopes
in a set and so on.
