Introduction

This report deals with my experience at an internship. I performed a supermarket internship and
was appointed as a manager for the shop. The supermarket paid me remuneration in the United
Kingdom according to the statutory minimum wage. I did this internship to analyze and
comprehend the experience as a full-time professional. I will be helped by my professional
expertise in improved professional elements like communication skills, quality of time
management, and other management abilities to participate effectively. Until I acquired a job or
internship, I could not gather a few professional experiences. This supermarket has contributed
to my results and my desired experiences. After applying to the division in concern, the
authorities organized an interview with my expertise and abilities. I did my best to meet your
inquiries and requirements and received a confirmation email from them later on. They had
chosen me and thought I qualified for the post of trainee. The letter I received from the
supermarket Pvt. Ltd. as a confirmation also includes the duties and obligations, I had to fulfill in
the division industry. I am thrilled to get employed as an assistant store manager in the
supermarket company named "pick n save". I have dreamt of getting such types of jobs for long
days. So, when I got the offer letter from the company, I got very much excited about my work
profile. The company provided me with several responsibilities like comparing the prices of the
products with that of the market, dealing with the performance requirements of the company
with care, reformulating the prices of the products and finally establishing a healthy relationship
with the previous as well as upcoming customers. I was also provide with the responsibility to
maintain the back office work like the maintaining the orders of the customers and the preparing
of the billing of the customers before the order get delivers to the designated customers. The
responsibility of promoting the products along with providing the advertisements of the products
should also be handled by me. All of these tasks were very much linked to my professional
discoveries and I was really happy to have these experiences under this business organization.
All I have learned was theoretical information and I have been able to confront all of the
academic knowledge in a practical sector with this apprenticeship opportunity. Different kinds of
responsibilities are assigned to me which include customer query solving, product demonstration
and dealing with the suppliers to get the most competitive price of products, identification of
customer needs and future demand, product review according to the pricing policy, and many

more. My internship duration is from 9th September 2020 to 8th September 2021. So it is about
to end within two consecutive months. In the span of this one year, I have learned various
aspects of the supermarket organizing requirements. Also, in the pandemic situation, the market
authority has decided to make this offline store an online platform. As in this pandemic situation,
it is tough to visit offline stores and customers are also preferring to have their required stuff on
their doorstep, so the decision is very relevant and important in this context. Now as a store
manager I have got more responsibilities to manage orders and delivery of online orders in
addition to the offline store management. The online business setup for this supermarket was not
an easy task to perform. The pandemic situation and lack of manpower supply make this project
to be very difficult. But as a store assistant manager, I have taken a huge responsibility to
accomplish the online startup plan and the planning and management of this project also helped
me in the enhancement of my managing quality. The overall experience and professional
expectations were high and all of those will be discussed in this report. I have put my best effort
into the achievement of the desired outcome.

Professional Experience

A placement session was carried out by several universities, and there were a number of
companies that were invited to perform the placement. I also opt for the placement session at
Pick n save Supermarket Company. Several rounds were arranged for the placement like soft
skill testing, group discussion and personal interview. Total one thousand students opt for the
placement in the company, and I was selected within two hundred out of them in the first round,
i.e., soft skill round. In the group discussion round, I was selected along with twenty students
(Ali, 2017). As I was my internship period, I was assigned to a variety of tasks like the product
selection in which, I had to select the various products on the basis of its quality and the demand
of the customers. I was also provided to some of the products to increase the selling of the
products to the customers’ side. I planned daily about the displaying structure of the products, so
that; product should be easily available to the customers without any hassle. I also surveyed the
warehouse about the supply of the products and to review the stocks. As the back-office worker,
I had to make the bills of the customers along with checking the orders.

Placement Overview

The introductory acknowledgment about placement for integrated learning courses is an


important path before being indulged with a company. It describes the condition during which a
student gains experience about various matters practically to get a better grip on the tasks that
need to be present in the future after getting selected (Goodwin and Mbah, 2019). The placement
system is typically conducted by various Universities to give an insight to the students about the
future strategy and matters that need to be followed as part of constructivism to their career. The
companies from different parts of the world engage in this session to infiltrate the talent and
knowledge-oriented candidates that are voracious to learn about different matters apart from their
academic skills. It is simply an orientation program that bifurcates the precious knowledge and
skills of a student and brings out the best with existing outlets and continuous development.
Several sessions are followed within the practical learning system and tactfully reverberate the
interpersonal skills to an elevated level. To be specific, the brief understanding of the placement
process promotes a clear view of the learning system with structured thoughts about the
programs that need to be retained by the student and hence spending their whole academic year
working for an organization (Fatima et al. 2018). The selection for a definite position in a
company can be allocated as a full-time employee or on a part-time basis. It can be demonstrated
as an internship course that enables the student to learn aesthetically and then finally return to
their respective universities to pursue the final degree. While it is an optional case for various
students, in most cases it is an important course that needs to be attained in due course of time.
A brief overview of my placement system has been introduced to deliver the thoughts,
experience, the changes perceived in the process both practically and behaviorally, and finally
the formation of my learning that has been integrated within (Twigg and Yates, 2019). I have
gone through the placement process where I have experienced different aspects which have
become the outlet of my knowledge flourishment and core implementation of skills necessary for
career perspective. I have chosen the idea of a placement session for the company Pick n Save.
The company is an established firm that operates by selling grocery products and delivering
services as per customer convenience.
I have been through the placement process for this company and am being assigned the position
of Assistant Store Manager. In total there were approximately 1000 students that have shown

their interest in this placement system and undergone different rounds of selection including
myself. I was glad to get selected among 200 students during the first round where the interactive
skills or commonly the soft skills were tested. To be exact there are overall five different rounds
that cover up the process and among them, I think the most difficult rounds are the first round
which is the soft skill, and the final group discussion round. Finally, I have got selected among
twenty from the group discussion round for the position.

Prior Experience

The contributive understanding of the experience that I have gained when I was assigned to be
one of the intern candidates for the position of Assistant Store Manager gives a clear view of the
controlled and explicit process that has been followed by Save n Pick to filter the exact
knowledge and skills that every candidate presents certainly have. I have gone through the
internship process where I have gained practical experience which has quantified my knowledge
and reasonably shifted my thoughts from theoretical to practical perception about a relevant
matter (Happ et al. 2020). It includes my interpersonal skills, the academic knowledge that I have
gained in previous years as well as the interactive skills that need to be coerced for proper
regulation and managing of the tasks. During my first day, I have been assigned different duties
which include the typical selection of product varieties based on their qualities and shelf life.
Based on my understanding, products must be kept in order and different sections of the store as
per their shelf life. It means that the products with low shelf life need to be kept in a different
section than those that can be stored for a longer duration. This improves the efficiency of the
work handling (Pooe and Mugobo, 2020). I have been assigned to test the quality of the product
and only select the good one. I have incorporated my perceptional view on quality assurance and
customer's views and demands about particular products.
The need to understand the customer's needs and meet their demands at first instance is what
every company acknowledges while manufacturing their products. Prominent to the effect, it is
then the role of the store manager and the associates to give an outlook on proper handling of the
product's quality and their efficient staffing in the store. Pick n Save is one of the renowned
supermarkets that overall run a customer-centric business and demands appropriateness from the
employees. While understanding their overall contribution I have appreciated my assigned
position for the Assistant Store Manager and hence ready to serve the necessary duties and

responsibilities with ascertained thoughts. My integrative thoughts about product selection, their
reliability, durability, and customer perception have been tested which successively pointed out
the view can be essentially modified for the betterment of the business (Fernandez and Meñez,
2020). My communication skills with other employees and customers are also tested while
assigning the task to acknowledge customers' grievances or while communicating with suppliers
and staff about different operations. I have been asked to review the pricing policies and
critically justify the changes that need to be done. The experience that I have retained with my
personal experience during the period has constructed my thoughts to justify every aspect
professionally and critically justify the understanding with self-indulgence and determination.
The practical learning system about professional courses that I have experienced during the
internship program has improved my existing skills and flourished my knowledge within the
better understanding of the responsibilities that I have to be honored after my selection for the
post. In total, I have gained a good experience that has improved my sense of understanding
about the professional field and what exactly the work configuration will be in a certain field that
I might hopefully be associated with (sciencedirect.com, 2021).

Company’s Evolution

The evolution of the company from in-store managing of business to online business venture is
an inferential understanding of the processes being integrated based on the critical consequence
of the pandemic. Save n Pick is a renowned supermarket that has started their business in the UK
and over time became one of the most popular supermarkets in the country. During my
internship in the company, I have managed to gain much experience about how to operate with
certain tasks and duties and how to handle different situations under varied circumstances
(Anjum, 2020). In my role as Assistant Store Manager, I have envisioned the idea of managing
different tasks at the same time to promote a progression in the already established business. In
this section, however, I want to discuss the company and how its establishment has supported my
ideas to choose the position in this firm. Before selecting the internship program in this
company, I have critically viewed the establishment, the success point, goals, and objectives of
the company which gave me Ransome details about Pick n Save. It is one of the largest and well-
established grocery supermarkets situated in Asia. Since its development in 1999, the company
has grown tremendously with the enormous support of employees, associates, and honored

appreciation from the customers. With time, the supermarket has gained good attention from the
customers and became one of the eminent "Asian grocery providers" in the UK. The goal of Pick
n Save comes with acknowledging the needs of retail customers and delivering the products as
per demands. Further, it also focuses on the need to deliver the products for the catering business
as well as for the restaurants. With the effective deduction of goals based on the business
strategy being followed, the supermarket has also set some objectives or principles to meet the
goal.
The evolution of the business from in-store to online promotes an opportunity to measure the
progress for Pick n Save toward globalization. In recent conditions of a pandemic the firm has
introduced its new strategy based on e-commerce business and ensures further with elicit home
delivery service (Zhang et al. 2019). The supermarket has reached its extremities under the
current situation of pandemics and mobilized its services at an outstanding level. With the
continuous increase of Covid situation, customers mainly choose the online process in every
possible aspect and hence it gives numerous companies an ability to rethink their business
strategy. Likewise, pick n Save has currently transformed into an online service portal and also
introduces home delivery for every customer. Thus, the change in existing business gives me a
second chance to prove myself the skills and strategies that I can develop for a successful online
business start-up and commemorate proper home deliveries with time and cost maintenance.

Present Experience

The contribution of existing knowledge and skills along with prior experience in the company
has given me an insight into the overall work formulation with an on-site approach. With the
continuous surge of the pandemic situation, it is difficult to maintain the flow of business in a
similar pattern and thus lead to the continuous decline of profit, customers, and resources (Cao et
al. 2018). Understandably, customers are terrified to buy products while coming into the store
where there is a good chance to get infected by the virus. So, the need to explore a better
business strategy is important. With the integration of the thought, I and my team who
deliberately manage the online work have started to promote online service for the retail
customers and also for other clients especially those who are related to the restaurant business.
My service team has installed every facility under my surveillance to promote easy services for
the customers while selecting their products from the list present in the portal. I have also asked

the team to install a page where the customers can give their reviews and also share their issues
and experiences about our online service (Jaman, 2020). To be specific, I have experienced a lot
with my present responsibilities. I have learned how to cope with critical situations and what can
be the factors that need to be controlled to establish a good and sound business strategy. Further,
the home delivery service that has been devised recently is a promiscuity factor that practically
ensures betterment for Pick n Save. The workers who have been associated with the delivery
service received good care and safety precautions for them as well as for the customers so that
effective services can be delivered to the customers (sciencedirect.com, 2021).
The proactive acknowledgment of the service that has been delivered in recent times gives a
surmount knowledge about the crucial factors that need to be retained with individual courses of
action. From my current experience, I have ensured one thing which explains that professional
gain is one of the crucial factors that every individual must experience before being indulged in
real service (Suvethika and Shivany, 2018). My prior experience was concerned with in-store
management of activities and to some extent direct interaction with the customers and suppliers.
However, in the current situation, the need to explore improved strategies and their
implementation in the business has diversified my mind with a spectacular concept of how to
assimilate prior and current knowledge to promote successful deliverables. My experience in
recent times regarding all the activities avoid fiscal mind and ascertains to-the-point action for
proper management of the situation. From my prior experience I have learned so many things
like how to deal with customers, the way to communicate with other employees and the clients,
establishment of a good rapport with the customers, and checking the quality of the products
(Milder, 2017). All this learning gives a better outcome in recent times as well. However, my
current experience has also incorporated the ways through which I have successively managed
the online service and home deliveries in a delectable manner.

Reaction

The placement and internship opportunity in this supermarket named “pick and save” has given
me various kinds of experiences and after the evaluation of those experiences, I have realized my
reaction towards this company and the entire process of recruitment. The major fact is that the
company has aimed to convert itself to an online store with the offline business alongside
(Reinert, C.D., and Murray, 2017). It was my aspiration and passion to serve customers from the

front section so that some of the work I was given from the supermarket was tied into by the
authority or body. I was very happy to be a supermarket business intern. I was drawn by the
management tasks from the first day of my apprenticeship and as this is extremely important in
the workplace, I was picked and was also interested to have many management tasks in charge
from very early on. I always wished to manage staff or the workplace for my future
(Sangkawetai, 2021). I am optimistic about my future career in various management positions
due to this internship which introduced me to management tasks at very short notice and also
helped me to improve my communication abilities. I am very much glad to be an assistant store
manager. I realized that there is a difference between work as an employee and performing study
as a student. As an employee, I serve the company and perform the responsibility of the company
that should be done by me. But as a store manager, more responsibility is carried as the persons
who recruited me should have faith on me If my performance should be poor, then the function
of the company under my operation should collapse. But, if my performance should be good,
then the prosperity of the company should be increased, and the company should be able to
expand its business to a versatile area (Coccia, 2019). So, I studied several books for performing
the right work before participating in the interview session in the company. I performed every
step of recruitment with great care, and the questions selected for the soft skill testing were
practiced by me several times, the topic of the group discussion was also got common as I
studied several group discussion topics. The questions asked in the interviews round was totally
conceptual and I became capable to answer the questions as I cleared my subjective concepts
during study.
In the year 2020, human lives will have changed as most people across the world will have to
modify their working strategy but the grocery and supermarket businesses are staying open; I and
my colleagues have recognized our obligation as the vulnerability has increased. Since I have the
responsibility to manage the basic guidelines, I ensure that I affirmatively follow them and now
it is the moment that I recognize that my communication skills have many dimensions too, that
my staff members have made me an improved person with their safety and that my work is done
very much, which is generally the duty of the product sender and receiver or customer (Jarvi,
2020). The time when I joined this supermarket store was the most crucial time for mankind and
the pandemic situation has hit the world hard. In such a situation I had faced the most
challenging situation in each aspect of my duties. The supermarket business had decided to

expand its business on an online platform to sustain itself in this competitive situation. So, as a
store manager, huge responsibilities have come on my part and I need to fulfill those
expectations for my benefit and also for the convenience of the business (Sarif, 2020). The
requirement for an online business setup is technology-oriented and as a store manager, it was
my duty to supervise this part and arrange a technological team that can do this task at a
competitive price (Fagerstrøm et al. 2021). The availability of products online, discount
management, and offers in various periods are all part of the online business setup and at that
time I realized that managing a supermarket business online is much more challenging than
offline store management. Customer engagement is virtual in this process and that is why I need
to follow the customer preferences thoroughly via online support (asu-ir.tdl.org, 2021).

Evaluation

My work-integrated experience assessment is widely accepted for the development of


fundamental and professional skills as well as for enhancing employer-related workplace
preparation. This training has strengthened my organizational skills and professionalism, yet the
position is complete assimilation of personal development skills to enhance self-attainment and
maintenance. I have developed sufficient ideas of employability to make my knowledge of job-
related activities much more peaceful and also impact my social skills via conceptual change by
working together in a setting relevant to work and by a practical approach based on experiences
(Loate et al. 2021). I recognized the concept of professionalism in a self-satisfied manner, where
the focus was initially on the customer-centric value, and also revived the operation of reacting
to a specific situation under various circumstances. The major contribution of this employment
training has been a perspective of working capability. The inclusion of the material and the
expertise evaluation from the course ensures that knowledge gained during the academic time is
accountable and refined. The major aim and correct evaluation of the placement process led to an
overview of the progress it supports during every stage of the operation (Hill et al. 2017). The
view I have detected from my experience describes my skills and finishing skills in the
professional sphere to ultimately prepare myself for the work profile as an assistant store
manager (acm.org, 2017). This is the first time in my life when I worked as an employee, and I
realized several things regarding the recruitment procedure. I observed that every student has
some unique characteristics that should be required for a particular sector. A total of one

thousand students have applied for the recruitment procedure in the company. The company
selected only five. But that does not mean that the rest of the students do not have any
employability skills. I was recruited for a particular sector, i.e., the supermarket sector. I observe
the characteristics of the students, who should be able to serve this organization only. I required
the skills of compelling the customers to purchase a product by conversation, the ability to
handle several operations regarding store keeping (Jarvis et al.2017). I had to do maintain the
policy of pricing of the products which were displayed in the store along with the displaying of
all of the products in perfect sequence. I also served the back office and my operation during the
internship was to place orders and invoicing the bills of the customers. The product displaying
team of several products should be operated under the guardianship of the store managers.
Definitely, I should handle the supervisors and should guide them, who are working under me,
but in the field, the supervisor should have to handle the case by himself. The main responsibility
of handling as well as managing every department along with the products in a supermarket is
laid within the hands of the assistant store managers.
The combination of the material and the expertise evaluation from the course ensures that
knowledge gained during the academic time is accountable and refined. The major aim and
correct evaluation of the placement process lead to an overview of the development it supports
during every stage of the operation (Chriqui et al. 2018) based on my experience and a previous
assessment of the role of the university, the main understanding conceptualized with knowledge
of the approach to learning and also makes the distinction that inspired the influences of the
whole concept to grow or upgrade with a practical knowledge aside from experiences in the
classroom. It has improved my learning ability in the workplace. Work-integrated learning
(WIL) impacts the interaction courses to improve the workplace and formal education.
I was grateful enough to have a deeper insight into the work culture and practices firsthand with
emphasized work-integrated knowledge through my work experience during my placement. A
specified learning strategy and commitment to a self-motivated development increase the overall
process of critical judgment that determines planning, improvement, and accomplishment.
During my continuing education, the effect of this work-induced learning technique encouraged
me to reaffirm my expertise and to thoroughly explore the issues, and make a valid response
based on client views (Robinson et al. 2021). I was offered an assignment in which the work
given outlines largely the roles I need to play to reduce my problems with service and products.

In addition, my comprehension of the project was supplied to comprehend and the advice to
enhance different parts of the given project was also requested. Initially, I had been a worrying
nerve to provide the productive result, but certain recommendations were not likely to be made.
However, it has raised expectations inside me and enhanced my level of confidence, which has
successfully helped to produce a great result (pick n save.co.uk, 2021).

Applications

When I applied for the interview, I observed that the interviewer asks questions about the subject
matter thoroughly, and a large number of questions were asked by the interviewer. So, I focused
on the concept most rather than memorizing a bunch of questions (Wang, 2018). I became of
familiar with the process of the price planning of the products. I also gained experience about
making the billsss of the customers. I will gain benefit from the experience I have acquired from
this internship in the future. I've learned from this supermarket business that being a manager as
a professional is not an easy job. I have to be more tolerant and competent in future
administrative roles. It will be beneficial to all the talents I have acquired from this organization.
I understand that time management abilities are quite important in these kinds of professional
fields. It is extremely important and crucial in these kinds of service organizations that time is
managed and that consumers are served with their orders and groceries at the right time. Sales
techniques and growth are another prime and important factor that I have learned from this
business process (Meyer et al. 2017). A significant proportion of applicants were involved in
projects and activities that encourage them to perform in an active workplace. It is incredibly
important to operate a team in a tough climate. It is a good concept for supermarket services,
where a big number of people engage together consistently, and many consumers have to be
controlled at a particular moment in time, placing the person who has worked in a busy
environment via various projects and views enhances efficiency.
As the supermarket has expanded its business in online platforms, the order placed by customers’
needs to be delivered timely, and also accurate order delivery with exact quality and quantity
should be maintained and taken care of. The experience of this new setup is going to help me in
my future working application (Finlayson, 2017). Online marketing and business of any kind of
products are now a part of daily lives and this experience will give me an extra advantage to my
career growth. Managing a team that will perform the online tasks of order selection, product

availability, timely delivery, and payment collection will improve my quality of management
skills and experiences of working on an online platform-based business. In the pandemic time, it
is hard to find manpower for the working necessity, but at the same time, so many people have
lost their daily wages due to this hard pandemic situation (Long et al. 2020). So as a manager I
suggested the management and the authority of the supermarket publish a notice for those
workers who got unemployed and use them in this new venture. As per my suggestions, the
notification was published and I was glad that many applicants were present to grab this
opportunity. This entire idea not only helped me in understanding the manpower arrangement
and recruitment process but also, I have helped a lot of people who required it the most. This
impacted my moral experiences along with professional ones and it will support me to be a great
professional in the future with having moral values.

Conclusions

The job is very challenging, and there are enough things to be learned from the job profile. The
regular comparison of prices of products should be made very carefully as the process of the
products within the markets are continuously going up and down. There is a wide range of
customers, and the demand of the customers is varied. I have to work hard to keep up with the
demand of each customer because the customers are the top courses of income for the company.
The displaying methods of the products are also changed weekly in such a way so that the new
product should be able to grab the attention of the customers. The entire job provides me with
witty, great pleasure, and I really enjoy my profile as an assistant store manager. It can be
concluded from the overall discussion that I have made relevant discoveries about placement
methods. The processes for appointment were based on the assistant manager at the supermarket.
At the time of employment, enough knowledge or information concerning employer information
was supplied. For this placement method, both positive and negative elements were decided by
me. In this reflection content, I have revealed my genuine thoughts and experiences as an
assistant store manager. A particular assessment of the experience in the business has been
carried out as a reflection of the substance of this unique project. I noted also in this project that
at the time of the internship I worked differently as an assistant store manager. A comprehensive
briefing has been adequately detailed and characterized in this respect.

Speaking about the 'Save Supermarket Limited' experience was extremely informative and open-
eyed. They recruited me to gain a better understanding of the processing division in the
management department. I spent almost a year at this company and studied what they're doing
and how they operate in their daily work. Taking the whole issue into account, I have appreciated
a relaxed working atmosphere that has changed much from prior areas. I liked meeting with
employees from several departments who have an overview of their work culture and their
everyday job. I have been able to talk to the many staff and acquire a greater knowledge of the
workplace. I developed the whole material based on my thoughts. I shared my experience and
recognized that I have evolved as a person in a short interval and have learned numerous kinds of
job options accessible today to young people. As this business is a supermarket and the startup
on an online platform is the new venture of this business so I have got the entire experience of
transforming an offline business store to an online one. One of the main lessons in investments is
meeting targeted sales, which relies on every company's sale, and the integrity of the ability to
utilize those unique features to enhance its operations and regulation by a professional
application to the investment agency and program. As an assistant store manager, it should be
incredibly important and beneficial to apply this obtained experience inside the organization,
through several responsiveness initiatives, which produce responsibility among the individuals
who operate within an organization.
