1. Some engineers were trying to model an ice
cream sandwich with two steel faces and a plastic
core. They decide to apply a moment (𝑀𝑀 =
5 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 ∗ 𝑚𝑚) to the beam. The specific dimensions
of the beam are shown in the figure. The modulus
of elasticity of the steel and plastic are 200 𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺
and 800 𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀 respectively. Find the maximum
tensile stresses in the steel and the plastic using
the transformed-section method.

2. After having such a good time modeling ice cream
sandwiches out of plastic and steel, the engineers
decided to do it again but this time with more layers of
aluminum and plastic. This time the base of the
sandwich model is 75 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 wide, and the height
is 212 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚. The aluminum sections have a height
of 3 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚, while the small plastic sections have a height
d = 40 mm. The modulus of elasticity of the aluminum
and plastic are 75 𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺 and 3 𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺𝐺 respectively.

3. A few of the engineers from the previous
problems decide to expiriment with I beams
and concrete. They have a W 12 x 50 steel I
beam and slab of concrete that are placed
together in such a way that there is no shear
stress wehre they meet. Together, the I beam
and concrete resist a positive moment of
95 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 ∗ 𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖. Because of the unique properties
of the steel and concrete used, the ratio of the
moduli of elasticity of the steel and concrete
is 12:1.
