WHAT IS LITERATURE?

 The term derives from Latin literatura which means writing.


 Literature refers to written works of imaginative, artistic, or intellectual value, typically
characterized by the use of language to convey ideas, emotions, and experiences.
 Helps to understand human nature

Prose
Prose is a form of literature that uses ordinary language and has a natural flow of speech. It is
distinguished from poetry, which uses a formal meter and rhyme. Prose typically consists of sentences
and paragraphs and is used for a variety of genres, including novels, essays, short stories, and newspaper
articles.

Poetry
Poetry is a genre of literature that uses imaginative and often rhythmic language to express an idea,
evoke emotion, or tell a story. It is often used to convey complex emotions and ideas in an accessible and
creative way. Poetry can take many different forms, from traditional rhyme schemes to free verse.

Two parts of Prose


Fiction - in literature is any story or novel that is created from the author ' s imagination, as opposed to
being based on facts or real events.

Non-fiction - in literature is a genre which encompasses essays, biographies, memoirs, and other written
works that are based on facts and real events

Literary Genres (Fiction)


Fantasy - A story that is imaginative. The setting might be of another world. Characters might be magical.

Historical Fiction - A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. The setting is
often real but the characters are made up from the author's imagination.

Science Fiction - It is a story based on the impact of potential science, either actual or imagined. Science
fiction is one of the genres of literature that is set in the future or in other planets.

Mystery - It is a genre of fiction that deals with the solution of a crime or the unraveling of secrets.
Anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown

Contemporary Fiction - Contemporary fiction captures the essence of modern life, reflecting our current
realities, challenges, and cultures through relatable narratives. It's a mirror to today's society, offering
fresh perspectives and emotional resonance. As it evolves with the times, it invites us to explore the
diversity of the human experience.
Dystopian – Relating to a very bad or unfair society in which there is a lot of suffering, especially an
imaginary society in the future, or to the description of such a society

Romance - A romance novel is a work of extended prose fiction with a theme of love.

Romantic comedy - Romantic comedy (also known as romcom or rom-com) is a subgenre of comedy and
romance fiction, focusing on lighthearted, humorous plot lines centered on romantic ideas, such as how
true love is able to surmount most obstacles.

Literary Genres (Non fiction)


Autobiography - It is the story of a real person's life that is written by himself or herself.

Biography - A true story an author writes about another person.

Narrative Nonfiction - A narrator tells a true story about people, things, animals or events, current or
historical. The information is organized around an idea.
