Legend of Barangay Alcantara, Lemery, Iloilo

Lemery is one of the most prestigious Municipality in Iloilo that belongs in

Quinto Distrito, District 5. A friendly nature that can be found in Lemery which one of

the barangay that are not common to most people but it is a wonderful and have a

lovely people lived in and that is the Barangay Alcantara, Lemery, Iloilo. This

Barangay was formerly called Alagingay; It was derived from the name gingay, which

grows widely among the people, especially on river banks. Gingay plant belongs to

the Talahib family and its flowers or tassel is used in the making of brooms. . The

Alagingay River flows through the area, and the sand and gravel found in the soil are

the source of construction materials, from which construction vendors purchase

these materials from the community.

The whole of Alagingay belongs to Patricio Alcantara, a wealthy farmer from

Sara. He was instrumental in organizing the people who would later found Brgy. Mr.

Alcantara is a philanthropic man who led Brgy. Alcantara. Immediately, after his

death, the people honored his name and Alagingay changed its name to Alcantara.

Community is adjacent to Brgy. It is part of the municipality of Lemery and the

province of Capiz because Capiz is located on the other side of the Alagingay River.

The resettlement project requires regional scope. Brgy. Layogbato is located in the

east, Capiz province is in the north and west, and Brgy is in the south. Marapal. The

region is mountainous and people mostly practice kaingin to survive on common

land. The Jison family in Negros purchased land from Alcantara's heirs and planted

sugar and corn. The upland promised a good site for agro-forestry project.
