CHARLES’ LAW
Charles’ Law states that for a given amount of gas at constant pressure, the volume is directly
proportional to the temperature in Kelvin, V α T. Charles’ Law is expressed in equation form as:
T 1 V 2=T 2 V 1. The subscript of 1 refers to the initial conditions while 2 refers to the final conditions.
Temperatures should be expressed in Kelvin before substituting the values in the equation.

Let’s apply Charles’ Law in solving problems related to volume-temperature relationship in

gases.
Sample Problem:
An inflated balloon with a volume of 0.75 L at 30°C was placed inside the freezer where the
temperature is -10°C. Find out what will happen to the volume of the balloon if the pressure remains
constant. Support your answer with computation.

Just like what we did before, let’s start with the given variables:
Initial Conditions Final Conditions
V 1=0.75 L V 2=?
T 1=30 °C=303 K T 2=10 ° C=263 K

Convert the temperature to Kelvin.

K=° C+ 273 T 1=30+273=303 K
T2 = -10 + 273 = 263K
Solve for the final volume,

V 1 T 2 (0.75 L)(263 K ) 197.25 L

V 2= = = =0.65 L
T1 303 K 303

V 2=0.65 L final volume

Conclusion: The volume decreases because the temperature decreases too. In this case, the
volume between the gas molecules decreases because the kinetic energy is also
affected by temperature.

Activity 1: SOLVE ME!

Direction: Answer the following Charles’ Law problems to facilitate mastery of concepts on the
volume-temperature relationship. Follow the steps and show your solution. Use extra sheet if
necessary. (5 points each)

1. A tank (not rigid) contains 2.3 L of helium gas at 25°C. What will be the volume of the tank
after heating it and its content to 40°C temperature at constant pressure?

2. A sample of 50.0 L of nitrogen is compressed to 5.0 L. What must be the new temperature (in
Kelvin) be to maintain constant pressure?
