CHARLES’ LAW

Directions: Calculate the following Boyle’s Law problems below. Use the GRESA method, show the Given
(G), Required (R), Equation (E), Solution (S), and Answer (A). Refer to the sample problem for
your reference to answer solve the problem.

Sample Problem:

A container holds 50 mL of nitrogen at 25 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 736 mmHg. What will be its
volume if the temperature increases by 35 degrees Celsius?

Given:
T 1=25 ° C ,V 1 =50 mL,T 2=35 ° C
Required: V 2
Equation: V 1 /T 1 =V 2 ¿ T 2 or V 1 T 2=V 2 T 1 Derived Equation: V2 = V1T2 / T1
Solution:
1. Convert Temperature to Absolute temperature (Kelvin)
T 1=25 ° C +273=298 K
T 2=25 °C +35 °C +273=333 K
NOTE: Temperature must always be in absolute temperature which is in Kelvin (K=° C+273 )
2. Substitute the given:
50 mL ( 333 K )=V 2 (298 K )
3. Simplify:

50 mL ( 333 K ) V 2 (298 K )
=
298 K 298 K

50 mL(333)
V 2=
298

Answer: V2 = 55.87 mL
Your Turn! Answer the following problems below. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. A 2.00 L gas sample at 20.0 degree Celsius is cooled until it occupies a volume of 520 mL. What
is the new temperature of the gas at constant pressure?
2. A gas occupies 900.0 mL at a temperature of 27.0 °C. What is the final volume at 132.0 °C?
3. The volume of a gas is 10.0 liters and its temperature is 1500 K. If the temperature is decreased
to 750 K, what is its new volume?
4. A gas at 400 K and 10.0 L expands to 20.0 L. What is its new temperature in Kelvin?
5. I have made a thermometer which measures temperature by the compressing and expanding of
gas in a piston. I have measured that at 100.0 0 C the volume of the piston is 20.0 L. What is
the temperature outside if the piston has a volume of 15 L? What would be appropriate clothing
for the weather
