What is a Text?
Are words in a written work.
Are the original words of something that is written, printed or spoken.
Text type depends on their:
 Purpose
 Structure
 Language Feature
What is a Text type?
 Is a way of classifying and defining different types of language interaction, both spoken and written.
 It refers to the purpose of a text and the way it is written.
What are Text Types?
Refers to the basic types of writing. They are categorized as to factual or literary.
1. Factual Text Types
 These are used to inform, recount, instruct or persuade readers.
 Endeavour to inform, instruct, or persuade through the use of facts and information.
Examples:
 speeches
 historical documents
 government reports
 instructional/procedural text
 persuasive text
2. Literary Text Types
 These are used to entertain using language formed and structured in a creative manner.
 Seek to entertain, enlighten, or elicit emotion through a creative use of language and structure.
Examples:
 poetry,
 Short story, myth, legend
 Fables, fantasy
 Science fiction
 Stage play
 Television script
 Cartoon.
The Most Commonly used Text Types are:
1. Classification- Shows groupings and categories.
 Uses signal words such as first, finally, to begin, next, in addition, on the other hand, for example, or then
 It classifies, describes, and gives information about people, animals or phenomena.
 Presents the overall idea that splits it into parts to provide clarity and description.
2. Explanation- Tells how things work and why things happen.
 Title reveals what is being explained.

 Tells how something works or why something happens.

3. Enumeration- Lists or enumerates the ways, types and other information.
 Uses signal words such as first, next, finally and so on.
 They maybe listed using commas, or enumerated one by one.
 Lists the kinds, characteristics, classes, types, parts, ways, groups, and other information of a certain thing.
 Parts are introduced by signal words such as: first, next, or they may be listed using commas or enumerated
one by one.
4. Time Order or Recount- Retells events in correct time order.
 Written in the past tense as text types relates events that already happened
 Uses time connectives to organize time order. Example: first, then, next, after that, etc.
 Retells an experience or an event that happened in the past.
 Presents events that are arranged in correct time order.
 May inform, entertain, reflect or evaluate
 Written in the past tense
