Gears and Movement

1. Introduction

It is realized a construction of a tiny working bike, by a gear mechanism, such as investigate and

learn about them it a 20 days deadline.

4
Gears and Movement

2. Justification

This model Will be made by the desire of showing how to apply the learn we earned

about such mechanisms, and how to give it correct function.

5
Gears and Movement

3. Objectives

3.1 General

- Make gears work along with the mechanism

- Expose the mini bike

3.2. Specifics

- Build bicycle´s base without any mechanism.

- Created the mechanism and connected to the motor

- Stick both pieces together.

- Explain how the gears allow the mini bike move.

- Show how the motor creates movement on the mechanism.

- Put mini bike to work.

4. Bike´s History

First bicycle model was invented 200 years ago, by Karl Drais on June 24, 1817, who pick

"Walking machine" as the first name for his creation. Over the years, it has slowly evolved into what

we currently know.

5. Gear Types

Gears are mostly used for rotational movement transition, which one we usually see at the time of

speed change. There exist different classifications based on their axes; parallel and perpendicular

ones, and some used on special applications.

Bicycles we always observed, work thanks to a gear and chain mechanism, where the first gear is

the one that receives the power, provided from pedals and driven to it by the chain, while the second

one is who gives it such power. Speed changes are based on the sized of the gear, giving then, the

desired force to it, although these changes will not be necessary for the wanted model, as it will have

an uniform travel and speed.

6. Movement

The mini bike will count with the condition of no changes on it speed, so it will only require two

gears; entrance and exit, and the chain connecting them. On top of that, the little bike will receive the

necessary power from a simple motor and a 9-volt battery, being this the one that replaces the induced

force we generate on the pedals, to an automatic one.

Gears and Movement

7. Procedure

The base of the model will be made from PVC tubes, which be cut to the necessaries sizes and

then glued together, after that the wheels will be joined to the gears also adding training wheels to

give it more stability. From the other part, the motor will be connected to the battery, so both pieces

can be finally joined, and motor can provide the force that will cause the movement through the chain.

8. Conclusions

The bike will be driven by the previously mentioned chain gear system, allowing it to move

without the need of any human intervention just using the force of the battery and motor, showing

what can be made thanks to gears.
