Abstract
This study investigated the environmental impact of natural fabric dye as well as the
dyeing process of oregano leaves compared to synthetic dyes in terms of color
fastness, durability, and longevity. The participants (N = 15) were convenient and
easiest for the researcher to access. The sampling technique that were used was the
convenience sampling wherein, data collection doesn’t follow any rules; the researcher
isn’t seeking out a specific audience. So, they don’t need to worry about age, gender,
race, or any demographic questions. After that the participants answered the statement
of the problem in the study. Our analysis had shown a strong correlation between the
environmental impact of using natural fabric dye and the color fastness, durability, and
longevity of the synthetic dye and the natural fabric dye. We conclude that using natural
fabric dye made from oregano leaves offers an eco-friendly and sustainable product.

Background
of the Synthetic chemicals in the textile industry are harmful to the environment and
contribute to global warming. They are carcinogenic, non-biodegradable, and
spread allergic diseases. The production of these dyes is dependent on

problempetrochemical sources and contains carcinogenic amines. The growth of the

textile industry in the Philippines has increased the discharge of textile
wastewater containing dyes. Green products, such as natural dyes, have been
revived in the textile industry due to their biodegradability, durability, and
environmental friendliness. Studies have explored the extraction of eco-friendly
natural dyes from mango leaves and the pulp of oregano and sage. However,
these methods have not significantly reduced the environmental impact of the
dyes

Oregano leaves, a common herb with a distinct smell and intense green color,
have potential as a natural dye for fabric. They contain natural pigments like
anthocyanins and flavonoids, which can be extracted and used to dye fabric.
This study aims to investigate the color fastness, durability, longevity, and
properties of oregano leaves in fabric dyeing, as well as their environmental
impact. The objective is to optimize the extraction process to achieve durability,
longevity, and color fastness while ensuring a sustainable and environmentally
friendly process.
Research Questions
This study aims to find out if the oregano leaves can be extracted to create a liquid green
dye and the environmental impact of using it. Specifically, the research answers the
following questions:

1. What are the properties of oregano leaves that are suitable in making a natural fabric
dye?

2. How does the dyeing process with oregano leaves compare to traditional synthetic
dyes on silk in terms of:
a. colorfastness
b. durability
c. longevity

3. What is the degree of acceptance of the respondents regarding the use of Oregano-
Alternative Fabric Dye?

4. What are the environmental impacts of using oregano leaves as sustainable herbal
fabric dye?
