Section One
Topic: Violent video games should be banned

Section Two

I will focus on video games narrowing down to the violent video games and try to

convince my audience that these video games are harmful to our society and should be banned.

Section Three: Thesis Statement

The thesis statement will be in line with the topic and must draw the audience’s attention.

Thesis statement: Violent video games are potentially dangerous to the society and thus should

be banned.

Section Four: Target Audience

The target audience consists of 45 representatives from The Entertainment Software

Rating Board (ESRB)

Section Five: Rhetorical Considerations

The audience consists of members who develop video games as well as executives that

make decisions on any regulatory laws imposed on video games. The audience is admixture of a

group of open-minded persons and another group of persons against the idea of banning violent

video games, considering they develop the games. The latter group of people could disagree with
me, but I will have three points that will go a long way in changing their minds. They will want

to consider this because it may affect them directly once it affects the community they live in.

Section Six: Introduction

This will be a controversial speech but hear me out. There are many video games that

have surfaced that seem to replicate the violence that occurs in wars. Not only have these games

replicated wars, but also made simulations of extreme violence within the very cities we know

and live in. with unlimited access, I believe these violent video games are a potential hazard to

the community and should therefore be tamed by either banning them or restricting them to a

vetted set of population.

Section Seven: Main Body

Violent video games can cause one to be desensitized to violence. This can cause one to

be overly aggressive in real life and this can have impactful ramifications to a person’s social and

mental wellbeing (Gotterbarn, 372). This can also lead to decreased empathy, a tolerance for

violence, and high likelihood of engaging in fights.

Violent video games can have a negative impact on children. Many violent video games

are age-restricted, but children can lie to play them. Exposure of violence to young children can

lead to behavioral problems that could include anxiety, nightmares, and depression that can have

life-long ramifications. Children can also start being violent at very young ages (Katsarov, 351).

Finally, violent video games are a threat to public safety. This is because violent video

games can contribute to real life violence. When a teenager plays a video game simulator that

simulates a city he lives in harboring all types of crime, he might be prompted to engage in such

violent behaviors.

next generation." Information systems frontiers 12 (2010).

Section Nine: Conclusion

I hope I have not scared anyone. Haha. It is always better safe than sorry. Violent video games

are potentially dangerous to the society and thus should be banned. It is best if we can restrict the

amount of violence in the games that our children and teenagers play, to avoid desensitizing

them to violence and giving them any long-lasting behavioral problems.

Section Ten: Presentation Aid Planning

I will use PowerPoint. I will include five slides. One for the introduction, one for each of

the main points, one for the conclusion and another for the ending of the session. All the slides

will have visuals of respective topics.
