engine spinner.
(b) Use a plumb bob, STD-11729, to mark a location on the floor directly under the center of the
aft engine.
(d) Draw a parallel line exactly 5 inches outboard of the first line.
NOTE: This is your center line for the engine stand that takes into account the
engine clock rotation after initial lowering.
(31) Put the engine transportation stand in its position below the engine.
NOTE: When you lower the engine to the transportation stand, you can make
adjustments to the transportation stand position to align the interface brackets
correctly.
(a) Move the engine stand into its position from the rear of the engine.
1) Make sure that you keep the engine stand on the center line.
(b) Attach a plumb bob, STD-11729, to either the right or left aft engine bosses of the turbine
rear frame.
(c) Continue to move the stand forward until the plumb bob is near the aft transportation stand
location where the interface bracket will be installed.
1) This will align the forward/aft position of the stand with the engine.
(d) Final stand positioning can be made when the engine has been lowered to within close
proximity of the stand.
(32) Attach the aft bootstrap tool to the engine as follows (Figure 2, Aft Bootstrap Tool Assembly,
Figure 4, Aft Bootstrap Tool Installation):
(a) Make sure that the chains hang correctly, are not twisted, and do not go across each other.
1) If the chains go across each other, they will not move freely when they hold the weight of
the engine.
(b) Make sure that you monitor the position and movement of the chains when you lower the
engine.
1) Adjust the position of the chains to make sure that the chains do not catch on the engine
hardware.
(c) Attach the 3-ton hoist [9] to the aft outboard load arm assembly [15] with the load cell [10].
1) The load cell pins and load meters are identified with serial numbers.
a) Make sure that you do not mix load cell pins and load meters with different serial
numbers.
b) The load cell pins are calibrated to the digital load meters with the same serial
number.
(d) Attach the 3-ton hoist [9] to the engine lift bracket on the turbine rear frame.
(33) Attach the forward bootstrap tool to the engine as follows (Figure 6, Forward Bootstrap Tool
Assembly, Figure 7, Forward Bootstrap Tool Installation):
(a) Make sure that the chains hang correctly, are not twisted, and do not go across each other.
1) If the chains go across each other, they will not move freely when they hold the weight of
the engine.
(b) Make sure that you monitor the position and movement of the chains when you lower the
engine.
1) Adjust the position of the chains to make sure that the chains do not catch on the engine
hardware.
(c) Attach the outboard forward 6-ton hoist [35] to the forward outboard arm assembly [37] with
the load cell [32].
1) The head of the load cell pins have a flat side that must align with flat tabs on the
bootstrap bushing.
2) The head on the forward load cell pins can be installed on the forward or aft sides of the
forward bootstrap tool arms.
3) The load cell pins and load meters are identified with serial numbers.
a) Make sure that you do not mix load cell pins and load meters with different serial
numbers.
b) The load cell pins are calibrated to the digital load meters with the same serial
number.
(d) Attach the inboard forward 6-ton hoist [35] to the forward inboard arm assembly [31] with the
load cell [32].
1) The head of the load cell pins have a flat side that must align with flat tabs on the
bootstrap bushing.
2) The head on the forward load cell pins can be installed on the forward or aft sides of the
forward bootstrap tool arms.
3) The load cell pins and load meters are identified with serial numbers.
a) Make sure that you do not mix load cell pins and load meters with different serial
numbers.
b) The load cell pins are calibrated to the digital load meters with the same serial
number.
(e) Attach the two 6-ton hoists [35] to the engine at the two engine to bootstrap interface
brackets [100].
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU DO NOT GO ABOVE THE SPECIFIED LOAD VALUES. IF
YOU GO ABOVE THE LOAD VALUES, THERE CAN BE A SUDDEN MOVEMENT
OF THE PYLON OR ENGINE WHEN YOU RELEASE THE LOADS. THE SUDDEN
MOVEMENT CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PYLON OR ENGINE.
(34) Apply a compressive force to the forward and aft engine mounts as follows:
(a) Make sure that you continuously monitor all three digital load meters when you operate the
hoists.
1) Operation of one hoist can affect the loads at the other two hoist locations.
(b) If the engine inlet cowl is installed on the engine, do not exceed these loads:
(c) If the engine inlet cowl is not installed on the engine, do not exceed these loads:
(35) Remove the engine mount bolts as follows (Figure 15, Engine Installation - Aft Mount,
Figure 16, Engine Installation - Forward Mount):
(a) Alternately attach the two aft sockets [12], two aft torque multipliers [7] and two aft multiplier
handle assemblies [8] to the aft outboard arm assembly [11] with the outboard clamp [14]
and inboard clamp [4] with the hand knob [3] as required to loosen and remove the aft
engine mount bolts.
(b) Loosen each of the forward engine mount bolts by 1/2 turn.
(c) Loosen each of the aft engine mount bolts by 1/2 turn.
(d) Continue to loosen all of the bolts by 1/2 turn at a time until there is small clearance below
the head of each of the bolts.
(e) Make sure that there is no clearance between the top and bottom mating surfaces of the
forward and aft engine mounts.
1) If there is clearance between the mating surfaces of the mounts, use the hoists to adjust
the pre-loads to remove the clearance.
CAUTION: MONITOR THE LOADS ON THE HOISTS AT ALL TIMES. ADJUST THE HOISTS
WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO KEEP THE LOADS BALANCED BETWEEN
THE HOISTS. THE LOAD ON A HOIST CAN INCREASE QUICKLY WHEN
THE LOADS ARE OUT OF BALANCE. MAKE SURE THAT THE LOAD ON A
HOIST DOES NOT INCREASE TO MORE THAN THE LOAD LIMITS. LOADS
THAT ARE MORE THAN THE LOAD LIMITS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE
BOOTSTRAP TOOL, THE PYLON, AND THE ENGINE.
(a) When you lower the engine with the bootstrap tool, make sure that you adjust the hoists to
keep the loads balanced between the hoists.
1) The load on the inboard forward hoist will rise quickly if the inboard forward hoist and aft
hoist are operated without adjustment of the outboard forward hoist.
1) Operate all the hoists slowly and at the same time and lower the engine evenly.
a) The shear pins on the engine mounts will bind if you do not lower the engine evenly.
2) If you operate the hoists with air motors, make sure that you monitor the rate at which the
forward and aft hoists lift and lower the engine.
a) The air motors will lift and lower the aft hoist faster than the inboard forward hoist and
the outboard forward hoist.
b) To keep the engine in a level position, you must operate the aft hoist for
approximately half the amount of time that you operate the forward hoists.
(a) Install the left and right aft transportation stand interface brackets on the transportation
stand [134].
1) Make sure that you install the adjustable bracket on the right side (aft looking forward) of
the engine stand.
(b) Adjust the right side aft transportation stand interface bracket until it is fully retracted.
(c) Lower the engine evenly with the hoists until there is approximately 4 inches between the
engine and transportation stand [134] interfaces.
1) Continuously monitor the clearance between the engine and transportation stand while
you lower the engine.
2) Adjust the position of the transportation stand if it is necessary to align the interfaces and
to prevent contact between the stand and engine when you lower the engine.
(d) If necessary, make adjustments to the position of the transportation stand [134] to let the
engine attach to the stand correctly.
1) If you use the forward support brackets, P/N 11C3039P02, do these steps (Engine and
Shipping Stand - Install Support Equipment, AMM B787-A-G71-00-04-08A-722A-A):
a) Make sure that the transportation stand [134] is in the proper configuration to attach
the forward support brackets.
b) If necessary, adjust the position of the transportation stand [134] and the height of the
engine so that the transportation stand [134] to engine interfaces are aligned.
c) Install the two pins that attach the transportation stand [134] to the forward support
brackets, P/N 11C3039P02.
2) If you use the two forward transportation stand interface brackets, do these steps
(Figure 13, Forward Transportation Stand Interface Brackets):
a) If necessary, adjust the position of the transportation stand [134] and the height of the
engine so that the transportation stand [134] to engine interfaces are aligned.
b) Make sure that the two forward transportation stand interface brackets rotate into the
correct position onto the transportation stand [134] while you lower the engine.
c) Install the four pins that attach the two forward transportation stand interface brackets
to the transportation stand [134].
3) Lower the engine until the aft transportation stand interface brackets are correctly aligned
and engaged into the bosses on the left and right sides of the turbine rear frame.
4) Adjust the right side aft transportation stand interface bracket until it is fully engaged into
the boss on the right side of the turbine rear frame.
(g) When the engine is correctly attached to the transportation stand [134], continue to operate
the hoists until the chains are loose.
(38) Apply masking tape, G50314, or equivalent, on the ground to record the position of the
transportation stand [134] wheels.
(a) You will use this tape to help you align the transportation stand into the correct position
beneath the wing when you install the engine.
(39) Disconnect the two forward 6-ton hoists [35] and the aft 3-ton hoist [9] from the engine.
NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the engine mounts and thrust links from the engine
to do these inspections.
