Mental Maths: Squaring — Numbers from 40 to 50

Find the value of 442.

STRATEGY
Step 1: To find the last two digits of the answer,
50 – 44 = 6 [subtract the number from 50 to get the difference]
6 × 6 = 36 [multiply the difference by itself]

Step 2: To find the first two digits of the answer,

25 – 6 = 19 [subtract the difference from 25]

442 = 1936

Do these sums mentally.

1. 492 = 6. 432 =

2. 462 = 7. 422 =

3. 482 = 8. 502 =

4. 452 = 9. 472 =

5. 412 = 10. 442 =
