3
Why heat pumps
A heat pump is a smart, energy efficient alternative for electric water heater.
Installation is quick and easy. A heat pump works day and night as it extracts heat
from the surrounding air and doesn’t rely on direct sunlight to operate.
The ATMOS Air Heat Pump provides reliable recovery and utilises a coil around tank
technology, providing larger contact area for heat transfer resulting in fast heating.
It has frost protection and includes a back-up element as standard, delivering 60ºC
hot water, even on the coldest winter nights. Can be set to 75ºC in electric mode.

4
How it works….
Simple principle of operation:

It works like a reverse cycle air-

conditioner using the ambient heat in the
surrounding air as the heat source

5
How it works…
Stage 1

• The efficient heat pump technology

extracts energy from the surrounding air.

• Ambient warmth is used to convert the

refrigerant within the sealed system into a
gas.

• The gas is then compressed to generate

even more heat which then heats the water
in the tank.

• This process can work day or night, in

sunshine and rain, all year round.
6
Stage 2
• When hot water is drawn off and cold water enters the tank
• The thermostat activates the fan, compressor and circulator.
• The fan draws outside air across the evaporator picking up the
environment.
• The refrigerant enters the evaporator as a liquid. As the
refrigerant absorbs heat from the atmosphere it changes state,
at low pressure, from a sub cooled liquid to a super-heated
vapour or gas (evaporates).
• The vapour then enters the compressor and obtains more heat,
known as heat of compression, and passes into the heat
exchanger as a super-heated vapour at high pressure.

7
Stage 3 & 4
• As the refrigerant passes through the heat exchanger it
gives off heat which is absorbed by the water flowing
through a separate chamber inside the heat exchanger.

• As the refrigerant gives off heat it cools and changes state

back into a liquid (condenses).

• The refrigerant then enters the evaporator again and the

cycle is repeated.

• The resulting cold air is then discharged through the air

outlet louvers back to atmosphere and the heated water is
circulated back into the top of the storage tank.

• This process continues while ever heating is required until

the water in the storage tank reaches a temperature of
60°C.

15
How efficient is it…
COP (Coefficient of performance) is an expression of the
efficiency of a heat pump.

The COP of a heat pump, is a ratio of

useful heating provided to work required.
Higher COPs equate to lower operating costs

For example:
An electric resistance heater using one kilowatt-hour of
electric energy can transfer only 1 kWh of energy to heat at
100% efficiency.
1 kWh of energy used in an electric heat pump could deliver
approximately 4 kWh of energy from the outside
environment into the water in your tank.
The ratio of the energy transferred to the electric energy
used in the process is called its coefficient of performance
