WHAT IS NUTRIENT?

Nutrients are chemical


compounds in food that are used
by our body to function properly
and maintain health. We can get
differents nutrients in differents
foods.

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrate is very essential nutrients for our body.

Sources: Rice, Macaroni, pasta, sweets, potatoes,


breads, and some fruits and vegetables have lots of
carbohydrates.

Functions:
● Carbs are broken down by the digestive system to
make a sugar called glucose.
● Glucose is a fuel that our cells use for respiration
to release energy
● They are short-term energy stores(They are mainly
stored in the liver and muscles)

Lack of carbohydrates causes headaches, weakness


and etc.
Proteins
Our body needs protein to stay healthy and fit.

Sources: meat, milk, fish, egg, nuts, pulses etc.

Functions:
● It helps to build and grow our
muscles,hair,skin and bone.
● It helps in making new cells.
● It helps us to grow taller and stronger
● It balances fluid in our body.
Fats
Fat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Sources: oil, butter, ghee, cheese, chocolates

Function:
● They give us body energy to store for
later use.
● They help to protect our body organs.
● They keep our body warm

Too much eating of fat is unhealthy for us, causing


heart diseases.
Vitamins and minerals
Water
Water is the most important nutrient for our
body. Without water we can’t live.

Functions:
● 60% of a person’s body weight is made up
of water
● Water in cells allows all the different
chemicals inside them to dissolve, so that
they can react together.
● Water in blood allows it to flow easily.
Transporting substances all over the body.
