S1 Mid-term Exam Revision Worksheet (2)

Comprehension
Read the following story about Mr Kinjo, a visitor to Hong Kong.
Last July Kinjo Yuji came to Hong Kong on business. He was a shy nineteen-year-old Japanese
businessman. On his third day in Hong Kong, he went to Stanley to do some shopping. It was a beautiful
hot day. Mr Kinjo bought some clothes and started to walk back to the bus station.

Suddenly, three men stopped him. Then they robbed his bag and took all his money. Mr Kinjo felt
scared and lonely. He did not know what to do. He wanted to go back to his hotel in Jordan but he had no
money. And he did not speak English or Cantonese. He looked for some other Japanese visitors but did not
find any. After that, he decided to walk back to Central and take the Star Ferry to Kowloon.

It took Mr Kinjo seven days to walk over the top of Hong Kong Island and back to Central. It was a
terrible journey. It was very hot. Mr Kinjo had no food or drink and he kept getting lost.

“All the time I thought about how hungry and thirsty I was,” he said. “When I saw a department store, I
went into the washroom and drank water from the taps. I didn't eat anything.”

Mr Kinjo met many people on the way but nobody helped him. Once, he tried to speak to two
policemen but they did not understand him. Finally, they just walked away. Mr Kinjo felt disappointed and
angry because he could not explain himself.

When he reached Central, Mr Kinjo still had a big problem. He needed $1.7 for the Star Ferry. He
did not want to beg for money because he was shy. Suddenly, he saw a 50-cent coin on the ground. He
started looking for more coins. Luckily, there were lots of coins! Soon he had enough money. He took the
ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui. Finally, he walked two kilometers back to his hotel in Jordan. He was very tired but
very relieved.

Mr Kinjo is more relaxed now. 'My adventure seems funny now but I was very worried at the time.
I will never forget what happened to me. And I will never tell my family. I'm so embarrassed about it° Mr
Kinjo has learned one interesting thing about people in Hong Kong, “"You drop a lot of money on the
ground!”
