CLASSICAL ART

The Art During Classical Period


(1750-1820)
Classical is a term used to characterize the art, literature, and
aesthetics created by the ancient Greeks and Romans.
In Visual arts, a sense of control in handling of themes and a sense
of order and proportion of forms are observed.

Major Architectural Styles during Classical Period

Doric style – came first and from the main island of Greece
Ionic style – second to Doric and is from the island of Ionia
Corinthian style – was a popular style and was later on used for exterior
columns

DORIC COLUMNS
- considered as the simplest of all Greek
architectural designs

– considered as a very

- Columns are not as bigger as the Doric columns,
- has the Doric order in style
but they are taller.
- shows solid and powerful columns
- has round shapes that look like scrolls on top of
each column

2. Micon – a Greek painter and sculptor, a


contemporary and pupil of Polygnotus.

3. Apelles – most celebrated painter


- His portraits include one of the Alexander
the Great and mythological scenes, such as the
goddess Aphrodite rising from the sea.

His picture of Alexander holding a thunderbolt ranked


among his outstanding works.

Major Architectural Styles during Classical period. Draw your own building inside the box
