Example: Design day cooling load calculations

For the commercial building located in St. Louis, Missouri and described below. Determine
the sensible and latent cooling load at 4:00pm on July 21 for an inside design temperature
of 75 ºF and 55% RH.

West: Insulating double glass, ¼ inch air space, no shades; A=240ft2

U = 0.55 (Table 5-8a) wood frame

People: 35 at moderate office activity, 8:00am – 16:00pm = 8 hours

Lights: 5600W, fluorescent, 8:00am – 18:00pm = 10 hours ON

Infiltration: ½ air changes per hour

Solution:
For St. Louis, outdoor deign: 94 ºF db / 75 ºF wb, 21 ºF DR; ∴ 𝑡𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 = 83.5℉
Inside design: 75 ºF and 55% RH
[𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶]𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐 = 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 + (78 − 75) + (83.5 − 85) = 𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 + 1.5℉
