Induction Plans for Beginning Teachers

Topic Title

“The Beginning: The Rising Thunder,” will be the name of the new staff Orientation. Our

objective of the new staff orientation is to let the staff know about the school. To go over the

school’s rules, policies, and procedures. The orientation will also introduce the new staff to the

administration team.

Facilitator’s

The principal will be the facilitator of the orientation, the assistant principals, the rest of the

administration team will help the principal with the orientation where each person will have a

section that they will be presenting.

Description

In this session the principal will be introducing the leadership team to the new staff and the

roles that they have at the school. After the introduction of the leadership team, we will be

discussing some of the policies and procedures of the school and the school district. The next

thing that will take place will be discussing the handbook and the signing of the handbook

stating that they all understand all policies and procedures and will adhere to them. The next

thing that we will do is have an Icebreaker to lighten the mood of the new staff members. After

the Icebreaker is finished, we would then take a small break for about 15 minutes just to give

everyone some time to go to the restroom and get a snack if that’s what they wanted to do.

After the break we will go through a few more presentations that the other admin team on the

mentoring program that they will be implementing at the school for new employees. After

discussing this we will dismiss for the day, upon dismissing we will give the new teachers will

Rationale

The orientation was planned to welcome the new staff at the school. Going over the

school’s policies and procedures and handbook to make sure that the staff knows the rules and

what the expectations are for the staff. The Icebreakers were implemented for the staff to get

to know each other and build some type of camaraderie. Making sure that the new staff feels

welcome and has some of the things that they have starting their new job is one thing that can

get them going on the right foot, which is the responsibility of the principal and the

administration team. Making sure that your staff is prepared for what every task that comes

their way is a great sign of a leader and should not be taken for granted.

Part 2: New Teacher Mentoring Plan

Purpose

The mentorship program that will be implemented at the school is designed for new

teachers that are in their first three years of teaching at the school. The program will be over

the course of three years and the admin team will be assigned a mentor that will assist with

helping them with any problems or concerns that they may be having. The purpose of this

program is to show new teachers the standard we want to set in the classrooms by

implementing strategic teaching strategies, helping teachers understand the level of stress that

comes in the profession, and creating a positive interaction with other teachers and staff that

can lead to retention of staff. This program was started to ensure the success of all new

teachers to the profession and continue to keep the teachers in the profession as long as

possible. Studies show that new educators leave the profession before they complete their 3 rd

year of teaching.

Criteria

The criteria to be chosen as mentor teachers will be the criteria that have been chosen

by the administration and the instructional coaches at the school. The mentors chosen will

show that they are capable of the mentoring role and show that they have the strategies and

wherewithal to successfully mold a new teacher into the type of teacher that they want to be.

Mentors must be able to provide effective feedback to the mentee and show a level of

compassion knowing that they are in the beginning stages of their educational journey.

Timeline

The program will take place throughout the school year, mentors and mentees will meet

twice a month, The first meeting that will take place will be about you two getting to know one

another which will help the mentoring process. Each meeting will have a different area that

they will be focused on. The first thing that will be focused on by the mentor will be making

lesson plans. Lesson plans are the most important thing in the classroom because it will allow

the principal at the school, and you know where you are in a lesson, the focal points of a lesson

and making sure that you are staying on track with teaching state standards. Classroom

management would be next on our list, often new teachers struggle with classroom

management of students, time, and behavior. After this is established the next thing, they will

be targeting is data, this covers the collection of data, how to read data, and how to improve

the data you’re receiving.

Induction Activities

The activities that have been planned between the mentor and mentee will be activities

that show collaboration, teamwork, and transparency. The activities will show that the teaching

process is just a process that will take time to learn, as education grows so will the wealth of

knowledge that will be taught to you. The activities that the mentor and mentee will be doing is

working on the classroom behavior matrix, lesson planning, going over the SIS operating

system. The behavior matrix is a chart that will be on full display to your students every day

that will show the students the type of behaviors that you want them to display when they are

in your classroom, the behavior matrix can also display the consequences as well for the

students when the display the wrong behavior. The lesson plans will be the next thing on the

list, the lesson plans that the mentor and mentee make should go hand in hand with the state

standard, depending on the school the lesson plans should mirror the lesson plans of another

teacher in the same grade, activities can be different, but teachers should be on the same page.

each other. The next activity would be learning to operate the SIS system. The SIS system is an

additional helping hand when it comes to your students. This operating system will tell you all

the information that you would need to know as it refers to your students whether they have

an IEP/504, their allergies, who has custody, whether they have had an FBA or a BIP, their

address and their grades dating back to elementary school.

Professional Development Topics

Mentors must inform the mentees of professional development that could help and

which are teacher planning days, there are also some professional developments that are

offered by the school district that are there to help add to your skill sets. Topics that should be

on the mentees list include anything that has to do with lesson planning, classroom

management, differentiated instruction, time management and collaboration.

Budgetary Implications

As the budget goes the mentor should be compensated for the time that they use when

working with the mentee. The amount of compensation will be discussed with the mentor and

the principal before they accept the position of a mentor. The only other compensation that

could be used is compensatory time if that is what the mentor wants.

Servant Leadership

The program was made to show that a principal can delegate power to other members

of his staff which take trust. As a principal I know everything that takes place at the school. The

program will show the strength of the principal and the admin team. One who truly serves

others leads with a heart of compassion and has the humility to ask for help. A great leader

consults the counsel of his/her advisor before he plans.
