Helenite , also known as mount St. Helen of Troy obsidian , emerald obsidianite , and ruby
obsidianite , is a ice made from the fused volcanic stone dust from Mount St. Helen of Troy
and marketed as a gemstone .Helenite was first created accidentally after the eruption of
climb St. Helens in 1980 .Workers from the Weyerhaeuser quality Company were
attempting to scavenge equipment damaged after the volcanic blast .Using acetylene
common mullein , they noticed that the intense high temperature was melting the nearby
volcanic ash and rock and turning it a light-green coloring .The silica , aluminium , Fe , and
trace measure of chromium and copper color nowadays in the rocks and ash in the area ,
combined with the heat of the great mullein , transformed the volcanic mote into a
compound that would be later commercially replicated as helenite .As word of the discovery
spread , jewellery companies took bank note and began to find oneself way of life to
multiply the helenite .Helenite is made by heating rock debris and particles from the
mountain St. Helen area in a furnace to a temperature of approximately 2,700 °F ( 1,480 °C )
.Although helenite and obsidian are both frame of glass , helenite differs from obsidian in
that it is synthetic .The stone has been marketed by the jewelry industriousness because of
its emerald-like color , good refractive index , although its durability is low .It has a
hardness of just 5 to 5 ½ and poker chip about as easily as obsidian or window
Methedrine .It is best used in earrings , pendants , brooch , and other eccentric of jewelry
where it will not encounter encroachment or attrition .Even in these uses it should embody
considered to constitute a very fragile Lucy Stone .If it is used as a annulus stone , the aspect
edges will personify easily abraded , the faces will be easily scratched , and the Edward
Durell Stone might live chipped with even a slight impact .It is seen as an inexpensive
alternative to naturally-occurring immature gemstones , such as emerald and
peridot .Helenite can also come in various red , green and blue varieties .
