While some people like working with a single software like
Photoshop, I prefer Creative Cloud because it offers you access to many
applications including the web application Adobe Color, which you will
see in Chapter 2. This is a useful application that takes the guesswork
out of color theory and helps you create color themes for your
infographics online. Refer to Figure 2.

System Requirements
If you are unsure if your computer meets the following requirements
for running the latest version of Adobe Illustrator (version 28.0) on
your Windows or macOS desktop computers, then please consult the

With the Creative Cloud Desktop console visible, the installation
steps are similar for all Adobe applications on your computer. I will, in
the next section, “Install and Open Application Steps,” give a brief
overview of how to load and open your Illustrator application; however,
not until Chapters 3 and 4 will we actually use the Photoshop and
Illustrator applications. As mentioned, we will look briefly at Photoshop
in Chapter 3 for the purpose of scanning and opening a scanned file.
Photoshop will be mentioned briefly in Volume 2, and we’ll look at
Photoshop again in Volume 3, as well as InDesign.
In this book, by the time we get to Chapter 3, if you are planning on
digitizing an infographic that you drew by hand, you may want to
download Photoshop as well at the same time, and this will cause
Camera Raw and possibly Bridge to download as well. That’s OK.
Though not required for this book, Camera Raw is a useful tool for color
correction of photos, and Bridge is great for keeping your images and
photos organized. I will mention Bridge again in Volume 3 as well, and
then I will also discuss how InDesign is a great layout application that
can be used for incorporating graphics to create your final publication.
Refer to Figures 3 and 4.
Note Though not required for this book, for myself and my
personal workflow, I also install Acrobat Pro as this application can
assist you in your graphics workflow for PDF file creation after
completing your work in InDesign. In addition, if you are doing a lot
of video work, then you may also want to later install Premiere Pro,
After Effects, and Audition for video and audio work. Though none of
these are required for the book, they will be mentioned again in
Volume 3. Refer to Figure 6.

Install and Open Application Steps
If you have not already installed Photoshop or Illustrator on your
computer, then do so now from the Creative Cloud console. Refer to
Apps ➤ All Apps ➤ Desktop Tabs. Look for the area called “Available in
your Plan.” Click the Install button beside each application one at a
time. Refer to Figure 7.

The installation may take several minutes. You will then receive a
notification once the installation is complete, and then from time to
time, the Creative Cloud will send automatic updates to you as well as
bug fixes. Some installations may require a computer restart. In the
installed area, Photoshop and Illustrator will appear “up to date.” Then,
to open, for example, Illustrator, just click the Open button on the same
line. Refer to Figure 8.
These are the same steps you can use with the Photoshop
application, and then to close, use File ➤ Exit.

I will be referring to these help links throughout the book and
subsequent volumes if you need additional information on a specific
tool or panel. However, the focus of the book will be mostly on
Illustrator, and it is assumed that you have some experience already
with Photoshop.
You can also find the tutorials using the Creative Cloud Desktop
console when you hover over them in the installed area and click the
icon. Refer to Figure 10.

Or you can access similar areas in the Illustrator Help drop-down
menu or the Discover panel that can be accessed via a magnifying glass
icon in the upper menu area when a file is open. The same settings are
available in Photoshop as well, which are helpful for speeding up your
workflow. Refer to Figure 11.

Ancient History–Pre-1600 AD
One of the earliest forms of drawings that you are probably aware of is
the cave paintings of Lascaux near Montignac, France. Some
anthropologists believe them to be around 17,000 years old (15,000
BC). While this is considered an example of Paleolithic art, some
anthropologists and art historians wonder, “Could this be a
representation of a past hunting expedition or some type of mystical
ritual?” For today’s modern viewers, we cannot be sure as there is no
text or familiar icons that come with the drawing, so we are left unsure
as to the artists’ true intentions. At the very least, it does give us a clue
as to what animals existed in the ancient landscape. Refer to Figure 1-2.

Over the millennia, text has diverged out of the pictorial image. Yet
pictures and text continued to be placed together to give clearer
instructions. Instruction was something that became very important to
ancient cultures such as the Egyptians. One example we can consider,
besides the myriads of hieroglyphics painted or carved on pharaohs’
tombs, would be the ancient Book of the Dead, possibly compiled
around 1500 BC. Though the origins of the original writing of
hieroglyphs are much older, about 3150 BC, the actual concepts of the
ritual came about in 2345 BC, as its text and images appeared in the
tombs of the kings. In 1500 BC, the Book of the Dead consisted of
papyrus scrolls of priests’ instructions appearing with pictures and
hieroglyphics explaining various funerary spells that they felt could
help the deceased person through the underworld into the afterlife
successfully. This text continued to be used up until about 200 AD. Refer
to Figure 1-3.

Other cultures and religions, such as Christian, Mayan, Tibetan,
Buddhist, Hindu, and others throughout the world, if they had separate
languages in written text and illustrations, often tried to compile sets of
instructions on the topic of ritual, religion, or a way to live. These are
the origins or roots of the first infographics.
However, over time graphic instructions changed into other ways to
visually quantify knowledge; this included such topics as health,
weather, agriculture, life cycle, and territory.
When we think of a group marking out a territory, we should
consider maps. One of the earliest maps was created in Egypt in 1150
BC, known as the Turin Papyrus Map. One of the earliest world maps
was created in 600 BC in Babylon on a clay tablet and is considered a
flat earth diagram. Refer to Figure 1-4.

Many other nations and cultures, in order to keep a record of their
territories, continued to create maps that included typographical
drawings and text explaining the regions depicted. Refer to Figure 1-5.
