Performance Task
Activity: Drawing the Solar System Based on Kepler’s Law of Motion
Objective:
The shape of some oval school tracks are ellipses. The shape of the orbit of each planet in our solar
system is also an ellipse. Unlike a circle, which is a curved shape drawn around a single point, an ellipse is a
curved shape that is drawn around two points Each of the points is called a focus; together they are called
the foci of the ellipse. An ellipse is described as eccentric because it is not circular. The more unlike a circle
an ellipse becomes, the more eccentric it is.
Materials:
Illustration Board, Push pins, String/yarn, Pencil, Marker, Ruler and Crayons.
Procedure:
1. The formula for eccentricity is distance between foci divided by the length of the Major axis. What is the
definition of eccentricity? _______________________________________________________

2. Compare the Eccentricity value of Ellipse 5 and Ellipse 1, which is greater? what is their difference
value?(show your solution)
3. In your personal experience, what is the most challenging part of the activity?
