Pattern

- Things that are repetitive, which can be found

in nature as color, shape, action or some
other sequences.

Types of Pattern in Nature

1. Symmetry
- Parts are mirror images of each other
a) Reflection Symmetry – divides into two
pieces which are mirror images of each
other. Often termed as Bilateral symmetry
b) Rotational Symmetry – called radial
symmetry. Pattern looks the same after a
certain amount of rotation.
Starfish,flower
c) Translational symmetry – do not change
its size and shape even if it moved to
another location. Bricks, honeycomb
2. Fractals – never ending patterns that are self-
similar across different scale. Fern
3. Spots and stripes – exhibited in the external
appearances of animals.
4. Flower petals –
5. Number patterns and sequences

 Fibonacci

often occur in nature. This number
sequence was developed in the Middle
Ages, named after Leonardo Pisano
