PATTERNS AND NUMBERS IN NATURE

What is pattern? Pattern is regular, repeated, recurring.

Patterns in nature – visible regularities, forms found in nature

Example: Animals (Zebras, tigers, cats, snakes) covered with pattern of stripes

Natural patterns – Waves, formation of typhoon

Types of patterns –

Symmetry – from greek word meaning “to measure together” and widely used in the study of
geometry. A sense of harmonious and beautiful proportion. Symmetry is defined as a proportionate
and balanced similarity that is found in two halves of an object.

 Bilateral Symmetry – a symmetry in which the left and the right sides of the organisms can
be divided into a mirror image of each other along the midline. A form of symmetry in which
the opposite sides are similar.

Example: Animals, plants, and flowers

Fractals – a never ending pattern. a type of mathematical shape that are infinitely complex. a pattern
that repeats forever.

Example: Tree (grows a repeated branching), lightning volt, veins in the body

Spiral – a curve patterns that focuses on a center point and a series of circular shapes that revolve
around it.

Example – pinecone, hurricane

Tessellations – form by repeated cubes or tiles with no overlaps and no gaps.

Example: Honeycomb, Pineapple

THE FIBONACCI NUMBERS

Fibonacci Numbers/Sequence – Adding two consecutive preceding numbers.

Mathematics is a sign of patterns, and we study mathematics to think logically, critically and
creatively.

Fibonacci Numbers/Sequence was first describe by a mathematicians of India 1300 years ago and
was first introduce in the West by Leonardo Pisano or Leonardo of Pisa in 1202 which is also known
as Fibonacci. “Son of Fibonacci”

1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233,377

Add two consecutive preceding numbers and not just any number/s from the sequence.

Fibonacci numbers appears in nature example, flower petals, shells, patterns in pinecone, pinapple
